United cancelled my 9am flight today at 1am last night (I was asleep) and sent me a text saying they rebooked me on the 7am.

Cuts are usually planned with that in mind.
Hiring freezes + attrition (3-5% annually) are essentially pseudo-layoffs without the overhead.
By directly cutting in a layoff + freeze these firms are cutting around double what the headline says.
