I've found that the (correct)(and also handsome) belief that "Under no circumstances can machines be alive or have souls" makes a good swath of sci-fi basically unreadable
I laugh every time I see it. It's just a machine, who cares that it is doing a pointless futile task that only prolongs its suffering, there is no suffering, it feels nothing.
