And so I come to my last day of 44 years of uniformed service to my country. With a heavy heart I will not be returning to the Coast Guard but staying on in Somalia. After a decade as Director probably enough.
Last year the Police Bomb Disposal Team had no sniffer dogs. So they found the cleverest stray pups in Mogadishu and trained them themselves. Went to see them in action today with the deputy Commissioner and DG of the Ministry.
Proud to have handed over a refurbished dormitory to the Police Commissioner so that the police can train an extra 140 officers per training cycle. That's 560 more police officers each year. project manager a fellow Irishman Hugh Moody.
Never mind the legal complexities I am blue in the face advising the department, as the man who ran the last 3 SAR Heli procurements, that they do not have the time left between now and June 2025 to safely, and I stress safely, transition to new machines.
After 6 years in Somalia I presented my last 6 monthly report to the EU Member States this week. No idea what I will be doing next year but hopefully something useful?
So great Christmas present for my son Peter Reynolds. Image from his camera on the outside of the separation of third stage launch vehicle with the James Webb telescope - camera built and designed in Dublin. Extra joy for the Reynolds household today
Great to be invited to Parliament to listen to the development of Irelands defence capabilities and later discuss all things security with Deputy Cathal Berry and Senator Craughwell in more casual surroundings
Celebrating diligent work and good cooperation for more secure Somalia. On 9/7 in Mogadishu, EU Ambassador Nicolas Berlanga Martinez awarded Common Security and Defence Policy Support Medal to EUCAP Somalia Head of Mission Chris Reynolds & EUTM-S Force Commander Antonello de Sio.
Very weird to see my photo with Lara and Robert Fisk all these years later on her front cover of her new book. Grapes of Wrath War briefing as Convoy Commander heading out into the war zone.
Honour to be present today with the President of Somalia at the TurkSom Passing out parade of Somali Officers and NCO's. Only member of the International Community on the podium.
St Patricks Day in the Obama White House 2015. Who would have thought that Trump would be the next host? Met Obama and Biden but never Trump and never would want to.
My interview in Todays Sunday Independents. Coast Guard needs to be independent of the Department of Transport who made bad decisions around IRCG safety, NVG, quality control & SAR legislation that I could not overturn even when taken to the top of DoT.
Enjoyed laying down my military oral history for the Defence Forces archives yesterday. A day of remembering the good and bad elements of service and beyond.
So I leave Mogadishu for the very last time after 6 wonderful years but I leave behind a tree planted in the compound with my name on it. Wonderful gesture from a wonderful team at EUCAP. They promised to send me a yearly photo as it grows.
This is a great story. When the EOD team lost their sniffer dogs they went and found the cleverest street dogs in Mogadishu and trained them themselves. First Class Somali Police Force!

Today is my 5th Anniversary of arriving in to EUCAP Somalia. Incredible journey with incredible people including my very tolerant family. Here's to another year.
As someone who has led the last 3 contract transactions, I offered my advice FOC but the department did not take it up. The timeline is not doable.
Uncertainty over future of Coast Guard jobs as helicopter crews transition to new operator
@LeeRoyIreland
A disgrace and whoever was involved in this procurement process should be held accountable. I can assure you it would not have happened on my watch to treat our aircrew like this and was one of the reasons I put them in Coast Guard uniforms. They are our team and not for sale.
@paulmurphy_TD
Paul. You obviously don't know how the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy works within the overall Common Foreign Policy umbrella. I lead a CSDP Mission training police how to fight terrorists up until recently so DM me and I can teach you the basics of this if you are keen?
It is a very sad time in Mission mourning the death of our colleague and friend from COVID, which he contracted working for security reform in Somalia. Our greatest tribute is to carry on with his work. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
It is with great sadness that we share notice of the passing of a Finnish Mission Member, who passed away on 21/03/21 after contracting COVID-19. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends & colleagues & to the Finnish Government for his loss:
Congratulations to

Force long into the future.
10 years ago this week in the US as part of the group accepting the first new S92 into the IRCG contracted fleet. New RF tender just published very very similar to our ground breaking one a decade ago but with much needed fixed wing 24/7 service.
Lovely afternoon with
@Crickie2
, Stephen & Louise in TCD for Stephen's PhD conferal (only 2 years later due to CoVid!) and staying up for the night, going 'out out' to catch up and celebrate. So proud of my hubby & our three amazing sons! 👏❣👏❣👏❣👏❣
Great to see our helis doing 3 long range missions during the week but 2 questions hopefully somebody can answer. 1. Did we use our Advanced Paramedics to admin the right drugs for long range care? 2. Why did we use the UK fixed wing assets and not Irish??
Footage from yesterday's long-range medical evacuation by Rescue 115 approximately 160nm off the south west coast with support from the UK Coastguard RESCUE99 aircraft. This is the second long-range medical evacuation coordinated by the Irish Coast Guard in recent days.
Ireland heads towards level 5. In Somalia where heard immunity was the only possibility no reported COVID death in two months. Lack of testing sure but its more than just that. Interesting study some day.
I will be on the
@TodaywithClaire
show today at 1015 talking about the so-called floating Russian superbomb the MV Ruby broken down in the Channel under tow and looking for a place of refuge. 7 times more NH4NO3 that the Beirut port explosion.
@roy_kinsella
Passex is not an interop ex. Its two ships passing each other and maybe some formation maneuvering. The INS has no missile protective systems, no ASW capability, no convoy protection capability, etc. It is a constabulary coast guard in all but name and legislative powers. Sorry!
These officers from Somalia🇸🇴 & the Maldives🇲🇻 are spending the week at our General Secretariat in Lyon. Thanks to Project GEMINI, they’ll be trained on our global databases and will leave better equipped to identify & stop the cross-border movement of foreign terrorist fighters.
Terrible accident last night. Looks like generator failures x 2 meant the ship lost steerage; Thick smoke is the Captain going full astern. Doesn't seem to have let go an emergency anchor and hit the pillar at significant speed. Large loss of life reported.
After dropping wifey off to her flight to Lisbon was able to get on the first Tee Box for 0600 and followed with a full Irish for Fathers Day. Great start to any Sunday.
Our Head of Mission,

Just read Mountain Rescue Irelands submission to the next aviation contract and it is pretty much the same as last time and many errors in its logic. They want the 2 east Coast Bases dedicated to mountain rescue with small helis......
Working lunch with Minister Simon Coveney on security situation in Somalia as IRL has a rotating seat on UNSC with responsibility for the Somalia file. I discussed our role with the Darwish, regularising state militias and the role of improved interop of SNA, Darwish and police.
Puntland making great steps in suppressing piracy. This recent initiative and the passing out of the PMPF recruits points to sustained efforts.
@Plstatehouse
Great to see Mountain Rescue Ireland coming out public on this. The mis-information and outright nonsense I have pointed to has no place in defining Irelands SAR needs nor should vested interests. MRI and IRCG continue to work closely as partners for the good of those in peril.
So today is my last day working for the UN in Malaysia. Nothing else planned so if you have an interesting project that fits my profile you know where to find me.
So my sons optical kit he has been working on for a long time will get launched on Arianne 6 today. This completes his ambition of 3 - to get his kit on manned flight in the Space Station, stellar flight and inter-stellar existing solar system missions. Guess which one he is?

In the 80's the Royal Navy sent marines to Rockall via Helis to build a plinth claiming UK ownership. They brought everything except water thinking they would use sea water. When this was not possible they urinated to make the concrete. Taking the p*ss?

I am often asked how do you get a job in a Mission. First you must register your CV at …/…/11010/details.do. Then keep and eye out on the EEAS site for job openings called Call for Contributions.
Robert Fisk sent me a letter and photo when I got home. Like Robert the letter has faded with the sun but engrained memories remain of a terrible time and particularly the Qana massacre

When our PM visited a Naval vessel wearing a Coast Guard jacket I had presented him with....Priceless. have to say he was one of the best Ministers I severed under but Pascal Donoghue was my all time favourite as an excellent and inspirational leader.
Our latest recruitment drive for International Mission Members is now out. 41 positions are advertised. Remember you must use the online Goalkeeper system - national Goalkeepers for seconded and EU Goalkeeper for seconded/contracted.
Good to join the UK Ambassador, , Minister of Defence, Chief of Somali Defence Forces and the Chief of British military in Somalia at the end of a four week Planning and ops Room Course. EUCAP supported the Somali police elements of the joint planning phase.
Showing the Defence Minister and CDF our ground-breaking course for SNA officers who will set up the HQ of 8 Brigade in Baidoa. We will also provide long-term mentoring + help with HQ facilities. Effective planning and oversight of operations is vital to defeat Al Shabaab!
