Here for the classically liberal hot takes. Formerly on Capitol Hill, now I’m think tanking. Massachusetts native in Virginia. Previously in DC/NY/TX . ✡️🗽
If you flip out when Congress is directed to make laws instead of outsourcing their job to unaccountable administrative agencies, perhaps you should consider that you’re not actually pro-democracy.
I deem this genre of outrage “decorum inversion.” The President of the United States acts like a psycho constantly, nuking any expectation of normalcy. But the second someone else does something off color, especially as it relates to him, we must clutch our pearls in horror! 🙄
Disappointed to see
@SpeakerPelosi
rip up the speech that mentioned lives we’ve lost and heroes we celebrated at the SOTU. No matter how you feel or what you disagree with, remember others are watching. This was unbecoming of someone at her level in office.
I’ve known in my heart for days this was the case, but it’s now confirmed that my friend Jake, who was working security at the musical festival in Israel, has died. To the pro-genocide assholes who posted the paraglider graphic in celebration: rot in hell.
Trump-like libertarian? What does this even mean? Are there people who actually think Trump made the federal government smaller or sought to utilize less executive power?
@richardmarx
What is wrong with you? And all of the people in your mentions endorsing this? You realize there are ways to disagree with people without supporting violent attacks on them, right?
Just here to remind everyone: libertarians told you for years that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh aren’t the same and that the former is better than the latter. 💅🏻
The most useful thing about Donald Trump is that he coaxes many people into revealing their worst character traits in defense of him. I’ve learned a lot of terrible things about many folks I was once comfortable associating with. I’m a whole lot more cautious now.
I’m old enough to remember when conservatives lost their minds for several months when Obama said, “you didn’t build that” in relation to the economy. But lol nothing matters.
Cancel culture is blue collar workers at Smith being fired & harassed over false racism accusations, or a Mexican-American being fired due to fake “white supremacist hand gestures.” It’s not prominent people like Tanden losing a political appointment or Hawley losing a book deal.
@billybinion
Also, it’s a … crosswalk? Like? I actually honestly don’t get it. And yeah, the double standards end up radicalizing people, let’s not pretend that isn’t a thing.
The thing about QAnon is that it’s actually dumber than most conspiracy theories, which is saying something. Many are at least vaguely based on a grain of truth that veer into wild leaps of nonsensical logic. QAnon is literally dudes from 4chan trolling Trumpy Boomers.
Respectfully, this is absurd. SCOTUS wasn’t ruling on a policy—in this case student loan forgiveness. It rightfully placed limits on the unilateral power of the executive branch. Want this law? Pass it in Congress. That alleged defenders of democracy don’t get this is troubling.
Today, the Supreme Court sided with Republican elected officials, blocking relief to over 40 million working and middle-class Americans.
I believe the Court’s decision is wrong – I will not stop fighting to deliver relief to borrowers who need it the most.
The optics in this pic—& this is far from the only example—speak to one of the many reasons there’s so little trust in institutions & public health messaging. The✨important people✨sit around unmasked, but the “disease vector” aides cover their faces. It’s a visual caste system.
I met with members of New York's Congressional Delegation to discuss our ongoing efforts against COVID - including preparing for the Omicron variant.
We'll keep working to help New Yorkers recover from the pandemic, create good-paying jobs, & build our economy back better.
@charlie_savage
I’m too old to know, but logic would dictate that this is true. “Woke” has been thoroughly appropriated by crusty old politicians. How could it possibly be cool now? (Origins aside.)
@tedxlondon
@n1kk1m
This made up word is not inclusive, it’s nonsensical. And frankly, the entire premise is misogynistic. I’m tired of being expected to believe that erasing women is “progressive.”
I find it bizarre that people keep attributing this behavior exclusively to Republicans. Did all of the people I live around in the deep blue environs of DC suddenly become a bunch of right-wingers? 🤔
I often ask myself what it will take for Republicans, particularly elected officials, to stop placating this deranged man. But I’ve been asking for 6 years now, including when I worked on Capitol Hill as a Republican staffer. The answer is clearly nothing. There’s never a bottom.
Trump told a conservative radio host today that he'd issue full pardons and a government apology to the Capitol rioters who violently attacked law enforcement to stop the democratic transfer of power.
It’s fascinating that when Trump was president, the nationwide spread of a highly transmissible disease was his fault. But now that Biden is president, the nationwide spread of a highly transmissible disease is the fault of GOP governors. (No, this isn’t a defense of Trump.)
Meanwhile, over on Truth Social, Donald Trump is taking a victory lap over two insufficiently loyal-to-him Republican candidates losing their elections tonight.
I have some exciting news! I'm now the Director of Media Relations at the

This is idiotic. If Youngkin had run on a pro-Trump agenda he would’ve lost Virginia. Please tell me the Republican Party isn’t going to continue being this institutionally stupid. It’s even dumber than Democrats thinking they can just repeat “Trump” in lieu of a policy platform.
@GlennYoungkin
@WinsomeSears
@JasonMiyaresVA
Terry McAuliffe and Democrats tried to run against Trump in Virginia but their strategy backfired.
@GlennYoungkin
will receive more votes than any Virginia governor in history.
President Trump continues to be a huge boost for Republicans across the country.
It’s almost as though treating white women as a toxic monolith—the very demographic Democrats need to swing for victory next month—is a bad strategy. 🧐
Call me crazy, but perhaps we should make immigration legal, make it easy for migrants to work, and let them go where they’d like to. Sounds fundamentally American to me. It’s what was on offer to my Irish and Jewish ancestors.
Noticing supposedly enlightened people attacking Amy Coney Barrett for the number of kids she has, accompanied by inquiries about whether she’s a good mother. These questions are never asked of men, & if you find yourself doing it, check your misogyny, because that’s what it is.
Seattle introduced a mandatory $5 fee on delivery apps to cover their driver’s living wage and sales were almost cut in half. Now the drivers can’t make rent.
"Less than .001% of those fully vaccinated have experienced a fatal breakthrough case. Less than .004% of those fully vaccinated had to be hospitalized. In other words, the vaccines work. The vaccines remain the best way to protect yourselves from this virus. Period. Full stop."
It is bizarre to me that
@bariweiss
, whose politics appear liberal and entirely mainstream, is absolutely enraging to so many people. It’s hard to make sense of. But the reactions to her from the authoritarian wing of the left are over the top and honestly kind of terrifying.
Perhaps a political party aware of this fact would support laws that make it much easier for immigrants to move here. The labyrinth of bureaucracy and red tape in our immigration laws is anything but conservative. Just a thought!
Justin’s amendment to rein in spying via FISA’s section 702 was fought by Paul Ryan & Nancy Pelosi, then the reauthorization of said spying was signed into law by Trump. Justin also hasn’t been on TV since his impeachment comments. These people really need better talking points.
If Phony
@justinamash
were a TRUE libertarian, he wouldn’t stand for abuse of FBI power, spying, & bogus dossiers funded by political foes and fed to secret FISA courts. He is just another Grandstanding Swamp Creature auditioning for the approval of the liberal media.
So many of the replies to this are insane. There are people who want to harshly restrict young, healthy, vaccinated people indefinitely because there’s a *chance* they could spread Covid. Failing to accept that the virus is endemic is breaking people.
DeSantis sits at 24% in the latest WSJ poll.
This is a red alarm for his campaign team. He has high positives but a low base.
There’s no path.
Something unforeseen could change the trajectory here but that’s not a strategy. This is a bad place for a campaign to be.
Increasingly convinced that social media has actually destroyed society. And this isn’t even hyperbolic. It completely distorts people’s perception of reality.
@Jose_Galvan
I always found the idea that it was virtuous for an upper middle class healthy person to send a working class Instacart shopper to the store for them to be absurd. While that person shouldered their risk, they sat around writing mean tweets about anyone who left their homes.
Perhaps all of the Elizabeth Warren stans lamenting her loss should consider that a whole lot of voters aren't enthusiastic about one person "planning" every aspect of our lives from the White House. The fewer "plans" coming from that place the better, tbh.
@BriannaWu
@IsaiahLCarter
Growing up in the 90s, the perception was that the Christian right were the morality police. It’s clear now that so-called progressives fill that role. It’s a cannabalistic and almost religious movement that deems any deviation a sin and thrives on excommunication. It’s not a
PLEASE get vaccinated. Someone else I know, a person w/ a young family, just passed away from Covid. I know I’ve been rage tweeting about mask mandates & bad public health messaging lately, but it’s b/c I think it distracts from the only solution: vaccines in arms. Get yours now.
This tweet brought to you by reading the mentions of
@lizzywol
and
@NateSilver538
. A lot of people on here would benefit from mental health treatment. And I don't mean that derisively, I think many folks genuinely need to chart a path back to normality with professional guidance.
You know who isn’t a cosponsor of the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act? Democratic vice presidential candidate
@KamalaHarris
. Perhaps her staff can answer a question for me. Does Senator Harris support ending no-knock raids?
"Six months after the Vegas incident, Noem and Lewandowski made plans to book a hotel room together in Seattle while there for an event to raise money for Republican candidate Jesse Jensen, an informed source said"
Why do “school choice” advocates never advocate eliminating school district boundaries/funding schools by local property tax and allowing poor, Black students to attend white, wealthy schools in neighboring municipalities? They don’t really want choice, just privatization.
The thing about turning your political party into a cult that worships a deranged sociopath is that it’ll be hard to earn the votes of independents. But, hey. Good luck with that.
Marjorie Taylor Greene: The Republican Party supports Donald Trump. Any Republican that isn't willing to adapt, we're completely eradicating from the party
Give me a break. I’ve been to the West Bank, too—on a pro-settler tour, no less. And I left thinking the situation there was totally untenable, but guess what it didn’t make me do? Deny that Israeli women *inside of Israel’s internationally recognized borders* were raped and
An interesting thing about Jamaal Bowman is that he was actually pretty pro-Israel until he actually went there and saw that it's an apartheid state, and then he realized he had to speak out even if it cost him his career.
Rape victims who receive care at Saint Luke’s 16 health centers in Missouri will no longer have access to Plan B. The hospital system fears that emergency contraception will violate the state's abortion ban, which is both draconian and ambiguous.
Suddenly, Americans can’t spend like they used to. Store shelves are emptying, and it can take months to find a car, refrigerator or sofa.
If this continues, we may need to — gasp! — live more like the Europeans. That actually might not be a bad thing
Amy Coney Barrett is likable, graceful, intelligent, beautiful, and has a gorgeous family. It’s going to be tough for Democrats to convince average observers that a woman of her caliber is oppressed by a patriarchal system that would make us subservient to men. But best of luck?
@EWErickson
Ummmm. Just spitballing here, but maybe it’s because no matter how gross Trump gets people still enable him? You once opposed him and now apparently are fine endorsing all of this. Own how conservative coalescence around Trump makes this behavior normal.
Compare the fear mongering headline with this little nugget buried deep within an otherwise alarmist story. Absolute nonsense like this is why so much of the public has no ability to rationally assess risk.
@jgrantaddison
I think a lot of people, and men in particular, don’t understand how meaningful it can be for women to see a famous model who is portrayed as perfect in a real moment of uniquely female vulnerability. It normalizes what many of us go through. But sure, it’s just “for clout.” 🙄
Because apparently a lot of folks on this website need to hear it, attacking a woman for how many kids she has (or for having none) is textbook misogyny. Really gross to see this from self-described liberals because they disagree w/ a possible SCOTUS nominee. Challenge her ideas.
MIKE PENCE: “President Trump is wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people, and the American people alone. And frankly, there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president."
I continue to be in utter disbelief over the fact that Republicans apparently collectively decided that “starve jailed immigrant babies” is the move here. Not that anything should surprise me anymore.
Joe Biden continues to put America LAST by shipping pallets of baby formula to the southern border as American families face empty shelves.
This is unacceptable.
American mothers and their babies shouldn’t suffer because of the
#BidenBorderCrisis
.
I finally wrote something. Read it.
"So here I am, wondering if the conservative movement still has space for a libertarian former Republican who refuses to play the hero worship flattery games necessary to make it in Trump’s warped, ego-driven world."
Why the f is the Republican Party, institutionally, still carrying water for Trump? I understood it from a pure power play standpoint when he was president even though it was pathetic. But this doesn't even make sense. It harms them not to move on.
I don't get this as a thing. I respect the hell out of RBG, but you can't be both pro-democracy and of the belief that SCOTUS seats are monarchical positions passed down by those who once held them.
@wil_da_beast630
What?! As the owner of a corgi, I resent this premise. They’re great dogs. Smart herding animals with big personalities! Not to mention the floof.
*when I'm the token libertarian at a conservative meeting*
"So, who did you work for on the Hill?"
"
@justinamash
."
"Oh, so you really ARE libertarian."
As usual, what we can glean from this is even Trump’s biggest supporters hold him to the standard of a toddler staving off a meltdown, but everyone around the fragile ❄️—AKA the leader of the free world—is expected to be on their best behavior lest they offend his sensibilities.
I’m sorry, but I can’t get past the fact that this is an extremely unsound electoral strategy. “They did a bad thing so we’ll do something even more radical” sounds like a threat and will probably help Trump more than it hurts him. Frankly, it’s undisciplined messaging.
This is the reaction to a 20 year old singing in a contest. She’s not part of the war cabinet, she’s not in the government. She’s just from the world’s only majority Jewish country. If you’re familiar with how the world’s oldest hatred works, this looks familiar. History repeats.
BREAKING:
Around 15 000 anti-Israel protesters are marching through Malmö right now in protest against Israel being allowed to compete in Eurovision Song Contest.
They are chanting:
“We will crush zionism”
“There’s only 1 solution. Intifada revolution”
Sweden 2024…
What the hell does the Republican Party think it’s gaining institutionally at this point by behaving this way? Whenever I think there’s no bottom, I’m proven wrong.
@kelseyhuse30
I was cheated on and broken up with at 29 by the man I’d been with since I was 19. I am now married to the best man in the entire world and we are expecting our first baby three days after my 34th birthday. 😊
I have no problem with Twitter policing and labeling as false wild and inaccurate claims made by the President of the United States, but maybe pro-concentration camp propaganda from an official government account should also be treated that way?
The student government at Brandeis University, founded after the Holocaust by the U.S. Jewish community, this week voted down a resolution to condemn Hamas.
“It’s absolutely infuriating,” said a Jewish student who resigned over the 6-10-5 vote.
I’d really like an explanation from the people who say inflation is merely corporate greed. What triggers the mustache twisting as opposed to times when prices are stable? Or when they drop? When gas prices were low a few years back, were the monopoly men simply less ambitious?
Hot take: I like both
@DavidAFrench
and
@bariweiss
and think they are treated with a disproportionate and irrational amount of hatred for benign, well-within-the-mainstream opinions.
