In my English class it was never "read the text and then write about your interpretation of its meaning" it was just "we have a list of several selected points with evidence that you will memorise and rewrite during the exam". They just teach you how to get the most marks.

when I was a teenager reading fire punch on some random site it had a little comment section for every chapter. I always went wanting to see people share what their interpretations were but it was all just people saying "was this guy on drugs when he wrote this😭😭". Infuriating
