It brings me joy to finally let this out into the world.
For the past two years, I've been chipping away at creating what's become a very personal story of growth and maturity, all while combining many elements of sci-fi and fantasy that I deeply enjoy.
March on, Titanious! 🔥
-Economic recession
-Writer's strike
-Avatar
-Transformers sequel
-Live action adaptation of a Toei anime (that was also popular in Latin America)
Yep. We're back.
I swear Godzilla (and all kaiju) movies are a perfect litmus test for whether or not a "critic" can engage in any suspension of disbelief or appreciate production craft in the slightest without sneering in haughty contempt.
"I don't think I've seen a shonen anime with such emotional weight to it. Fist of the North Star is truly a classic."
"It was a revolutionary piece of Japanese media, and it shows there's more to 80's shonen than just muscles."
"ew fotns is so old and dated, watch jojo instead"
Look, I know everybody has their grievances over live action anime. But Netflix just dropped one of the best movies of the year in the form of a very stylish and soulful adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo's manga CITY HUNTER.
There was never a curse.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters gets a mixed wrap in online discourse, but I feel there's a big misread regarding the scene where Godzilla is revived via nuke by Serizawa, deeming it as an advocation for nucluear weapons.
-wrote the best episodes of Eva
-directed the special effects of the 90's Gamera trilogy
-directed Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo
-co-directed one of the best Godzilla movies
-directed one of the best Ultraman movies
Happy birthday, Higuchi-san... How does he do it?
Not trying to be cynical here in that "heh tourists" kind of way, but the response to this is kinda telling in now the general perception of Godzilla overseas has been misguided
Now that Optimus Prime is trending, I just wanna say that this dude was my childhood hero. He is everything that a leader should be, and while we're not kick-ass giant gun-slinging truck robots, Prime showed us that even in at our weakest, we can always strive to be our best.
Anyway, here are 4 Godzilla movies that aren't '54, Shin, or -1.0 that are not only just very good films, but have memorable characters with compelling stories to back them up, in addition to spectacular monster action.
I never thought this day would come. There is a campaign to remaster THE RED SPECTACLES in 4K– fully endorsed by director Mamoru Oshii and Shigeru Chiba!
The film is Oshii's first ever live-action feature, and has garnered a cult status over the years.
Even though it's not comics, and while continuity can get muddled, I think we can agree that Return of Ultraman uniting the prior Showa entries into a singular canon was a very welcoming retcon.
QTing this again, but I want y'all to know 2 things.
1.) this is the artist behind ***FIST OF THE NORTH STAR*** saying this (who is also blind in one eye)
2.) the image posted next to him was not only ***hand-panited***, it was from ***last month***
"What'd you expect? It's a kaiju movie." says someone who is completely unaware that the genre is fully capable of delivering compelling human drama and commentary on society, politics, and so forth, and then proceeds to shit on a genre they don't know a thing about.
Personally, I feel the scene is trying to suggest how nuclear energy *should* be used. Not for weapons of war, but for the good of mankind and the Earth.
A similar thing happens in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and is the same basic idea of Astro Boy.
I'm intrigued by GxK supposedly being a Showa homage, but I feel like we're not understanding how that pertains exactly.
While Godzilla's Showa era follows a particular aesthetic, each film has a unique identity with how they provide commentary and satire, as well as mix genres.
This, Shin, and Akio Jissoji's Ultra Q film are some of the best ways to get into the Ultra Series, and become exposed to its themes of hope, in addition to the franchise's surreal sci-fi elements.
If you’re a Godzilla fan and have ever been curious about Ultraman but aren’t ready to commit to a tv series I would personally recommend Ultraman: The Next. It’s an awesome mix of sci-fi and action, written by Keiichi Hasegawa (GMK) and Effects Directed by Yuichi Kikuchi (GxMG).
Been seeing a quite a few people talk about them doing a remake of The War of the Gargantuas...
What if I told y'all in 2015, Toho made a two-part pseudo sequel? 😉
People just don't wanna admit that MOTW isn't inherently a bad thing because it reminds them of Power Rangers or something, even though most of Eva's influence directly came from Ultraman.
I will never understand the critique of Eva becoming “monster of the week” in the middle
Like yes technically, but the angels are visually and mechanical different that the episodes take on different structures, it’s only repetitive on paper
If you solely associate Shin Ultraman with Hideaki Anno instead of recognizing that it's directed by Shinji Higuchi, I'm stealing something from your house
One of the big highlights of today's DAM Con: the epic crossover we all wanted.
Shout-out to IG: @/cosplay_odyssey for helping put on a good show (and that left hook)!
