Called about a new Traverse today.. After a bit they asked how I would be paying if I purchased it, I told them cash. They proceed to ask me why I would pay cash for a depreciating asset. I ask why you’d pay 7-8% interest on a depreciating asset.. don’t think they expected that.

I’d love to know the rationale behind putting “Call for price” on an item instead of just listing the price. Does that actually help sell? Personally, I’ve never called for a price and don’t see myself doing so anytime soon.

This field has been corn on corn for over 70 years, and for good reason. 30 days ago this corn was still in a bag. Now if we could just get it some more rain!

Soybeans are on the smaller side but yields have become more respectable. All in all, pretty pleased 30% into harvest. Can’t help but wonder what yields would’ve been if we hit another rain, or two, late. Thanking the Lord for what He did provide!

We got some! 1.6” overnight after swinging and missing all day long. Beyond thankful for the answered prayer! Asked for 1.5” yesterday morning at a local men’s prayer breakfast and received. Praise the Lord!

@SamTheSeedGuy1 Never. Doesn’t matter what’s ready or if weather is coming. We work hard enough for 6 days that we need the day off. Between church, family time, groceries, resting, etc it’s exactly what’s needed. It’s almost like it was designed that way, or something.

If sweet corn translates to field corn yield, watch out. Tallest sweet corn ever (7-8’), 2-3 ears per plant, absolutely massive ears. Can’t remember a sweet corn yield like these in a long, long time.

Potential was solid, both ears dropped in this pic were 18 around with only a small amount of tip back but dropping only a few days into dent will rob a ton of yield. 114 day with mid May plant date. Had a lot of growing season left!

As good as the week started, the past few days have been fully of challenges. We sit at 95% on corn and 65% on soybeans. If you told me that’d be our progress a week ago I’d have called you crazy. Praising the Lord for that! After 118 hours the past 6 days, I’m glad it’s Sunday!

Might be a long night.. soybeans still around 10.5%. Decent breeze, 71 degrees and rain coming tomorrow. With the 10 day forecast being 50s and low 60s, this might be the best cutting we get for the rest of the year. Always helps that the elevator is still open!

Well, based off today and what’s yet to come I have to assume we won’t have a seed in the ground until the second half of May. Yesterday, I realized that they moved the final plant date for corn to June 5th, if you’re wondering where my mind has been. #NWOhio #plant24

Corn leaf aphid pressure is picking up. Nearly every field has some pressure at this point, some much higher than others. I’ve never seen anything remotely close to this level of pressure.

4th day in the last 7 that we received rain. Absolute blessing. Three of the four were on days of 20% chance or less. Ended up with up to .8” Monday, up to .8” Thursday, up to .5” last night, and now this gem. More to come too! Big week ahead between the heat and pollination!

1.25” yesterday. Switched off beans and started corn harvest. I’m not sure what’s more variable, the yields or the moisture. Drying some and sending some straight to the ethanol plant.

I won’t lie, add some rain to this corn crop over the weekend and it’ll be looking really good. It’s amazing how much 75-80 degrees during the day and 50-55 degrees at night has completely flipped this crop. Tonight marks 3 full weeks without rain.

Variability will be the name of the game this fall… two hybrids, only a few feet apart. Earlier variety had the moisture and pollinated at the right time, the later…. Not so much.

I’m struggling to remember a similar 5 day stretch as this, and I’m not even including the 95 day before and after. 72+ lows 7 days straight. Most of our acres haven’t had rain since June 1st and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. Oh how quickly things can change!

With only 1.5 days worth of wheat harvest this year, I could probably afford to head for home. But it’s still running decent and with the potential for storms tomorrow, I’d rather just finish this field up tonight. Few hours tomorrow and wheat harvest will be in the books.

8” tall corn rolling at 1pm on June 1st can’t be a good sign of the future. Sure hope the 35% chance of showers on the 11th and 12th come to fruition because that’s it in the 14 day forecast. It’s early but things could get ugly in a hurry.

Decided to put a corn field and soybean field into @FieldView ’s fungicide trials this year. All summer I heard that fungicide on corn wasn’t a big deal this year. Yet it’s September 2nd and you can see plain as day where the check strips are on the scouting and vegetation maps.

Picked up another 1.1” today, more than double expected. I’d have to check my numbers but I’m fairly certain we’ve received more rain in the past 6 weeks than we did May-September last year. The wait continues, now nearly certainly into May.

@EngelstadTony When our son was about 13 months and I had to watch him during harvest I would just take his car seat and throw it in the cab of the tractor or combine and get by for a few hours. Plenty of snacks and drinks. The one day he wouldn’t eat lunch because he was having so much fun.

Spent this morning scouting each of our soybean fields. Stands are far worst than driving by at 55mph would lead you to believe. 55% of our soybeans will be replanted. With 35% of the soybeans to go, sidedressing at the door, and some corn to plant, that’s not what I hoped for.

The USDA has Ohio with a record corn (195) and soybean (58) crop. I remind myself to avoid backyarditis but the chances of a record crop here sailed a few weeks back… Maybe I’ll be surprised when harvest rolls but I’m just not seeing it.

Let me get this straight… no rain for weeks straight into a 6” rain event? I’ll believe this when I see it. If realized, we’d go from parched crops to replanting flooded out crops in a matter of days.

Counting our blessings tonight! Got a call from my dad at 6:45 tonight saying I need to come to the bins, we had a bin giving out.. thankfully he caught it right after it started as things continued moving quickly since. Slowly unloading the bin and it seems we avoided disaster.

Travelled to Chicago yesterday. NW Ohio and N Indiana is WET. Saw two planters around midnight (tomatoes) but otherwise not a single tractor the entire trip, and that’s not because everyone is finished. I’d guess 10% of the trip was planted.

Approaching midnight and we’re finally sending our last truck to the elevator. What a day! New farm record for acres and bushels off in a day. There’s still a ways to go, but suddenly the end doesn’t seem so far away.

Picked Frank up from the combine hospital today. Went into the shop Monday afternoon with some major internal damage after the cleaning fan blew apart and went through the machine. Thanks to the crew at @KennFeldGroup for the prompt repairs and keeping us moving in the meantime!

Almost had a mini heart attack when I peaked at one of the ethanol plants bid of -.60 next month… then I realized they switched to the Z but my goodness, what a crap show. -.55 for harvest, a far cry from the past few Septembers!

Well, we officially got our “if I can go wrong, it will go wrong” day out of the way for spring ‘24. Only one of four tractors still rolling. Hopefully one will rejoin early morning and the other two mid-day. It can only go up from here!

These storms better materialize and push west tonight… I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, could have a record crop on our hands locally and could end up below average. The next couple days are going to play a huge part in that.

Yesterday evening our chance of rain was eliminated through Tuesday. Woke up today, decided it’d be a good idea to check the forecast again. Well, there’s now a 100% chance of heavy thunderstorms this afternoon with at least a 40% chance every day for the next 7.
