Albedo surprises her with a gentle knock on the door, sticking his head in and waiting for her invitation. Always cautious. Never wanting to spook her. Her heart warms at the small kindness and she smiles, cheeks tinted peek as she motions him inside.

Ayato’s eyes narrow and he asks, “Why on earth would I know?”

“Leeches are like gross little dudes, but they cling to you, you know? I want to do that. Cling to you, I mean.” Itto’s face is red. He scratches his cheek with an errant claw, unable to look Ayato in the eye.

Ayato lives perfectly fine, even if it’s in the shadowed haze of Itto’s bulk. He likes it there, watching from afar. It’s easier, less messy, and he can do his work without tripping over his own heels.

There is admiration. Sucrose isn’t like bone, she is strong or long-lasting. She’s a flighty thing, prone to cracking under the smallest of pressure. And so, she wishes she was sturdy like these ossified parts that lay in her hands.

Sucrose sighs as she takes hold of it. She slides her fingers underneath the paper, wedging them in to pull apart the thick paper. It is a box. Nothing spectacular. When she shakes it rather childishly, something rolls around inside. Albedo watches like a hawk, amused.

Ayaka’s lips curl into a devious grin and she taps her chin. “No? So if I go and tell him—”
“No!” Ayato grabs her by the collar before she can get very far. Ayaka grunts as she halts, but when they meet gazes once more, she looks smug. 𝘜𝘨𝘩.

She plucks it from the box, holding it delicately in her hand, smoothing her fingers over the odd, stiff protrusion at the edge where there shouldn’t be one.

With Ayaka, his palms don’t get sweaty and heated. With Thoma, his heart doesn’t leap into his throat, beating in triple-time, his raging pulse thud thudding just below his skin. Ayato will lose his words, becoming momentarily dumb and tongue-tied as he tries to think clearly.

A silly question. It’s sweet that Itto asks, careful with his boundaries where he usually isn’t. He isn’t expecting Ayato’s fingers to curl into his vest and yank him forward.

He is unaccustomed to this. The pining. Kamisato Ayato is not a man who yearns for others, he’s a man who primarily looks out for himself. Ayaka and Thoma—sure. They also sit underneath his watchful eyes, but that and this are wildly different things.

The answer is simple, of course: the heart wants what it wants, and Ayato’s heart beats only for this man. “Itto,” Ayato tries again, his voice quieter. “Not all of us are inclined to being with others.”

“I suppose you have work for me,” she cuts in. Sweet but all business. Still skittish but there’s a small bite to her tone, a little bit of firmness now that she’s used to being his assistant.

The dip of a scapula, the way the shoulder slides inward, collecting dust. The long flat of a sternum. Rib bones, phalanges, and a mandible lined with teeth.

“Say, Ayato,” asks Itto, pausing in his plan-making. “Do you think the dude likes you back?”
Hard to tell. There isn’t a doubt that Itto enjoys their time together but Ayato hasn’t an inkling of what goes on in the oni’s head aside from his endearing catchphrases.

“I would hope so.” A diplomatic and safe response, one that Ayato hopes gives nothing away.
It must work because Itto seems none the wiser.

Yes, he’s a little dim—it still hasn’t quite hit him that Ayato is the lord of the Kamisato Estate—but he’s sweet.

Ayaka snorts again, prompting a soft hiss from Ayato. “Doesn’t Thoma need help? I’m almost certain he needs help. Go on. Be useful elsewhere.”

Earnest in the way that he wants to help others, despite maintaining that he’s a baddie who runs a gang. His enthusiasm when they fight beetles, Itto yelling out the most absurd catchphrases.

Ayaka must’ve blabbed. She’s always had a penchant for gossip, snooping around for the latest stories of what happens both in and out of the estate. Ayato knows that he isn’t exactly subtle when it comes to Itto—but it’s not as though Itto will notice.

Simple things, to her, but elegant. Sucrose treats them as though they are her children, cleaning them with care.

“Hey, little lady,” says Itto. “We guys have it rough, especially with other men. Not that Ayato needs the help or anything. He’s a catch.”

It isn’t until The Traveler says something that Ayato’s hackles are finally raised. Yes, he likes them. Yes, he even kind of trusts them—at least as far as he can throw, which is a decent enough distance.

So, perhaps not the best thing to call Itto. Or the entire part about him being dimwitted and an idiot. Ayato is usually a man of cultivated words but when he’s lovesick all that carefully coined prose just goes right out the window.
