If all this talk about Kawhi and San Diego State is annoying you, just let us have our time. Aside from pristine weather, beautiful campus, 10s across the board, access to the beach and the best burritos on the planet, what else do we have?
Doing some research on USC's roster and stumbled upon potentially the best publicity photo in college football history.
Folks, meet
@cooperlovelace1
, who bills himself as "The most flexible big man you have ever seen."
I just love this guy.
This was one wild story to report. Check out my big feature on the biggest game in the NBA - not basketball, but Bourre, or Booray. Poker meets hearts meets hardwood. Oh, and the inside scoop on the most insane story in hoops history.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson: "I'm reading all the articles people saying were the worst 4-0 team out there, writing us off. My boys came in here with a chip on their shoulder. I think I said on Monday, see how Washington keeps up with us. I’m turnt up right now."
Smiling Brian Dutcher, to me, in the locker room, one final answer: "It's college basketball. If you can't enjoy it, you're in the wrong profession. There are times it's frustrating but when you're on the biggest stage, the game you dream of being in, why wouldn't you smile?"

My best friend is a 3rd grade teacher in Big Sur, one of the wealthiest school districts in CA. Students are mostly children of luxury resort service workers. Most very low income. Little internet. He’s teaching by phone! To third graders!
Absolutely loved writing this feature on stud

and his remarkable map of Los Angeles' best food joints. Dude has one Vor-acious appetite for football and food. Legendary stories from
@JonahMonheim
and Brett Neilon.
My mom died early Friday morning. It was a peaceful ending to a sad time in her life. She was never the same after my sister Amy died. Probably because they were so alike. Thanks to the
@TucsonStar
for letting me share a story. And thanks to the
@TucsonRodeo
for making her day.
A touching tribute from
@ByJonGold
on sharing the joy of the
@TucsonRodeo
with his mom. Judith Gold passed away Friday at 76 years old, on the eve of the opening day of Southern Arizona's 99th Fiesta de Los Vaqueros.
Larry Scott announces he’s leaving Pac-12, immediately two P12 women’s teams in title game, one men’s basketball team in Final Four. My people call that kismet.
Billy Knight was one of my favorite UCLA basketball players to watch. Tyler Honeycutt was one of my favorite Bruins to cover. We are in desperate times, people. Love each other. Lift each other. Help each other.
This piece by
@iamcolinquinn
, on the declining state of the yellow cab industry in New York - really, on the declining state of New York in general - is so harrowing. We're not going to have anything left.
UCLA vs. Arizona, 2013. Myles Jack had 6 carries for 120 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown run. BTW, he was a true freshman linebacker. I've never seen anything like it, before or after. Sad to see him hang 'em up. Happy he's at peace.

LB Myles Jack is retiring from the NFL, per
@RapSheet
. A former second-round pick of the Jaguars, Jack said he considered a career-change before signing with Philadelphia.
Now sounds like he's officially moving on.
The Bronx Zoo is offering people the chance to Name A Roach for those looking for a unique Valentine's Day gift.
I'd suggest Papa, but only as a last resort.
Maybe my favorite part of my SDSU Final Four experience: Taking the Daily Aztec crew to my favorite deli, Kenny & Ziggy’s, and introducing them to both Ziggy and chopped liver. Student journalism matters, now possibly more than ever.

@DAztecSports
Feeling conflicted and sad today. Chris made covering UCLA hell, partly because he relished being “the senior writer” on the beat, partly because I was a pompous 25yo who did questionable shit, partly because he was a consummate beat writer who cared about every bit of minutiae.
Ben Bolch reports that former Times staff writer Chris Foster passed away last night after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Covered UCLA and many things for the L.A. Times. RIP.
So sad tonight to hear of the passing of Andra Dellins, beloved wife of former long-time UCLA SID Marc Dellins. One of my favorite memories from the UCLA days was watching her receive a game ball from Rick Neuheisel after practice in 2009, as players gave her a standing ovation.
MVP of this Arizona/Mississippi State game: Petros Papadakis. Most entertaining voice in college football, much less the Pac-12.
@Theoldp
is appointment TV and radio.
It’s a little weird to share a name and profession with one of my idols. But Jonathan Gold was the standard. We all wanted to be him. He made criticism fun. He made writing, which is so fucking lonely, so fucking fun. I’ll never forget him describing the John Holmes burrito. Sad.
@gangrey
Do you just randomly own a crepe-maker? Can one make crepes without a crepe-maker? Do you have the Crepe stick to flatten it out? The Crepe Scraper, if you will? So many questions. Anyway...be well my man.
I am from Thousand Oaks. I’ve danced at Borderline. I’ve gone to high-school reunions there. I’ve gotten drunk there. I’ve listened to country music there. It could have been me who was killed last night. It could have been any of us. It can happen in your town. It will, unless.
Kliavkoff: "I've been spending four weeks trying to defend against grenades being lobbed by the Big-12 trying to destabilize our conference. I get why they're trying to destabilize us."

In Back to the Future, Marty meets Doc at Twin Pines Mall, in honor of Ol' Man Peabody's treasured pines. As Marty flashes back to 1955, he crashes into one of the two trees and drives off (Peabody: "My pines!"). When Marty comes BACK to 1985, he returns to LONE PINE MALL.
Pretty cool new gig: I'll be writing features for the XFL this season about all eight teams, league-wide trends, behind-the-scenes, etc.
Yesterday, watching a new team take flight, was pretty cool.

's advice to a man who lost his dad on Halloween, and doesn't know how to celebrate his favorite holiday now, takes it to another level. Some of the most beautiful, heart-felt advice I've ever heard. If you've lost someone, listen.
It’s my mom’s 73rd birthday tomorrow, and she’ll be alone, scared and 3,000 miles from the only people who love her. If you could wish her a happy birthday today, I’m sure she’d love it. I’ll show her tomorrow and she’ll be happier. Make her day.
UCLA and Team USA men's volleyball coach
@JohnSperaw

are trying to build the sport nationally. One of their goals is to bring MVB to underserved communities so they started with HBCUs. I wrote about this effort in today's

Programming note: Not only is this the Pac-12’s last game, it’s my last game. Tuesday I start a dream job as Brand Editorial Manager for

and get out of the nightmare that is college football.
Writing and talking about cards and collectibles. What’s better?
Heading back to Thousand Oaks for three weeks in three days and I'm so excited to spend some quality time with family and friends and eat at Toppers and eat at Toppers and eat at Toppers and eat at Toppers.
To a 12-year-old chubby white kid in 1996, from Los Angeles enclave Thousand Oaks, less than an hour from the Great Western Forum, Kobe was a a young god. Our prince. We watched him grow up as we grew up, as sure of his potential as our own. When he won, we won.
Introduced Rams linebacker Nnamaka Ebukam
@samysosa_3
to Toppers Pizza. Love Toppers was changed to "a hip pizza spot in Thousand Oaks." Exactly.
You might know him as Samson Ebukam, now Nnamaka, his given name, but either way, you'll remember him.
My first story for
@TheAthletic
is a good one.
Tyler Tidwell was a Navy football legend, one of the country’s finest Marines and his family’s pillar. He was a hero.
He still is.
Read about the fight of his life.
Welp, now it’s official. Anyone who knows me knows I bleed Lancer green, and now, two decades after graduating (WTF?!) Thousand Oaks High School, I’m returning to my beloved alma mater as journalism teacher and adviser for
@thelancernewspaper
. School starts next Wednesday.
Spent 40 minutes tonight talking with my childhood hero
@toby_bailey
about the ‘95 championship UCLA squad. Coronavirus quarantine? It was my best Friday night in three years.
She battled illness for a long time but died peacefully, holding Marc’s hand. I spent countless days in the stands watching practice with her. She loved UCLA sports, and being at Marc’s side. Another sad day among many. My heart is with Marc and their family.
Incredible stat: The Pac-12 did not have even one team ranked No. 1 for even one week since Week 12 2012. Oregon spent one week at 1 and promptly lost to Stanford. No team spent even one week at No. 2 since Oregon in 2014.
Joining my oooooold buddies
@PetrosAndMoney
this hour to talk about
@jeaniebuss
and how she uses laughter to heal, as I wrote about this week. I missed the dulcet tones of
@Theoldp
and
@timcates
. Yes, I walked my bike.
Incredible win tonight for
@TOLancers
. Watching the game from the sidelines with 20+ guys I played HS football with 20 years ago is the greatest thing ever. Proud to be a Lancer.
Warning: I will be completely insufferable for the next week, on the measure of
@daviddavidwoods
every day, so if you’re an old LA sportswriter who loves crapping on happiness, feel free to unfollow.

I just turned in the UCLA story for the NCAA Final Four program. That was unexpected, and so, so cool. Spring for a copy. favorite anecdote: Jaime Jaquez’ mom finding an abandoned basketball hoop during the pandemic, and Jaime grabbing it and putting it up. He got his shots in.
Can’t imagine possibly being prouder of
@tohsthelancer
staff for putting out their first issue of the school year. A lot of hours, effort and heart went into this. The first of many. Gives me faith in our future.
Just spent 10 minutes in the SDSU locker room with manager-turned-assistant Dave Velasquez, with the program for more than two decades. For us Aztec OGs, this is an unfathomable moment...and entirely fathomable at the same time. As Steve Fisher said: "I dared to dream."
Hey I launched my web site today and it has a bunch of my stories and hopefully soon a blog and a podcast and also Stand Up Sit Downs, a place for comedians to tell there stories the right way, the way they deserve to be told. Funny people are good.
Editors: In nine days I leave on a two-week cross-country move from NYC to LA with stops in DC, Durham, ATL, New Orleans, Houston, Austin, El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix. I'm hoping to write stories across the board - sports, politics, culture, food. Hire me to write some bangers.
Loved catching up with Craig Ehlo about The Shot, The Doc, and when your best isn’t good enough because the other team’s best includes Michael damn Jordan. A candid convo with Ehlo about Ron Harper’s comments and more, for
@yardbarker
.
Thinking tonight of Tyler, Cassi and Bobby Tidwell. Tyler, the Navy football star, the toughest Marine you'd ever meet, beloved by friends and family. Cassi, the wife who cared for him as he was besieged by ALS. Bobby, the father, who watched his son get sick. Tyler died today.
My first story for
@TheAthletic
is a good one.
Tyler Tidwell was a Navy football legend, one of the country’s finest Marines and his family’s pillar. He was a hero.
He still is.
Read about the fight of his life.
Chip Kelly: "Dorian Thompson-Robinson has grown in all aspects. He's physically matured; the work he's put in trying to make his body bigger, faster, stronger - the work he's put in has been invaluable."
Well this is amazing. I've been reading the
@vcstar
for more than 30 years. It was the paper of my childhood. And I'll be on the cover tomorrow with this incredible story of Marine Captain Corey Mazza and his efforts to get his Afghan interpreter out of harm's way. What an honor!
Weird to see two months worth of bylines and paychecks disappear in two days. So now that I’ll have all that non-sports-watching on my hands, I’m freed up to pursue my passion: A 500-page oral history on the Kevin Bacon classic, Tremors.
Really broken up about the death of Ralph Cirella from the Howard Stern Show. Didn’t expect to be so sad. What a weird, funny, weasely instigator. Some classic radio, and you know Howard loved him. He definitely stole the $200, but he seemed like a good dude. So sad.

Huge win for
@EvanYabu
, who made my week on Tuesday. Called to help one of my
@tohsthelancer
students set up an interview. Stops me in my tracks - "Jon, hold up. You were my outdoor school camp counselor 20 years ago..." I'll be taking credit for
@TOLancers
undefeated season now.
UCLA and college hoops fans: I caught up with
@TyusEdneyUCLA
, Kris Johnson (
@PointForwardPro
) and Jim Harrick to talk about 4.8 seconds and the '95 title, 25 years later. Eleven-year-old Jon would have died and gone to heaven.
Glad this finally saw the light of day. A 3+ year process to tell the story of
@JeanieBuss
and her foray into stand-up comedy. After a brutal run of personal losses, Jeanie found a way to laugh again. And more importantly, to spread laughter.
I feel sick for his wife and his son, whom he loved deeply. And for his Times colleagues, some of whom he treasured greatly. He & Chris Dufresne both died far too young and too close, but it gives me some comfort believing they’re talking shit about UCLA fans somewhere, somehow.
The Lakers meeting with Kawhi Leonard was Tues afternoon at a hotel in Westlake Village. Only Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka were there, at KL’s request. The location had been switched from El Segundo, at KL’s request, w/ in 24 hrs. It appears KL met with PG, nearby, same day.
