I think Richard Feynman had a bad influence on the American physics community by convincing many of them that it was "cool" to be a philistine about philosophy.
I actually think something like this is true - our best thinkers tend to have a variety of interests across what we'd call the humanities/sciences divide. Doesn't mean they're good at everything, just means they tend to take more than one thing seriously.
