CBC Team and Listeners: thanks for making waking up in the middle of the night the best decision of my life to date. I look forward to making the last several weeks of our time together the best yet, you guys are all stars!
Meteorological musings from myself will be irregular over the next several days - thanks to some personal news (I'm happy to say I'm getting married on Saturday).
If I lived in Newfoundland or CB I'd be topping up the propane for the bbq/generator and getting emergency supplies ready today. Once official messaging begins the stores will be a zoo.... Just a thought.

Today I learned that they will write on you prior to surgery (NO on left leg, YES on right). Got 2 plates and several screws put in today, after shattering my right ankle and breaking my fibula playing 🏒. Thanks to all med staff who have attended to me so far ♥️
Significant snow looking more likely for Southern NB, PEI and, NS Christmas late morning into Christmas night. Plan ahead when traveling to those Christmas dinners.
Detailed weather with a smile, one last time coming up on your local CBC radio 1 stations. You'll want to tune in as I cover the first region wide winter storm of this season for the weekend.
If it is too soon for location and magnitude of impacts for the Leeward Islands, it is way way too soon to be jumping into deterministic outcomes for the eastern seaboard. Question your sources of information folks.

expected to rapidly intensify into an extremely dangerous hurricane by the weekend. Stay up to date with the latest at
Heavy bands of snow developing offshore associated with mid level frontogensis. Snowfall rates will quickly ramp up in overnight in the coming hours.

We definitely need to do a full review of phone/ Telecom services before the next one. It is essential people be able to contact emergency services during or immediately after storms.
Folks in Maritimes, good idea to take vulnerable decorations in tmr. Winds high Monday, could be particularly nasty in S NB, SW NS and W PEI in the Southwesterlies.

Water vapour imagery this evening. A seemingly endless stream of moisture being directed into eastern NS. WV retrograding slightly westward as the parent trough takes a on negative tilt on route to becoming fully cut off. This process is what will allow snow to redevelop in HRM
For HRM most of the snow will fall tonight through tomorrow afternoon ~20-30cm. Then there will be a break in the snow Saturday night that will allow for clearing etc. Sunday another round of snow ~10-15 cm with stronger winds and blowing snow. Event totals ~ 30-45cm.

actually managed to cool on its final approach to landfall... IR temps ~-70C pretty rare to see in a hurricane at this latitude.
More details here:
But decided to make a map... wind and surge damage in NS could be "memorable", please take this storm seriously.

Official warnings:
An extreme degree of uncertainty remains, but a rather significant event is on the table starting tomorrow night, particularly for eastern Nova Scotia. I'd recommend following official weather forecasts closely next 24 -48 hours. ❄️
#Nsstorm
Biggest issue with up coming rainfall will be the vast majority of it falls in 3-6 hrs. Rainfall rates will increase the risk of flooding. Normally a rainfall warning is issued for 50mm in 24hrs or less, we could see that in 3 hours or less. As illustrated below.
#NSstorm
The upcoming ice storm for most of NS is not something you see very often. Time to start preparing for extended power outages, if you access water via pump powered well consider filling up water bottles or your tub.

I wrote off a career in meteorology as a hobby, it took one failed attempt at getting into medical school to change my mind. Best decision I've ever made.

Can't take upcoming storm at a 10:1 SLR verbatim especially northwest of YHZ. Too much vertical motion 700-500mb through a deep DGZ after midnight Monday. Strong frontogenesis, snowfall rates 5-10cm an hour likely. Luckily it's a fast mover.

Worked hard to find undrifted areas. Looks to be just over 25cm downtown Dartmouth accounting for the bezel on the ruler. Snow done, just light IP now.
#nsstorm
Western half of NS including HRM at highest risk of nocturnal thunderstorms tonight. 100mm+ in 6 hours or less possible should these develop...
#NSstorm
Just spotty showers today; but rain developing N NB.
A N-S band of rain with t-storms moves into western areas tonight crossing eastern areas Wed.
30-60mm N & W NB with 15-30mm south. Thunderstorms will add ~20mm (so risk 80mm total N NB & 50mm Atl coast NS).
More rain Fri.

expected to be a large and intense major hurricane in the mid Atlantic. Will have to watch for potential trough interactions in 10 days time for

Perhaps extend public transit to a few of the popular beaches around the HRM, allows those without vechicle to also take in Canada's ocean playground and limit the need for trafficjams like this on hotdays!

Upcoming system's twists and turns won't stop - recent southern model solutions verifying poorly against radar and observations in southern New England. Pay attention to the observations in Boston today - note HRRR correcting back northward last few runs.

Time for a little trip home, see you soon

I'm having mixed feelings about potentially missing the first widespread

snowfall of the season, during the middle of next week ;)
Band of heavier snow will continue to drift away from HRM. Break will present a clearing opportunity for many today. Take advantage of it... Won't be fun doing it all tomorrow when the stronger winds really kick in. (Northerly gusts 70-80km/h)
#nsstorm
Thoughts on upcoming system: usually significant freezing rain that can lead to power outages is limited to localities well outside the urban core towards YHZ-Hammond's plains. 300-400ft of elevation often the difference between very little icing to significant impacts.

Confidence is growing for a significant winter storm starting mid day Friday for NS, PEI and southern 1/2 of NB. Some details still uncertain, especially Atlantic coast of NS.
