New MN flag is official now! I think this flag is a good design and it's growing on me. It's now up to the people of Minnesota if it becomes more than it's design.

Snowflakes aren't weak. They cause us to slow down and change our plans - forcing us, as a state, to work together to clear them. They provide us recreation and beauty. Snowflakes should not be embarrassing or an insult.
However... This flag does NOT contain a snowflake. 1/
Just make it a snowflake and be done.
This state is made up of very very very weak people. The snowflake would symbolize that weakness.

I have so many thoughts about these. Thread.
1. These were produced by unnamed graphic designers at the request of the SERC (in-house/firm). The original designers have had little input. Generally, the SERC has not been eager to accept revisions from the actual designers.

Think about viewing this flag from a distance, all the nice detail will be lost. How would it be distinct from the other 30 states with seals on their flags?

Many folks have asked if I am considering revisions to the

F29 flag. Indeed I have. Revision is a natural part of the design cycle.

MN green is a nice accent color on the dark blue in print - as a major color? On a flag in the elements? it will fade to white

2. Elements of the three eliminated flags are very present. Dakota stars, Snowstars, 8pointers. I was not consulted on my opinion on this. Legally they don't have to. However, it would have been a nice gesture.

To the Nordics it is represented as the selburose, it has strong significance to the Dakota, and the 8pt star was used in Underground Railroad's hidden messaging through references to the North Star in quilting patterns. 3/

I'm quite upset that the SERC didn't offer the chance for Andrew to collaborate on revisions with the consultants. He should have been involved throughout.
This design is going to follow him for his life. Therefore, I'm glad he likes how it turned out, and it won't haunt him.

Flags are for people, not our occupations or even our geographic surroundings. Our flag should demonstrate what our shared values are, and what we want Minnesota to be.
That's why I like the North Star, it's a guiding light pointing us to this refuge of freedom, pointing home.
Minnesota farmers face their likely absence from the state flag: "What are we if we are just one thing?"

6. All this said, the SERC was put in a tough spot by the bill and some late appointments leading to some of these decisions.
Good final products come from good processes. Some of these flags ARE BETTER for these revisions, but there's so much more we could have seen weeks ago.

Listening in to the latest Flag redesign meeting. The MN SERC received over 15k public comments on the flag redesign. 6k on the seal.

3/3 The Snowflake: Winter We embrace it. Put on a sweater and stay warm. As a bonus this is also the shape of the star on the floor in the rotunda of the Capitol building in Saint Paul.

Confirmed. The flag on the right is indeed upside down. Possible that's an intentional choice as a sign of protest, but it would be an odd choice if the point is to promote the old flag.

Only one flag got 5 votes in the first cut.

Commission members are now discussing how to proceed as they narrow it down from 216 to 5.

I also think this flag was a "canvas" the SERC could play with and they wanted to play. No other finalist flag went through more revisions or was better able to handle the "combinations" with other flags they talked so much about.

I think we avoided worst-case scenarios. I said "good" and not "great". Definite improvement. Rights a historical wrong.
If Minnesotans fly it, it can elevate it. Like Texas flag, its more than its design because people fly it and take pride in it.

Blue: Minisota’ Sky-tinted water: The land of 10,000 lakes. The Great Lakes begin in Duluth. The Mighty Mississippi is formed in our state. If any state has a case to have a blue flag, it is Minnesota. 1/3

I'm glad he's connecting it to the success of Scandinavia - arguably the highest taxed, yet happiest place on Earth.
The Scandinavian model used today can also trace its roots partly to the North Shore of Minnesota.
