The Mayor & police chief called
#AmirLocke
a suspect and he was not. The mayor said he banned no-knock warrants and he did not. Did it feel good, Minneapolis, to suspend your disbelief for a few minutes in the ballot box last fall? They’ve shown you who they are.
So weird how the same country that is quickly and efficiently managing to build tent cities for children at the border wasn’t able to provide quick relief for or save the lives of thousands of Puerto Ricans.

For non-Minnesotans, when right wingers like Loomer tell you
@IlhanMN
is for sharia law & anti-gay, you’re being played (can’t believe this needs to be said). Ilhan is a feminist, an ally of the LGBTQ community who took heat for supporting marriage equality. Loomer is a bigot.
Conservatives saying Kamala isn’t a descendant of slaves because her father was Jamaican almost make me wish I was still teaching Caribbean/Latin American history. Right now I’d be working on a syllabus for a class titled “How TF do you think Black people got to the Caribbean?”
What is happening in Minneapolis right now is a rebellion—of the police against the city they work for. The way they get back at people-esp politicians-who criticize them is to get violent with protestors. They know electeds might be held accountable but they never will be.
There is something deeply pathological about the culture of law enforcement that this was leaked & that a warrant looked for drugs—but there is also something pathological about media reporting the leak as anything other than “INNOCENT MAN SMEARED BY POLICE.”

Minneapolis’s mayor on the supposedly dangerous precedent set by the ride share ordinance: “Are we now planning to set a minimum wage for every industry?”
Tired of Republican Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka protecting Bob Kroll & the police union? There are ten senate seats held by MNGOP that Walz-Flanagan won in 2018. If we flip them, Gazelka is no longer majority leader. Starting a thread to post info about DFL challengers.
I'm out of town and hoping friends stay safe in Minneapolis. Take refuge in the many, many welcoming places in the city

DOJ Report that after the murder of George Floyd, there was a 35% drop in MPD reporting racial data in police stops. Their reaction to the world demanding they stop hurting Black and Brown people: stop collecting data on Black and Brown people.
There is something odd happening with reporting of crime in Minneapolis these days. First, almost every reporter relays MPD’s statements as fact, even as they have all seen as recently as in their original recounting of Floyd’s murder, that MPD has a problem with the truth.

Friends in Minneapolis: please post pics of things you are seeing firsthand. It looks like there is an active, coordinated disinformation campaign happening designed to scare everyone and distract from things actually happening elsewhere in the city.
I have lived among the Minnesotans for almost 20 years. It takes time to become accustomed to their ways. They are a sturdy people who wear their quirks with stubborn pride. Your confusion/disdain literally gives them life.

So imagine you are harassed by a police officer and file a complaint. After some time, you file a data practices request to find out if that officer has been disciplined. That officer will be immediately informed you requested that information. READ. THIS. AGAIN.
This statement is shortsighted, misguided and presumptuous about a context the congresswoman doesn’t understand in a city that …checks notes…she does not represent.
INBOX: U.S. Rep. Angie Craig comes out against Minneapolis public safety ballot initiative that would replace the police dept. and create a new dept. under city council control. Her district covers southern Twin Cities suburbs incl. Lakeville and Eagan
I must underscore this point, as a labor guy. By any logical assessment, the Minneapolis Police Federation went into negotiations with what should have been a weaker hand. They had, after all, brought global shame upon the city and Minnesota.

The minimum wage increase is supported broadly across party lines. She’s not voting like a moderate dem. She’s voting like a right wing nut on this issue.
“Identity politics” is the pejorative term used by the right to describe any assertion of rights by marginalized groups—that a left publication like Jacobin would use it shows just how successful the right and white supremacists have been at dividing us.
Centrist Democrats embraced identity politics in the 2016 election. Surprise, surprise — they’re now working to keep diverse candidates out who threaten their power.
Can’t wait to see the readout when President Biden invites Governor Walz to the White House. Dad jeans, dad jokes, a Bruce and Bob Seger playlist, and then they’ll sit and watch the History Channel together.

. So the logic is: Elizabeth Warren was required to endorse Bernie to save people who are dying, but come November, disappointed Bernie supporters are not required to vote for Joe Biden to save people who are dying. Did I get that right?
This Minneapolis family saw flashing lights behind them and pulled to the side of the road.
Seconds later, officers pulled out their guns and ordered them out of the car.
Then, every officer with a body cam that was recording turned it off or muted it
@KSTP
Saint Paul has had encampments go up and go down. I’ve seen this & wondered why we haven’t had scenes like this. Turns out, the mayor’s office has taken charge, gotten folks housed, and encampments have gone down with police at a distance. The Deputy Mayor has even been present.
We can’t arrest our way out of this affordable housing crisis. What if we spent money on housing + services for unsheltered folks instead of police?
Housing insecurity is a public safety issue.
If only there had been a tragic case that drew national attention to the dangers of no-knock warrants—one that even caused some jurisdictions to change laws allowing the practice—maybe this tragedy could have been avoided

How many rogue officers can one department have before we realize that maybe it’s the norm that’s the problem and not the “rogue”? A rogue MPD officer would be one who acknowledges George Floyd was murdered. A rogue cop would be one who speaks out against their union president.
WCCO, like others, report on crime as if it were somehow being caused by recent efforts to reimagine community safety in Minneapolis. But wait, MPD hasn’t been defunded or reimagined yet. If something is failing it’s the department in its current form.
When the eyes of the world were on MN because of George Floyd’s murder, we looked to

Reminder: Officer Colleen Ryan was disciplined by Mayor Frey’s police department for speaking *anonymously* to GQ about the toxic work culture at MPD. These officers spoke in uniform to a right wing propaganda outlet and the mayor wants you to believe he just found out about it.

presents under the tree. Or maybe I’m confused about what’s supposed to happen today. Can someone explain over brunch? There’s going to be brunch, right?
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but part of the reason we lost House seats is that districts are gerrymandered as hell so our 2018 wave had us winning seats that would always be tough to defend. So maybe focus on that instead of throwing Black and trans folks under the bus.

: Our senior senator often gets grief from right and left (myself included) for playing it safe. The senator’s speech on the floor today showed the value of her style and reputation. Yesterday’s Kavanaugh outburst was outrageous by any standard...
This is hilarious. They literally asked a judge to throw out the ballot question altogether but now try to pretend they want to work with the other side in good faith? Here is what I suspect is going on…
Three city residents who filed a lawsuit over the Minneapolis police ballot question ask the city and
@Yes4Minneapolis
to work with them to write new ballot language.
The Minnesota Supreme Court has agreed to take the case on an accelerated timeline.
whatever one thinks about bringing the issue of the drowned child into the campaign—(I think it’s fair but others disagree)—it’s one thing for a private person to do so & entirely another for the candidate himself to make a joke rooted in the fact that a child died on his watch.
This is astounding. This mayor, ostensibly a democrat, seems unaware of the broad societal (not to mention partisan) support for minimum wages. Yes, mayor industries should have standards and regulation. Welcome to governing.

decimated him. 2. She won by a bigger margin than Karin Housley beat her unknown opponent, with way more people voting.
Even after the world’s eyes were on Minneapolis, even after the years of embarrassments represented by Bob Kroll and the police union generally, when he had the chance, Jacob Frey handed the police union a better contract then they had before.

MPD’s bold new approach to ending disparities in use of force against Black people: stop gathering data on it! Unsurprising behavior from a corrupt department that has brought worldwide infamy to Minnesota.

I uploaded this video with permission of Mike Forceia of the American Indian Movement. This MPD officer is quite candid about admitting what we all know: if they can’t police like Derek Chauvin they won’t police at all.

The best argument for keeping cops out of schools is being made by police themselves when they tell us they won’t do the job unless they can choke your kids. Did you know there is no special certification cops in schools are required to pass—like school nurses do?

Maybe the city needs to create a PTSD fund for the residents of the city who live with their consequences of these officers’ behavior. Please. Can we just call this what it is, a cop sick out staged for a press release?
People being depressed when literally millions of votes have not been counted in all of the key states are doing Trump’s disinformation work for him. He is not ahead. We do not know who is ahead until the votes are counted. Everyone needs to chill TF out.

, the DFL Senate Minority leader who led the charge to victory in that chamber. It’s bittersweet because she will no longer be in the senate due to redistricting and a male colleague whose ego was more important than caucus leadership.
You hope? There’s a Senate bill to ban the practice. Is there a House companion you can sign onto? If not, why not draft one. We, regular citizens, can “hope” this ends. You can actually make that happen.

So here, in one post, is all you need to know about Jacob Frey: he believes in nothing. All it took was one poll to turn him from the guy who spent A YEAR & A HALF opposing the creation of a Department of Public Safety to the guy saying “we can do it without a charter change!”
