The average person stays at a job 4.3 years now.
One huge mindset shift we made at Portal was to manage, hire, promote and train from this angle.
ie How do we build people up so Portal is a huge launchpad for them and their career.
The result is people love being apart of

Monaco is an incredibly tight street circuit with virtually no overtaking opportunities. If you get pole, you have to make a big mistake to not finish first.
Past champion Nelson Piquet once described Monaco as like riding a bicycle around your living room.
USAA is the biggest farce in the history of insurance.
They only sell their insurance products to veterans and families of those veterans.
They make it seem like they are getting access to something special.
The special thing they get are super high rates and average
Your insurance didn’t go up bc insurance companies are greedy and wanted to line their pockets.
Your insurance went up bc insurance companies are losing money and trying to stay afloat.

it's true. They overcharge and people stay because they somehow think it's "patriotic". It's a money making scheme designed to make members feel they are being un patriotic if they go to Geico or State Farm. In the meantime, they are ridiculously overcharged.

Hot take
I regularly tip 25-30% at restaurants and in situations where I receive service
However, I am sick of being pressured in to tipping in situations that absolutely, positively do not call for it…where zero service was received.. in order to make up for companies not

I was completely caught off guard and totally honored to be asked by Will and the fine folks at Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America to be on the cover of their November issue of Independent Agent Magazine, a magazine which goes out to basically every independent
In 2023 Lemonade grew its customer base by 219,370 customers.
Their average premium per customer of $369.
That's $80,947,530.
They spent $102,000,000 on sales and marketing (a 26% decrease from 2022).
DTC companies (including Lemonade) like to say that because they don't
Yesterday, I sent an LOI for an out of state agency we are trying to purchase.
This morning I’m sending a job offer to a producer in another state we want to expand to.
This afternoon, I will cut a large check for the proprietary tech we built for our agency to make our
Many real estate investors shoot themselves in the foot when buying coastal property.
Here’s how:
The insurance.
If you are a real estate investor who isn’t located in a coastal region but are buying coastal property or thinking about it, this is for you.
Here’s what

If the average insurtech bro spent a week at my agency (or any for that matter) they would have a shocking realization that disruption isn’t going to be as easy as they thought and that they barely have scratched the surface.
No that’s not an open invite.
As insurance markets get tougher, more business is going to E&S carriers, and our team at Portal is no exception, especially in coastal areas.
I don't brag much, but there probably isn't an agency our size that's as good at E&S as we are..
Here's a snapshot into our E&S

My thoughts on what's going on with Nationwide Insurance 👇🏻
First, I would like to say that this is just complete speculation on my part.
I have no inside intel and my agency only writes with Nationwide through a market access agreement meaning I am twice removed from dealing

It’s crazy that I can order a pizza from dominos and tell you exactly when it’s going to be done and who’s working on it.
But I have to go to 17 different websites to get something done for my client.
Pizza co’s are more connected than insurance agents to carriers.
Florida’s insurance market is in shambles.
Carriers are refusing to write and rates are through the roof.
But contrary to popular belief, Florida doesn’t have a hurricane problem. It has at attorney problem.
Here’s my 3 step process to fix the Florida insurance market. 🧵
After several years of frustrations with the carriers that Portal Insurance represents we have finally pulled the trigger on building our own personal lines rater.
We are starting with 6 of our home carriers. YTD our team has spent 192 hours quoting these carriers this year.
People in BNI groups should have to disclose that the referral they are giving you is from a referral group they are in….
And that the referral is forced rather than from someone they would actually recommend if they were not in said cult.

Every time an insurtech founder talks about how they are disrupting the industry while simultaneously doing absolutely nothing different than established insurance carriers… an angel loses its wings….
I figured insurance twitter would like this.
An old printing device for a certificate of insurance.
Here’s an important question….how many agencies are still using something like this?
More insurance carriers should focus relentlessly on the customer
Apple wins because it is obsessed with pleasing customers
Same with Uber, same with Amazon.
The customer should always come first
Agents...during these difficult times remember which carriers treated you right and reasonably when they come back asking for business in 2 years.
Carriers..see above.
Fun fact:
I haven't worn anything but

Another Fun fact:
Portal has sold more insurance in 4 years than I ever thought imaginable.

Auto insurance premiums are at all-time highs.
BUT my bet is that they will rise even further.
It's not rocket science—It's data:
Today, a record 14% of drivers do not have car insurance.
Un-frickin-insured.
Craziest part? That number is up nearly 30% since 2019 (!)

Steal it, copy it, rip it off because it works and will get your client’s claims on the right path.
Had a carrier CEO show up at the office today.
When he walked in I was wearing a hoodie, running shoes and had 1/2 of a a chicken tender hanging out of my mouth.
He sat down, chit chatted, told me he was giving me an appointment, shook my hand and left.

Selling property & casualty insurance is the greatest occupation.
1.People have to buy it.
In many cases it’s mandated. Mortgage, car loan, owning a business, etc.
2.There is a lot of average competition.
Many people start off strong and then rest on the laurels. This +

Carrier CEO stopped by the office yesterday.
Loved my sign.
We spend the whole meeting talking about King of the Hill.
I’ll be sending them more business.
Build a relationship with your agents/carriers.
It goes further
What if I told you that a home buyer doesn’t want to talk about the insurance policy for 35 minutes....they just want you to get it done so they can close on the house!
My wife will give birth to our son in about 3 or so weeks. I’m going to disconnect and take 2 months off from my businesses/various projects. I see this also as an opportunity to get caught up on some reading. What books do you recommend? 👇🏻
In Q1 of 2024 $LMND wrote $47 million in new premium.
They spent $30.4 million on sales and marketing in the same time frame.
Effectively paying 63.8% “commission”.
But they save the customer money because they don’t work with agents thus “saving 15%”.
If you thought insurance wasn’t action packed you’ve never spent time in an insurance office the week of a possible hurricane where 1/2 your carriers are under binding restrictions, the other 1/2 are slowly shutting down by the minute and you still have policies to bind.
Every insurtech carrier within 1-2 years of launch:

Every insurtech carrier 3 years later after horrible loss ratios, retention, outrageously high CAC, incredibly low trading price:

Roofers going door to door, pointing out hail damage that doesn’t exist, requiring AOBs to be signed to even do the job..milking the policy so they can get all the money they want, inflating prices so the insured doesn’t have to pay deductibles (which is fraud)… totally
Had an interesting chat with my E&O agent recently.
As far as I am concerned, she’s the

Looks at more insurance agency E&O policies than anyone.
Sees everyone’s revenue, warts, wins, losses, etc.
She said something
Why would anyone live in California?
Here’s what a $1,500,000 annual income looks like in California.

- Social Security: $9,114
- Medicare: $33,450
- State Disability: $1,602
- Total Tax: $741,886
Before I speak at an insurance conference I always stroll through the vendor hall to make sure none of the carriers I’m making fun of in my talk are sponsors.
Good morning to everyone except carriers who say they want younger agents and then don’t appoint those agents because they aren’t operating like “our agents have always done it”
Carriers that refuse to go on comparative raters are stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.
Long term, at scale, they will miss opportunities.
Double entry and lack of efficiency is the biggest threat to IA’s. This is the problem carriers need to be helping us solve rather
