It says a lot about the current writers’s lack of direction or identity that the two best cast members all-around in this cast: Ego Nwodim and JAJ, mostly spend a lot of shows this season just doing so, while lesser performers seem to get minimum 5 minutes of airtime each week.

Strong promo; favorite of the season after another watch. Dakota’s deadpan was excellent, as well was the lime reference thrown at the end. I hope the writers/cast see Dakota’s subtle humor and utilize it to the best of their abilities come Saturday. Her show could be great.

Very fitting promo for Syndey Sweeney’s episode; Michael’s deadpan is perfect here and he really sells this premise with his reliable dryness. Michael has been criminally underused in general this season, so hopefully he gets more to do this episode.

In the corporate, cold SNL of recent decades, tender & funny pieces such as this feel so powerful to me. Great escalating, subtle absurdity; quick pacing and a stellar performance by Maya; a role I could’ve seen Jan & Gilda nail as much as she did making this a timeless piece.

One of the more genuinely fun, silly sketches of the season, with flashbacks to Soul Train/Les Jeunes de Paris, with very fun energy; JAJMukes (such a great night for both), Kenan and Kristen were a blast; Troast stole this with another scene-stealing moment - use her more!

If it weren’t for JAJMukes, I wouldn’t be watching current SNL. JAJ has been a New Age Glue, with an upward trajectory & amazing run. Andrew…. Where do I even BEGIN with him?! Despite airtime struggles, he’s had a consistently fantastic tenure that’s been strong from the get-go.

Not the most outrageously funny concept ever, but a good, short-and-sweet parody of the usual celebrity attempts at activism. Very solid voiceover work from JAJ (in a night that really leaned on him for such), as well as quick funny moments with Bowen. Heidi looked amazing here.

JAJ closing out with the season with a silly, quick 10-to-1 felt like the perfect way to close out what’s been a quietly strong, impressive season for him. Both He & Andrew were such quiet backbones to this episode, as well as season, so it fits how both dominated & elevated it.

This is one of those sketches that only really works with a stellar, committed host, which what we thankfully have here. Add in solid straight man work by Andrew (ending an amazing season for him) and Chloe Troast, and you get a gem. Jake Gyllenhaal needs to become a Five-Timer.

Alway fun to see JAJMukes! After, to me, a mostly flat night, the JAJ-voiced (always solid) pretape prior to this and this 10-to-1 show just how vital he has become to the show with his utility strengths. Quietly held so much of this episode, and got to go silly for the end.

Already, Maya is showing the fun vibes she’ll bring. This is one of the better “host acts wacky” promos in some time, with a good & unexpected pairing of Andrew & Troast. Solid straight man work by the latter especially - showing her impressive range. Hope she gets a big night!

Maya being back is fun, as she has a warm presence and works well with the cast. As for Jake, I’m very excited, as he was a very strong, underrated host back in S47 (in a much-maligned episode) and is one I didn’t think will at all be back and host. Hope he works with JAJMukes!

I think I’m pretty done with Sarah Sherman. Not even 3 seasons into her tenure. Hurts me as champion of hers in her early run to see her be so creatively bankrupt now. How many times am I supposed to laugh at her “roasting” Colin? JAJ getting cut from Update for her feels wrong.

Reading about Seth’s band, I’m already mentally prepared for the eventual SNL cast cuts a la ‘06 from now. Just hope they do not make the moronic decision of cutting Chloe Troast from the show - she could eventually be an all-timer if they pivot towards her as a utility player.

Great having the show book a sketch comic as host! Ayo should be a natural as a host, due to her comedic experience and range. I expect her to be utilized very well and have a hosting debut in her own comedic voice, much like the stellar Nate Bargatze episode back in October.

What makes both cast members even better than they already are, is that you can tell how very sincere, honest they both are. The joy they carry by just performing & making the audience laugh. JAJ has been comforting each time he’s on and Andrew has been a real spark all along.

26 years since we last had Phil with us. Phil had it all: talent, range, likability, charisma, etc. But what truly made him the best was his inherent joy for performing & how he entered our hearts effortlessly - you felt he was your friend, without him ever pandering to you.

Ramy is a good, interesting pick. The kind of host this season could really utilize in a unique way. If Ramy is used well, and gets a show in his comedic voice, I can see this episode being one of the season’s major highs.

Ayo already coming off very comfortable and more of a cast member than a host in this short promo - hope it’s a sign of her blending effortlessly into the show comes Saturday. And, while I didn’t dislike the previous episode, I sincerely hope Ayo gets a solid-to-strong show.

The joy of Sarah Sherman radiates through even the most bizarre of premises. I loved this, yet another strong Sarah short and it truly tells a lot how a bizarre piece has Sarah shining so bright - what a unique spirit she’s been and what joy she brought in not over 3 seasons.

One of the season’s best. Perfect use of Kristen’s stellar delivery, oddball qualities and general likable presence; seeing such an GOAT sparring with Andrew, this cast’s secret weapon, was a delight; the terrifying, absurd end with Fort was a Best Of moment for the season.

I find it so wholesome how JAJ’s Dad routinely goes on here and consistently likes tweets that praise his son’s work on the show; that’s just adorable. He liked several of my tweets on him just this last episode, and I am sure others; he seems so proud of his kid.

Awesome we got three episodes back-to-back earlier in the season displaying JAJ’s great versatility in shorts: dramatic in The Right Track, musical in Lake Beach and over-the-top, fun sci-fi villain in Giant Horse.

Heh, I got the completely opposite opinion on Gillis from this episode. If anything, this episode is my favorite of the season right after the Bargatze one. I’ll leave it to my review to make my opinion clearer and why I loved this one as much as I (surprisingly) ended up being.

Joe Flaherty was one of a kind; one of the best to ever do it. Joe was many things I loved about sketch comics: solid impressionist, great character work, consummate professional, etc. Yet, the best thing about Joe, much like other GOATS, is that he made you feel you knew him.

That was such an underrated episode. This one and the Sandra Oh shows are, imho, some of the most overlooked shows from the past era. Game hosts and some fun, solid sketch concepts, especially in the latter.

Not bad, but besides the solid last two pieces, it had a lot of forgettable material, including a brutal Update edition. Dua was game, especially in pretapes and the 10-to-1. Sarah’s hit-or-miss year continues. Solid “Glue” night for JAJ. Shame about Troast getting shut out.

I actually liked it a lot - tons of offbeat, solid sketch concepts throughout the night. This is an episode, much like the monologue, that will either be seen as the best or worst thing ever. To me, it was neither, but I will save my full thoughts for the eventual review.

Shame about Punkie & Molly - Punkie started with a solid year the first half, which makes her underuse even more frustrating. Troast’s airtime is solid for a rookie, and so happy JAJMukes are used more and more as a backbone to the show, which is hopefully a sign for S50 & on!

Unpredictable year, with fantastic highs, and when it had its lows, as minimum as they were, pretty brutal. I am glad, however, it went well, as it is the first time an SNL season ended “normally” in years. Andrew & JAJ my MVP’s, as well as Kenan & Heidi providing solid support.

Now that she is being pushed by the show, it shows how limited her shtick can be. Of course, she had gems in S49, but the duds were more and some of them were AWFUL. Pure trash. Says a lot with JAJ’s airtime that he’s still strong. Hope he displays more fun impressions soon.

There’s such a strange aura around Andrew’s sketches and pretapes that have me so onboard with them - certain rawness, realness on the top of how very sincere a performer he is that make me love them & him even more. He is truly, alongside JAJ & Troast, the show’s secret weapon.

Lack of soul and chemistry in their work; show clearly now treats both as the lead females. Hell, Heidi’s airtime since S48 is higher than Aidy and Cecily in most of their runs, and now that Ego lost the trust after Lisa 2.0, it’s Heidi & Chloe as the female “stars” of the cast.

Had a dream that we got an Ego/Marcello sketch selling random products and JAJ had a part in it as a pitchman given tons of speedy, wordy dialogue which he delivered flawlessly with no flubs, which led to him getting audience applause afterwards. Proud of Dreamworld JAJ for that.

Dakota is a host that I feel would’ve fit perfectly during the early/late ‘80s SNL. But this current season could possibly give her a better utilization than her S40 episode, especially if she gets some solid pretaped material. No comment about the return of this specific MG.

I’m over the “cast member wears a goofy outfit” shtick especially when seeing it done by those who cannot nail them. Michael being so shut out for THIS trash feels wrong. Marcello only needs to put up a sign on him saying “Love Me” as it perfectly sums up his deep desperation.

I will say it, if it wasn’t for 1) having many that enjoy my site (and me still having energy to keep it going), 2) having JAJ Andrew and Troast as cast members and having mostly strong showings (with JAJ becoming such a backbone), I would’ve probably stopped watching last year.

A quietly solid finale, with two standout pieces (Cookie & 10-to-1); Jake’s a fantastic host as usual, and spreading the wealth was fun. JAJ’s strong year ends wonderfully with anchoring the beginning & end of the night. Scooby-Doo, Xeimu, SouthWest fine-but-derivative pieces.

JAJ reminds me of not only Phil, but Dan as well and other sketch comedy greats (Chris Guest, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy), as he has a classic approach to humor and versatility & professionalism, much like them. Troast reminds me of Nora/Jan and would kill as a 3rd Sweeney Sister.

I’m higher in general on this episode than you, but you did, per usual, a great job reviewing it while being fair and balanced; the monologue didn’t bother me much, as I explained why in my review & the writerly feel of the episode is why the show should book more stand-up hosts.

It was not a flawless season, but season 6 might be the best season period when it comes to musical guests - they even had a freakin’ Broadway cast performing for the Christmas episode! The S4-8 string of MG’s in general was top notch, though S6 might’ve been the best, overall.

Agreed re: her S40 show. Dakota is such an endearing, likable presence as a performer that I am a lot more hopeful for her this time, even when I still feel ‘80s SNL would better fit for her talents. Fingers crossed for showcases of her talents, as well as her natural likability.

One the reasons why I love JAJ is that he has me STRUCK by coming off like Phil Hartman (e.g. Go-Karts, gameshow sketches) and Dan Aykroyd (e.g. Giant Horse, The Looker), so seeing him getting such use makes me thrilled for the rest of his run! (Hoping 7-8 seasons with him.)
