RIP Richard Belzer. Belz was SNL's original warmup act before the show and at one time was considered for a spot in the cast. It never materialized but Richard can be found in the background of many an original era episode, did a standup spot and, in particular, this cold open.

R.I.P. Buck Henry. Buck hosted 10 times during the show’s first initial five years and was the kind of guy who could get accidentally sliced in the head by Belushi’s sword, finish the sketch by jumping out a windows and still carry on with the rest of the show. Truly incredible.

finishes out a surprisingly strong block of episodes with a STRONG Christmas outing. Butler was an outrageously committed host and the show seems to be finally figuring out its performance-driven chaos. Glorious send-off to Cecily. Best of the season. 4.5/5
