Being openly gay at school isn’t always easy. But it is important. Visibility matters. 🏳️🌈

After nearly 10 years as an openly gay teacher, this is the most important thing I have taught: to be proud of who you are — not how to expand brackets or solve equations! I hope meeting and knowing me will help them to appreciate and accept difference in others.

I remember clearly coming out to my form when they were in Yr 8. In a PSHE lesson on homophobia, I asked them to imagine how they’d feel if I were gay. Many said they’d think it was ‘gross’ for me to kiss a man, and similar things. Some said it wouldn’t matter.

Discovering someone they respected was gay challenged their outlook, and afterwards, those who‘d said negative things came up to me and apologised. Years later, they’re now in Yr13. I asked them if they remembered it and they told me how memorable it was for them.

Made a “hardest questions” video for students to help them reflect on what makes a Q tricky. I was surprised!

One asked if I was gay, and when I simply replied ‘yes’, there was a ripple of shock in the room - and then a sense they felt privileged I shared something personal with them. Many of them are from Muslim families, and likely don’t know any openly gay men.

I’ve been studying (for fun) at Birkbeck Uni for a Grad Dip in Maths (actually studied history at uni!), and have my Calc 3 exam tomorrow. ✍🏼 I’ve loved learning about dynamical systems and phase portraits. Nothing beats calculus for me 🙌🏼

How I use it: flipped learning - send video links to watch in advance of lesson, as well as matching PDF of slides for note taking (found in Google Drive here: ). Then use online lesson to cover practice Qs together (I use my visualiser to model)

I would highly recommend “How Not To Be Wrong” but Jordan Ellenberg - there are chapters on things like the normal distribution, regression, etc. It’s a lighthearted and informative read, full of real life applications + told in an enjoyable way. It made me really like stats! 📚

For forces I get students to ‘imagine’ they are one of the particles, and to think what it ‘feels’. They find it silly, but it really helps them understand which direction the forces are in; particularly tension, thrust, and connected particles. And helps with lift questions!

The recording software is free, called OBS - it’s v popular, so there’s lots of guides online. At school, I record live on ActiveInspire, but now I record in Chrome using the Kami extension - it essentially is an annotation app. Happy to help, so let me know if you need anything!

I’m surprised a vector isn’t an acceptable answer, but I suppose I’d explain to students that the language of the question is speed and direction (given that the velocities are originally defined in this way). Sneaky question that should have clarification written in the wording!

Benefits: students tell me they prefer to watch videos for content in advance and use online lesson to be ‘coached’ through their practice. They like that they can pause and rewind, too, and YouTube doesn’t rely on stable connections for steaming unlike Meet/Zoom/Teams

And for connected particles... my lanyard with keys on is great, students have them too. It helps them understand the reaction forces on the pulley (usually their wrists). For moments, a metre ruler held out on my two hands helps explain tilting points and reaction forces too.

Agreed - the textbook is especially weak on invariant lines, and I can think of several exam questions where it is assessed beyond the Pearson exercises. Good to know Integral has more on this.

I’ve also only seen it on a secure mock. I think in the same one that had induction with recurrence - Edexcel said this was possible to come up too after emailing, so makes me think invariant under any 2x2 matrix is possible...?

I have software to screen record (OBS Studio). It doesn’t matter what interactive whiteboard you use, it just captures your screen. I have a clip-on wireless mic so can still move around class. A game changer for my teaching- revision tool, catching students up when absent etc.😊
