Somewhat overwhelmed by the response to this. 🥹 Thank you for all the kind messages. I really love Croydon - I’m extremely excited to get stuck into running the CLP for a very marginal seat, especially as we head into an election
Understand that Andrew Fisher, the architect of Jeremy Corbyn’s 2017 manifesto, was replaced as the chair of Croydon CLP tonight by Rosie Beacon, who works at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.
Trying not to scream every time I see Selena Gomez’s Instagram story… Enormously successful make up brand (obsessed) funding more mental health innovation (obsessed) with TBI (obsessed)

Some personal news - after four unforgettable, hilarious years, the next few weeks will be my last at the Tony Blair Institute. I will soon be starting at
@reformthinktank
to focus on the small topic of NHS reform which I am extremely excited about
I so often hear ‘new Labour (& Tony Blair) was just a closet right wing project’. This is indisputably one of the laziest political observations going, yet one I hear at pretty much every political event. It’s not even a matter of being defensive it’s just bad & boring commentary
26 years ago today the last Labour government was first elected to office.
A mammoth list of positive achievements.
Never forget that politics is all about choices - and if politics isn't delivering the right solutions, you're electing the wrong politicians

We are currently planning our party conference events. It has emerged to us today that to have 1 x 750ml bottle of water at a Labour conf event is £7.50 *each*.
What the HELL justifies £7.50 on a bottle of water??? Did Jesus make it??? What is this financial racket????
I wish I could adequately express just HOW fed up I am of reading accounts of how terrible pretty much all of our basic, fundamental public services are. So tired of a politics that just seems to consist of empty, useless platitudes about economic growth and nothing more
This morning's thread is about HMP Woodhill, a high security prison based near Milton Keynes. You may well find this distressing. I find it extremely distressing.
The rumours are indeed true. Today is my first day at
@reformthinktank
! I am forward to getting stuck into health policy 💭 📚🏥
On that note please reach out if you want to grab a coffee to discuss health reform I am all ears!
The whole 'Kwasi Kwarteng has a PhD from Cambridge so must be a genius' thing has shone a light on an eternal problem in politics - credentialism. It is despairingly superficial. I know tonnes of textbook intelligent people that would quite frankly be terrible PMs or chancellors
One of the best things about working in Westminster is my daily lunchtime walk around St James’s to see my pelican friends, who I often take several photos of and then never look at again
Got to admire Euston station for somehow, inexplicably, making the station worse in its refurbishment. What kind of sadist decided to take away all the shops - I.e. the ONE thing that could somewhat help detract from the mind numbing purgatory of staring at the platform screens
Please save me from more of these headlines. HOW do people still think that health prevention is a novel & news-worthy idea?
This has been said for at least 25 years, probably more. Nothing has changed. Exploring why it has NOT happened is the defining policy question
OMG HOW MANY TIMES BURGLARY HAS REDUCED SUBSTANTIALLY ACROSS ALL DEVELOPED NATIONS IRRESPECTIVE OF APPROACHES TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE BECAUSE OF IMPROVED HOME AND CAR SECURITY NOT PUBLIC POLICY.
IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF POLITICIANS. IT'S BECAUSE OF SECURITY CAMERAS AND ELECTRIC CAR KEYS
One of the surreal things about working at
@InstituteGC
is that I see things like this on the news and then remember a few hours before he was on an all staff call giving us similar insights and more. GFA is always a nice reminder that politics done well can make things better 😊
"Tonight is not a night for soundbites - and fortunately the hand of history is firmly on someone else's shoulder."
Former PM Tony Blair marks the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, referencing a speech he gave when it was agreed in 1998.
Live:
The three major news stories atm- Boris Johnson, Prince Andrew & Djokovic- all encapsulate one theme: a genuine sense of exceptionalism. They sincerely believe they are different & they can get away with it. Safe to say, I'm thoroughly enjoying all of them being disproved on this
I will never understand why most people are not hungry for lunch at 12pm on the dot. I literally start thinking about lunch from the moment I finish my breakfast, at 7.31am. If I ever eat after 12.30pm it’s because circumstances have backed me into a horrible starving corner
I spent two hours last night trying to work out what photos to put on the wall, and I still can’t choose one out of these four photos of sheer and utter perfection. Are we going for a, b, c or d…
I would also really like to impress how much of a party’s success is down to an ARMY of well intentioned volunteers doing it for little to no recognition. Everyone thinks activism is full of ambitious wannabe MPs with their own motivations, but it’s not. This is their win too
Woken up with my timeline full of ‘Labour gain’ and my heart is so full!! What a night and what a moment, huge well done to all

I wish I could express how allergic I am to politicians who never stop talking about the nanny state. Immediate sign that they are driven primarily by ideology rather than evidence.
Remember this name, it’s Mhairi Fraser. She’s the Tory candidate in Epsom and Ewell. If she wins her seat she’ll be a big force in a (probably) opposition Conservative Party.
She’s currently attacking the Nanny state, Sunak’s proposed smoking ban, and lockdowns.

If there is a hill I will die on it is the need for universal political education and I'm going to explain exactly why in 5 tweets (well 6 including this one) 1/6
This story is punctuated with lots of details that reflect some, not all, but definitely some of our political culture.
Self-importance (arriving an hour late), mediocrity ('not a fruitful discussion'), arrogance (feet on chair), entitlement (groping) 1/2
Happy Christmas from the Beacon household! Thinking of those who are working and/or find Christmas especially difficult, so please enjoy our absolutely deranged Christmas tree that definitely looked smaller in the shop
'The party won't even do the bare minimum to improve people's lives' says man who emphatically endorsed a Labour party that produced literally the smallest improvement in peoples' lives for generations
One thing I feel has slipped under the radar this last week is that North East devolution was a not insignificant failure under new Labour in 2004. Why is regional devolution so much more acceptable now? Is it the execution, or change in the political winds, or something else
Interestingly
@jo3hill

We need challenge the assumption that abuse of female politicians on social media is just how things work now, that it’s an honour to be an MP & unrelenting abuse is just part of the job. Aside from being unpleasant & unfair, it could be deeply damaging for female representation
OPINION | Just because we have more women in Parliament than we once did, it doesn't mean they'll stay. We need to combat online and in person abuse to convince young girls that public life is a career path worth taking, writes
@BeaconRosie
There are lots of people in politics I feel very fortunate to have worked with - thoughtful, supportive, both interesting & interested. Sascha is NOT one of those people. She has no idea what she’s talking about. A devastating gain for Politico

Do all parents wake up ridiculously early? I can come downstairs and my dad will make a joke about cancelling my impending funeral (because I’ve apparently been asleep so long) like ‘cancel the wreaths Sarah!!!’ And I’m like dad, it’s literally 10 past 7 in the morning
*brilliant* read. I have always viewed imposter syndrome as a double edged sword - while it is clearly symbolic of insecurity, it also forces people to be intensely self aware.
I.e. the opposite of the incompetency and complacency so obvious among over confident people.
This has always seemed the most logical and obvious thing in the world to me. But it consistently surprises me how it is definitely not the norm in politics to think this way.
Delighted to be talking to

2006. Tony Blair delivers final conference speech as PM in Manchester.
He accuses Cameron of "sacrificing British influence for party expediency" on Europe.
He tells Labour that if "we can't take this lot apart" they shouldn't be in the business of politics at all.
A hill I will die on: the casual use of Latin in journalism & politics is elitist, annoying & self indulgent. Editors should go out of their way to ensure it’s not included in work supposedly intended for mass audiences. Maybe I’m a Philistine, or maybe I went to a state school
I actually think pharmacies have been chronically underused and this scheme - while imperfect - is indisputably an improvement on before. Patients with long term conditions use 50% of a GP's capacity when they could easily be seen elsewhere, it's an absurd way to run a system
I went to the Pharmacist witj what I suspected was early shingles and he told me emphatically it was *not*. (Spoiler - it was).
He also told me not to go to the NHS for 2nd opinion, but tried to sell me a private Superdrug online GP appointment.
Clear strategy starting to emerge here...
Government can't afford major public service reform over the next 2 years, so commissioning a tonne of reviews/taskforces to report back just as the economy starts to grow. Shows the time wasn't wasted, but still gives some wiggle room
I resonate with this VERY deeply. I get asked all the time if I want to be an MP. I'll always deviate because I worry people think I'd be doing it for the glory/honour/vanity rather than a genuine passion for a particular policy area, liking the job of an MP, enjoying leadership
Recently a journalist called and asked me if I was trying to become an MP. I fudged an answer.
So I've written for
@CityAM
this week on the curious British squeamishness around running for office, why it makes our politics worse, and how to fix it
I have thoroughly enjoyed my reading week at work but one reflection: I am concerned my needy and attention seeking dog will simply never forgive me for going back to my desk full time where he cannot so frequently jump on my lap and show me his toys 🥲🥺
I loved working with Ryan. Caring, curious, thoughtful. He would truly be a credit to the next Labour government. Someone more proud of their Liverpudlian heritage you just cannot find - Knowsley Labour members you should know what to do ✔️

I believe Tony Blair continues to cut to the core of the big policy questions in a way other politicians struggle to. And so I highly recommend tuning in if you value sensible and logical analysis of problems and radical solutions to these very problems
Britain is living through three revolutionary changes: Brexit, the technology revolution and the Net Zero ambition.
We need a radical shift in both policy and government to meet these head on.
Watch Tony Blair's speech.
Has the National Conservatism conference always existed? This week is the first I’ve heard of it and - I cannot emphasise this enough - I never want to hear about it ever again
We argue in the report that NHS funding should be spent on non NHS services, if they improve population health overall.
This could include anything from housing to green spaces - listen below ⬇️
"You need to create healthy people rather than just responding to sickness"

making the case for devolving the NHS budget to local areas and letting them decide how to spend it... which might mean eg fixing black mould in social housing 👏
Truly not a day goes by where I don’t sit and reflect how much more fantastic life would be if toasters had a little button that says ‘just 30 more seconds’
One of my favourite things about going to other countries is going on their trains. Lame but when they are good they are seriously good. Picturesque routes, clean, and DOUBLE DECKER?!?! The holy trinity of public transport truly
I know in Westminster this may not be breaking news but on the whole in London, St James’s Park is criminally underrated. And, if the pleasant greenery may not entice you, the ducklings and pelicans (!!😮) bloody well should!!!
An elegant speech from

I really think the mindblowing growth in 12 hour A&E waiting times is underappreciated.
Q1 2015 12 hour waits: 987
Q1 2024 12 hour waits: 141,693
You would have to multiply 2015 numbers by ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-THREE to get to 2024
UKG FRAUD STRATEGY- There are some good initiatives but they are disparate & the system doesn't add up to the sum of its parts.
We have a policing model from 1974 for the crimes of 2023, fraud is a classic example of where it doesn't work and this strategy doesn't fix that.🧵1/
Very exciting new report today as covered in
@thetimes
If we were to design a health system today, a standardised model for a highly unstandardised population would barely seem logical, let alone efficient.
It should be a matter for regional governments, not NHS England.
NEW REPORT OUT TODAY 🚨
‘Close enough to care: A new structure for the English health and care system’ as covered in

We propose pooling and devolving the NHS budget to regional mayors, and in turn, abolishing NHS England. 🧵

I enjoyed the conferences but they did make me reflect… politics needs to be more professional. What’s one thing you would introduce to make politics less insane..?
I am almost certain most people in politics need access to free and high quality therapy.
Love the decisiveness & authority of this. I don’t think many politicians can successfully traverse the ‘two things can be true at once’ framing well at all, but when they can, they are far more effective communicators. GPs are under pressure. Patients deserve a better service.
If you are feeling sad about C*v*d ruining your Christmas, please find joy in my collection of the ugliest baubles ever. There are some truly horrible ones out there. Nothing says Christmas more than a bejewelled hammerhead shark ❤️

Never understood the British media's outsized obsession with policy u-turns. If there is such a public outcry for a policy, they should reverse it. This culture clearly incentivises politicians to keep bad policies - this culture is just so obviously not in the public interest?

It feels like an enormous oversight to me that the 20,000 new police officers line is everywhere but with no accompanying promise of rigorous recruitment practices? Targets like this can just incentivise police forces to rush through recruitment to get more ‘bobbies on the beat’
I have noticed that everyone laments the absence of a guiding, compelling vision in our politics but very few are willing to outline what this should look like. In this vein I'm delighted that tomorrow

This is genuinely hilarious. Did they hire a 5 year old to do these calculations? Even if you agree with Reform’s values there is no getting away from the fact they simply do not have the party infrastructure to be fit for office, like for example, the ability to add 2+2
