. The males can't feed with an egg on their feet, which takes 65-75 days to hatch. When chicks appear in July, their fathers have fasted for 4 mths and lost nearly 1/2 their weight.

Field biologists recently spotted this curious pup and its mother hauled out on the ice near Davis research station and enjoying the sunshine. Our records show that the mother was tagged at Davis, as a pup back in 1987, making her 31 years young!
