The way in which Sir Philip Rutnam has quit simply confirms all the "briefings" from last 2 weeks.
He didn't like the new regime, didn't like the new Home Secretary, and didn't like that he wasn't getting his way. His job was to do what Priti Patel wanted - it's right he's gone.

I would like to congratulate
@theresa_may

I thought we’d lose about a thousand seats, but no, that wasn’t good enough for her - we lost 1334 hard working Conservative councillors.
All because the PM won’t admit it’s time to go.
Really disappointed to see

supporting the Police in fining people for not following the *guidance* rather than only where the law is broken.
We have the rule of law in the UK and western democracies for a reason! Very easy to quickly lose public support here.

On Tuesday night
@theresa_may
betrayed her party, manifesto & voters with her No Deal motion.
On Wednesday, chaos as Parliament betrayed the People, damaging our democracy.
No idea what happens next, but clear I (& many others) can’t support the Conservatives with May as leader
It is almost certain that

@AldersgateGrp
A terrible, uncosted at the time (and later confirmed to be ridiculously expensive) decision that in future decades we will come to regret - in terms of the costs to jobs, our wealth, and quality of life. I'm afraid it's an even worse legacy than the draft Brexit deal you left.
Conservative MP
@RishiSunak
took a photo with a bag of tea you can buy in the shops. Brand said they weren't involved. The left go crazy & demand a boycott.
Corbyn did the same in 2017. Anyone remember calls for a boycott then?
How sad & intolerant.
Well, I fear tonight is the end of Theresa May, the current government, and quite possibly the Party.
Every Labour vote will cost a Tory vote - so it'll be a red Brexit with blue PM. DUP have essentially been dropped (so who's keeping us in power). And party members are furious!
Incredibly proud of the UK 🇬🇧silent majority who ensured the UK public vote 12 points went to Israel 🇮🇱.

No, JKR is pro-woman, pro-LGB. She understands the difference between sex and gender, ensuring my homosexuality isn’t erased by TQ+ activists like yourself,
She also understands the difference between fiction and fantasy, and fact & science. And thank goodness she does.

Given how politically charged the debate is around TQ+ at the moment, and some charities in that space have active safeguarding investigations, it’s hardly surprising.
The Crown also risks upsetting many homosexuals, like me, if they were to do anything to support the medical
No, Nick. The majority - women, 51% of UK population - are the ones under attack. Their rights, spaces & sports are at risk.

Some encouraging figures - including that two-thirds want to see the license fee substantially reformed or scrapped. Boris is clearly on to a winner if he does decide to take action.
Sadly, this is true. Too many in the Conservative Party are standing against the change that voters put us in power to deliver. Until that changes, it’s no surprise voters won’t trust us to deliver.
The Conservatives are heading for defeat because they're completely out of touch with the people who put them in power. My latest in tomorrow's

Yet often those same leftwingers would happily see someone on the right barred and tarred for life if the wrong pronoun is used.

One of May’s last acts was to pass legislation putting net zero targets into law.
The same net zero that will see UK citizens be unable to afford their energy bills, and in the worst cases, sadly starve or freeze to death this winter.
That legacy is quite something.
It is very clear with

at the head of the EU the Northern Ireland Protocol can never be resolved. It is beyond time to walk away.
An utterly ridiculous & false statement - perhaps she should reflect first on her own country's recent history...
At some point in the future a government minister will have to tell the people: "We can't do that because of EU rules".
And at that point the British public will ask a very simple question "I thought we left?!". It will break our democracy and I daren't predict the outcome.
@IainDale
I don’t agree with the speech, but it seems to be an attack on individuals who deny biology and want to destroy single sex spaces and sports. I don’t see it as an attack on LGBT more widely.
And I also think it’s quite legitimate to complain that as a government minister, the

Speaking as a member of the LGB community - No.
Devolved administrations have no right to change the meaning and effect of Westminster legislation and areas that are reserved to Westminster. This is a basic part and fact of our democracy.

I fear the future is now the same as Canada’s Conservative party - the decline becomes more irreversible as every day of inaction passes.
Another brilliant

article. The EU has rebuffed us again, so now time for some British backbone. With polls showing 2/3rds of us think the EU has acted like a bully, giving in would be a terrible mistake.
How far back would we need to go to find another time when so many prominent Conservatives have written so many damning articles about the Party & Leader?
MPs need to take the hint and get May out of Number 10, before the rot is irreversible.

@OwenJones84
It’s quite possibly the last charity for our community left standing that still defines homosexuality (correctly, the hint is in how the word is spelt) as same-sex, not same-gender, attraction.
It is only a small loud faction that equates that with being anti-trans. It isn’t.

Given all the journalists so far have failed to ask anything intelligent and just repeatedly ask the same already answered questions, this is hardly a loss.
It is one thing to express these views in private events for Conservative party members.
It is quite another to go on national TV, harm the UK negotiating position, and contradict the very manifesto you stood on and were elected on a year ago.

The taxpayer owns approximately 39% of NatWest, a legacy from when Gordon Brown bailed them out during the financial crash (they were called RBS then).

Easy solution, Simon - tell your EU mates in France to stop them crossing to the UK. Then they won’t be able to cross over to Ireland.

We should instead tear up the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and the billions of euros the EU wanted - killing British citizens is nothing short of an act of war.
