I am dismayed that
@BPSOfficial
a professional body which holds human welfare as a core value, seems unable as an organisation to make a statement joining the growing calls of many others for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds in Gaza (1/5)
I have been impacted by
@Lowkey0nline
’s music since the mid 2000s: amidst the violence of silence his lyrics make space for so many living through oppression. He’s there holding umbrellas for others at rainy solidarity events (1/2)
I am beyond delighted to say I have just accepted a Consultant Clinical Psychology Post with Oxford Health NHS FT (Lead for Urgent Care Pathway Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team). Don't ever think you are too old for a new challenge
A few people have asked about copies of the presentation
@SumanFernando
@rogerkline
and myself delivered earlier on this year at the DCP Annual Conference 'Addressing Systemic Racism in Clinical Psychology:A Call to Action' Now available:
In the light of continued position of silence with regards to a call for a ceasefire in Gaza,it is with a very heavy heart I have today issued my formal resignation as co-chair of
@BPSOfficial
Human Rights Advisory Group and as a member of
@BPSOfficial
EDI Board (4/5)
We are now as an organisation distinguished by our lack of a position on a ceasefire from the
@WHO
, 18 UN agencies multiple non-profits, unions such as
@unisontheunion
other healthcare agencies,
@TheBMA
who have all been clear about supporting an urgent ceasefire ( 2/5)
Meaningful EDI and human rights work necessarily requires trust in our commitment from our broader communities, a trust that will be damaged by our silence when it matters most (3/5)
This decision in no way changes my feelings towards the many hard working and dedicated people working across
@BPSOfficial
including some brilliant colleagues from HRAG, the EDI Board and EDI Team including
@ShakibaMoghadam
and
@DrAdamJowett
(5/5)
Please share this post with other psychologists with professional links to Palestine and any others who would like to support our colleagues in both Gaza and the West Bank facing tremendous challenges in their work right now

It was a pleasure to see the growing mobilisation of psychologists, psychotherapists and fellow health care professionals out in force today marching in solidarity with the Palestinians and a message anyone who believes in universal humans rights is supporting
#CeasefireNow
‘Progressive except for Palestine’ really does beg the question about how serious we can take any commitment to anti-racism and human rights. It exposes how deeply ingrained coloniality is within our profession and problems we see with naming apartheid and illegal occupation
He shares the stage with fans and thanks the cleaners at his gigs. He wrote the definitive anthem for the bereaved and survivors of Grenfell. A talented artist, historian and activist : solidarity from Birmingham (2/2)
Today estimates of over 500,000 people stood in solidarity with the universal and unalienable human rights of people in Gaza.

One of the biggest protests in British history is happening right now in the streets of London for Gaza, for Palestine, despite the smears and threats 🇵🇸
Magnificent!
Some politicians continue to argue that it is 'not the time' for a ceasefire in

, even with thousands dead.
So here's a thread of major organisations, statespersons and other notables showing leadership and calling for a

This is ridiculous. Come on
@UKDCP
and
@BPSOfficial
we can do better than this. Are we serious about change and encouraging people from less privileged backgrounds to join the profession or not?
So 34 yrs on since starting out as a volunteer at All Saints Hospital, 9 yrs in nursing, 24 yrs in clinical psychology culminating in the last couple of yrs with Oxford Health supporting the development of CRHT and Urgent Care services, it's time pass the baton on... (1/4)

‘We need to acknowledge traumas stemming from bombs and persecution (in various shapes and forms), which lead to people losing loved ones, fleeing homes, the lives they have built and the dangerous journeys they take to safety.’
We need to acknowledge trauma.
Displaced people deserve compassion and support for their traumas just like anyone else.
Some may say that we shouldn't treat people seeking safety with love and acceptance, but this couldn't be further from the truth.

about workforce race inequality. The degree to which this has not been addressed in Clinical Psychology in the NHS concerns me. The problem will not be rectified bottom up although important to address. Our gaze needs to be higher up the food chain.

A really great book launch of 'Applied Psychology and Allied Professions Working with Ethnic Minorities' and an inspiring panel discussion hosted by

organised by

Events like this make you feel there is hope in moving the dial forward
And those that make it through to leadership positions and are serious about change are often very poorly supported, deeply undermined and need special superhuman qualities to survive.

Glad to see this happening. We need total commitment to change and acknowledgement not enough has been done to address the systematic and institutional racism embedded within our own profession. I speak as a member of the BPS and former Regional Chair of West Midlands DCP
This is a truly outstanding achievement

As a grandson of Armenian Genocide Survivors from Istanbul (then Constantinople) the run up to April 24th, Armenian Memorial Day, is never easy. Arshile Gorky is with me today.
For our NHS to thrive we need recruitment practices that are inclusive and fair. That way we get to access talent from a broader range of people who better represent all of our communities. It is about ending a culture that replicates systemic bias and is how we will excel 1/3
This is for anyone feeling isolated or overwhelmed with progressing change through their EDI work. Sometimes you are making more of a difference than you realise and sometimes just speaking up and out helps others know they are not alone.

We really do need to start scrutinizing Psychology leadership in the NHS too.... How many minority ethnic Chief Psychologists are out there for example and what superhuman qualities are required for them to survive if they dare to ask the difficult questions?
"Just 8 of 231 NHS trusts are led by minority ethnic CEOs .How can the NHS possibly deliver its ambition to reduce health inequalities if the organisation itself fails to deliver equality internally for the people it employs?"

The book begins with the case of a Muslim man who sought the help of a psychologist to hold the police accountable.

Another day. Another Woman of Black and Minority Ethnic heritage who got halfway to her career goals now being targeted. I had to advise her that in THAT organisation she she should plan to leave not fight as she would lose. What an unjust waste.
More and more people are getting excited that change is coming. There are a mountain of problems to fix but it starts with inclusive non divisive leadership and much better governance. We need to restore confidence from the membership, start winning people back to
