Aerospace engineering curriculum: your assignment is to design a drone to locate missing hikers and deliver a payload of medical supplies
The missing hikers:
My toxic engineering trait is that when FEA says my thing is gonna break it’s because I’m bad at FEA and garbage in is garbage out. When it tells me it’ll be fine? Yeah I already knew that
I graduated 3 months ago and honestly I can’t believe I used to be able to take the integral of anything that wasn’t a polynomial. If someone asked me to do that right now I’d probably hit them with my car
I realized I shouldn’t feel bad about my 2.65 aerospace engineering GPA when I realized I had classmates that graduated with a 3.8-4.0 without knowing what “machining” meant or what a servo motor or microcontroller was
Anyone working on any cool projects that could use a free contributor or idea bouncer? I’m starting to get bored at home waiting for my start date. AE degree, decent at design, manufacturing, rocketry, CAD, building doohickeys, ITAR violations, etc
If you want to see who your real friends are, be unemployed for a few months. You’ll see who will day drink and take a 5 hour lunch break to play mini golf with you, and who will just say you need “help” and put their shitty job first. It’s eye opening in the most disgusting way
@j_nellissery
Definitely a lot of “first principles” questions relating to fluid dynamics, structures, thermodynamics, etc. For the later technical questions expect to be tested on some terminology and engineering theories more closely related to the position itself. On-site interview was a
Hey everyone, I made an engineering Discord server for people to share expertise, form groups, and have more real-time discussion and collaboration on engineering and project stuff than you can on here. All types of engineers and hobbyists welcome!

Alright fellas any suggestions on how to best learn actual *practical* GD&T? I don’t know how much further this approach can take me. Like how am I supposed to know how precise a hole spacing needs to be? The stupid nutplate just needs to fit is that so hard??
Why do I have the urge to start a steelmaking company, I don’t know anything about steel. I want to use the steel to build cargo ships, aircraft carriers, and oppressively large megastructure projects, which I also don’t know anything about
@notwhatyoupaid4
I noticed in a bunch of my job interviews the only space companies that ended the conversation after learning my GPA were older companies like Boeing or Northrop. SpaceX/Blue/Relativity either didn’t ask or didn’t care. Might explain a lot lol
I designed and printed a 7 cigarette version for my (now deceased) friend a few years ago, looks like I’ve finally been defeated… for now. Big things going on behind the scenes though 👀
Trying to mess around with Rust on ESP32 but I can’t because my project path is longer than 10 characters. My monitor’s refresh rate isn’t a prime number. The moon’s phase isn’t compatible with cargo. I’m not wearing thigh high socks. Dependency conflict with my computer case
How trivial is BLDC design? can i just glue a bunch of arbitrarily designed wire EDM'd electrical steel stator laminations together, wrap some copper wire around it in the right pattern, glue some magnets to the inside of the housing, and hook up an ESC? or is there a lot of
I’ve always liked the idea of 100% US-made (US electrical steel, copper, bearings, etc.) BLDC motors in the same price/quality range as DJI. Let’s see what happens when someone that knows nothing about motors but has some experience in manufacturing and automation gives it a shot

Half of global power consumption in 10 years is just going to be ChatGPT wrappers making phone calls to other ChatGPT wrappers facilitating doordash deliveries so the enlightened people of America can spend more time hitting their 80% thc pen and jerking it to VR overwatch porn
When walking on rough terrain does anyone else pretend they’re a Boston Dynamics robot using depth sensing and machine vision to calculate optimal foot placements and body movements to maximize stability
I don’t get why anyone is defending the guy who built the mailbox. Making a mistake while driving shouldn’t be a death sentence, nearly all infrastructure is based on this. Building it instead of petitioning the city for better signage or a redesigned road section is petty vanity
An Ohio man who built a virtually indestructible mailbox because he was sick of people smashing it is being sued by a motorist who crashed into the thing and got paralyzed, according to a report.
@servomechanica
the classic "I decided to not transition my student position to a full-time position because I thought I was moving to LA in 3 weeks" blunder will go down in history
when your friend texts and says "i need you to print a few things for me ASAP, emailing it to you in a sec" so you turn on all 3 of your printers, load filament, preheat them, open the slicer, then he sends you a pdf
@AStarryDawn
I hate that I spent my entire undergrad using CATIAv5/3DE CATIA daily for projects and work just to learn it’s hated almost universally outside of my company and like 5 others lol. Wish I spent that time learning NX
Question for NX users: How would you do this quickly? Creating a plane that is normal to this hole, but also 1mm below the lowest point of the hole's perimeter on a surface? I couldn't find a way to do it in NX without having to make several planes and sketches as a roundabout
“It only has to work once”
- me improvising something that will in fact not work even once and will lead to the irrecoverable loss of whatever it is I’m working on plus half the metropolitan area
@tenshi_1997
@GoddenThomas
Literally, people dunking on this is what made me aware of Pinecil, bought one yesterday. Probably would’ve shelled out the $80 for the iFixIt for the aesthetics and brand if it had on-device temp controls
@Z4chOnEarth
Bambu A1/Bambu A1 Mini are the go-tos these days for cheap, no frills printing. Bambu Studio is the software you’ll probably use to actually do the print settings and slicing, but for designing parts I would recommend Fusion 360 or OnShape
I thought I finally got addicted to the gym but it turns out I just got addicted to all the caffeine in the random energy drinks I would always have before the gym 😰
@andrewmccalip
One time I submit an info request for one of their profile scanners and started looking at a bunch of their other products out of boredom. Salesman calls me later and says “I see you were looking at our optical comparators as well, is there anything I can help you with on that?”
The F-15 can hit Mach 2.49
This means the F-15 can basically hit Mach 2.5
This means the F-15 can basically hit Mach 3
This means the F-15 can basically hit Mach 5
This means the F-15 is a hypersonic interceptor
@AveryTrashmouth
Mistakes and mechanical failures happen and the punishment should not be paralyzation or death. Would you feel different about this guy’s mailbox if the vehicle had a mechanical failure that caused loss of control and it hit the mailbox and paralyzed the driver?
Especially since me and some buddies are looking into forming a startup, we’ve noticed that any commercial grade CAD/PLM platforms are either prohibitively expensive, or have a predatory pricing model targeting startups. Trying to convince them to be patient with FreeCAD lol
@jimbelosic
What do you look for most when speccing out new machines? Cost? Long term manufacturer support? Minimizing man hours required to operate? Whatever current employees already know how to use? Whatever is easiest to interface with and integrate into your management system? Etc.
