The eve of Austerlitz... there was no moon that night, thick fog made movement difficult. Around midnight Prince Peter Volkonskii summoned Allied column commanders to the council of war, held in the large drawing room of a local nobleman’s house, where headquarters was set up.

Just one example of inaccuracies to expect from #Napoleon movie. Last scene in the trailer reflects a persistent myth, originating with Napoleon, that numerous Allied troops rushed onto the ice-covered lakes that then engulfed many of them as the result of French bombardment.

@Napoleonic_Era Sure, a few strong points - the pageantry of the Napoleonic uniforms is there, and Phoenix occasionally delivers as Napoleon - but the rest... you just need to see it... Wellington asking if he could sit down in Napoleon's presence while meeting him on a British warship...

Volume one of new edition of Napoleon's Correspondence is now online. It covers 1784-1797 and contains some 2,500 letters. In 2023, the totality of the correspondence - over 40,000 letters - will be put online. Kudos @FondaNapoleon !

Instead of cramming Napoleon's turbulent life into one film, Scott should have considered a more focused approach, reminiscent of his wonderful The Duellists (1977). Balzac's "Adieu", which i briefly discuss here, might have been a perfect a foil for it.

Most depressing batch of military docs one can get, page after page of regimental, divisional, and corps reports with staggering losses... the report on the hospitalized soldiers is stunning, both for the numbers (268,817 in late fall of 1813) and the sheer physical size of it.

A fantastic view onto the city of Jena. During the night of October 14, 1806, the French troops climbed the slopes of these hills to seize the high ground. It was quite a feat, given the difficulty of transporting cannon across this broken terrain.

But the Persian envoy found a solution - he insisted on specifying in the preamble of the treaty that he was “the Lord of the Dagger set in jewels, Lord of the Sword adorned with gems, and the Lord of the Shawl Coat, already worn.” :)

1692 men (1439 present) of the 3rd Portuguese Infantry Regiment marching across Europe on their way to the Nieman River... six months later, most of them would be gone... by June 1813, just 19 officers and 94 men (with 62 horses) would be present in ranks...

Military losses alone cannot adequately convey the significance of the French triumph at Austerlitz. The Third Coalition was effectively destroyed, and so was the allies’ will to continue the war.

Dozens of senior officers killed, wounded, or captured; some disappeared, only to reappear after the battle. Buxhöwden, with his hat missing and clothes in disorder, was seen among the retreating men, shouting forlornly, “They have abandoned me! They have sacrificed me!"

Here gathered Kutuzov, Weyrother, and all but one of the column commanders - Bagration sent word that he could not arrive in time. Kutuzov welcomed the officers and curtly told them that they would attack the current enemy positions at 7 a.m. the next morning.

He asked for some wine to warm/fortify the czar with. To his utter surprise, he was told that as the kaiser was asleep, the members of his household could not take upon themselves to dispose of his stores. Wylie “begged on his knees,” but it was all for naught. No wine for czar.

The news of the battle caused a genuine shock in Russia. It "has paralyzed the entire empire,” wrotede Maistre in a letter to a friend. After Austerlitz everything seemed lost; “it looked like the result of some kind of magic or witchcraft... I cannot find words to describe it."

It was the Austrians, after all, who had sketched the plan of battle that was fought on terrain that they supposedly knew so well. They had wholly failed in the delivery of supplies, forage, and ammunition.
