if manga artists who draw in black and white with multiple assistants releasing a single chapter monthly still have health issues what do you think that means for webcomic artists who draw full colored fully rendered 60 panel episodes that release weekly
this is just really sad. he has basically lost all sense of personhood because he allowed content creation to consume his entire life, to the point of no longer having a personality or hobbies
my suggestion to OC artists is to hire voice actors for your OCs. like. the money that you would normally spend on a drawn commission. have you ever considered using it for a VOICE commission. it is seriously a whole other experience !!!
Hayao Miyazaki has begun developing his next film.
“He thinks about this new project every day, I can no longer stop him,” says Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki.

everyone citing the coke and not realizing that some editor out there really read this, thought "eh, this is fine," and then just let it publish to print
new webcomic artists will hear the advice to just get started regardless of your art skill, and then become discouraged and hurt when their work isn't performing as well as artists who have stronger visual skills
here's how you can succeed in webcomics without the best art:
I also had this exact experience with rev - my commission was uploaded onto twitter without any notification to me, I found out from a friend who DM'd me the post and had to ask rev myself for the final comm file.
my comm was placed Dec 2021 and I received it Feb 2023
A $450 commission placed in Jan 2022.
I was never notified my comm was finished. I only found out when a friend sent this tweet to me.
I never approved the final art and a month later, I still haven't received the art I paid for.
rev is not answering my DM or emails.
oh boy it's fun learning that mastodon DMs are not private nor e2e encrypted, they're totally accessible to the server owner. it's a little different than when corps have your DMs because they usually only go through DMs if they get a subpoena. but a server owner? it's all theirs
did you know that if your comic series spans 4+ years there's probably teenagers out there who are gonna grow up with it. like it's gonna be a part of their teen memories for the rest of their life
threads is going wild with this news - instagram is now detecting if someone's reposted your content and will auto-redirect their upload to yours instead. huge win for creators who often get their work stolen and reposted, now that reposter's reach is converted to yours!
someone asked about this recently wrt all the characters in my indigenous asian comic wearing their shirt collars the "wrong" way, but actually, it's just cause we're different!
just a random thing from

and hc being hmong, you know that poison-sucking scene? this probably wasn't intentional, but there's actually a whole THING in hmong about drinking blood from someone's hand- it's a ritual between lovers to bind their souls together FOREVER
unironically though I miss the early 2000s deviantArt community where everybody of every skill level was celebrated and people generally weren't mean about it. you could even draw on a premade base and folks would still celebrate the fact that you created something at all
if you guys watch the kardashians and learn their lore you will know that they don't consider fillers to be plastic surgery. there was a whole episode where kim talks about how her butt has no work because her fillers don't show up on x-rays or something 😂
seeing white queer folks arguing with JP queer folks over a manga originally written in Japanese has reminded me that the queer experience is tied closely to culture, particularly your local culture, and it is honestly quite racist to force your own narrative onto other cultures
worst thing about making a comic is when you have to go back and read old panels to make sure your story is consistent and then taking psychic damage from seeing your old art
@pencilforge
his main drive to being in front of the camera is that he's gung-ho on following what the YouTube algorithm wants - and is very extreme about it. so as long as he's calculated that being in his videos will give him maximum views, he's going to keep doing it
I feel like we rarely talk about how a lot of art freelancers are able to pursue their career full-time because they have a support network for stability, whether it's family, a spouse, or living with a bunch of friends. it's incredibly difficult for someone to freelance alone.
also another benefit that comes from this for you is being able to better visualize your character's voice
...as well as your writing. working with VAs and hearing them recite my cheesy lines helped me figure out where to improve my dialogue 🤣
STORY/WRITING
it's true that people love visuals, but many readers will be forgiving of rough art if the writing is excellent and entertaining. take One Punch Man and XKCD as examples of comics that are engaging and well-loved without the need for fancy art.
@DJJazzyJ2Real
this is exactly how I feel too. like, completely separate from the legal stuff going on, just from a human standpoint, it is very much a breach of trust finding out someone you thought was a friend had secretly been recording you the entire time.
if you get approached by a new webcomic platform, particularly for an exclusive deal,
- do NOT sign an NDA right away
- ask everyone in your circle if they've been reached out to too
- see if anyone has had a bad experience or felt sus talking to them
peers keep each other safe!

nobody really tells you this when you engage in content creation but the moment you become a creator it's very important to set boundaries. you and your audience are in vulnerable, sensitive positions and that can escalate in various ways pretty quickly
more on this, you'll notice a trend of webcomics that have great art, but people eventually get bored and stop reading because the story is not as fun, or drags. sometimes initial overnight popularity does not equal all-time success. art is just one facet of webcomic maintenance.
I'll just say this for every dude who wants to make a startup for webcomics bc they wanna get in on this market:
if you REALLY want to help webcomics and stand out, you need to offer marketing. we can literally host anywhere. even host ourselves. what we need is USER ACQUISITION
consider what kind of investment you want your readers to keep returning to as a serial work. what makes them want this comic to be a consistent part of their life?
- a funny joke every week
- a story that gives their life excitement
- characters that are like their best friends
PROMOTING
when you're indie, you're your own PR/Social Media/Marketing Manager. there is always MORE you can do to extend reach, and sometimes the best tactic is to release as much marketing material as you can until one of them succeeds - much like fishing.

decentralization is fun and games until you realize you're at the mercy of the sole individuals who own the server you're on and don't have any protections as a user that are LEGALLY enforced on corporations running the app.
CLARITY
this is a big one that I push a lot when talking about webcomics with people. work hard to have clear writing AND clear visuals. even if you can't draw something very well... try to communicate the intent as best you can. readers appreciate clarity more than anything.
back to OPM, ONE's original work was praised for excellent storyboarding above all else. utilizing focus points and understanding what you want the reader to experience is critical, regardless of aesthetic ability. have a goal with each panel and aim to communicate that.
this is not a "corporate-owned apps are better" take but more "it's significantly more dangerous to give your data to an individual who will not face legal repercussions for abusing your data"
my advice to young people: take every break you can. don't stay late at work. don't do more than the bare minimum. otherwise, you'll pay for it later with tons of health issues and a wasted youth. a stable retirement isn't worth anything if you're not healthy enough to use it
I am often disappointed at how many people treat posting on webtoon as a get rich/clout quick scheme, as if comic making isn't a mix of genuine effort and luck
@crateshya
yep! it's got a high comorbidity with ADHD, depression, and bipolar. there's still more research that needs to be done, but these things seem to have some connections biologically to the circadian rhythm (there's a few articles on like proteins and stuff you can read out there)
CONSISTENCY
Keeping to a weekly+ schedule is HARD, so I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have the time or stamina, but readers will still be happy to tune in even every other week or once a month as long as your upload schedule is on-time and reliable.
another example - Attack on Titan was always riddled with anatomy, proportion, and foreshortening mistakes, but despite that, it's still very well-loved. even if a scene looks unappealing aesthetics-wise, you still understand what's going on.
if you're a webcomic creator and you wanna go on hiatus for the holidays just do it everyone else is busy during the holiday season anyways and thus engagement is low right now you can take your break!!!!!
@grave_weaver
as a fellow child of SEA immigrants I know of people doing this on purpose so school would be easier if they're kids, or making themselves older so they can get elderly benefits faster 😂
one thing you need to take note is that not all of your readers are going to subscribe or enable notifications for your work, they will just come in whenever they feel like it. so having a regular schedule they can rely on, when they KNOW there's gonna be new content, is critical
sometimes the things you love to create are not trendy and will be difficult to market, period. it doesn't mean your work lacks inherent value. it just means mass-appeal is harder to obtain. at this crossroads, you may need to reflect on what's most important to you as a creator.
I honestly have a LOT of mixed feelings about my experience with this commission. rev ghosted me for the entirety of the first few months and didn't respond until after I expressed my intent to open a dispute for a refund. we talked about his personal situation, and I agreed-
it's called hau ntshav tes. usually lovers do this when they cannot be together/cannot marry for whatever reason, they drink each other's blood from the hand so that they can meet again in the next life and be together for every lifetime after that.
I do wanna note that it's interesting how non-Chinese fans online consider danmei = xianxia danmei when danmei is a broad category that has modern, sci-fi, non-historical settings too
it's BL in Chinese. danmei isn't JUST ancient Chinese gays
when I was about to tell my parents about my mildly-successful webcomic my mom was like "is it porn? are you drawing porn? it's okay if you're drawing porn as long as you're making a lot of money from it"
creators you should totally go all-in with the cringe edgy concepts you loved as a teenager because teenagers also consume media and, to no surprise, will LOVE those cringe edgy concepts
you also have to consider the quality of uploads, especially if you're on a platform that DOES send notifications. you can lose readers for frequent content that they may not be interested in - like an update specifically for one special art, or frequent notices.
I love taking advantage of the whole "webcomic readers only look at a panel for two seconds" thing by putting visual foreshadowing all over the place. so much is in plain sight you just gotta look for it 😆😆😆
I think the main takeaway from this is that we have this fallacious perspective of mastodon as a standard social network. it's just a forum template that resembles twitter that can kinda link to other forums. and you have to trust some guy with your social identity on his server.
some people may want to bump their work, but it can have the opposite effect as subscribers will view these items as spam - content they're not invested in. you should keep your comic uploads as just the comic, extras should be elsewhere or tacked to the end of uploads.
why do we entrust our data to corporations? because they have to register their business, are monitored by the government, and have a legal expectation to adhere to certain regulatory standards.
a mastodon instance owner can just disappear off the face of the earth.
there's a caveat here: if the other person dies, you WILL die too. so say you drink your lover's blood, but you both marry other people. when your old lover dies, their spirit will COME FOR YOU so you can both go to the next life together. it explains why people die unexpectedly
I'm relieved the commission came home eventually, but the unprofessional experience made it difficult to be happy with it. I was also disheartened to learn that others were experiencing the same issues, even LONGER than it took for me
instead, going about a month of pure silence and then getting right back into things will be much more fulfilling to subscribers after the wait. quality of uploads is important for overall user satisfaction.
I'm surprised there's not more buzz about the non-binary character in Fallout??? their name is Dane and the Brotherhood of Steel respects and uses their pronouns and that was a huge shock to me lol
rather than "don't make your first project your favorite one/your magnum opus" consider instead: what if you eventually come up with a new project afterwards that's even bigger and better
to note, rev also changed his TOS to include no refunds. I wouldn't have reached out to ask for one if that were a part of the TOS I agreed to back when this was happening. so please be aware about the new no refund policy going forward if you find yourself in this situation.
for example, I'm on hiatus right now. I had considered uploading small comics during hiatus to keep the weekly schedule going - but decided it is not worth it, because it would be disappointing to people who are waiting for the real story to come back, a weekly reminder of that.
