maybe because the idea of roguelike randomization can feel like a reward? since you failed in this configuration, the game will reset and give you another random configuration. while souls death gives you repetition of particular section unless you take alternate route

i think it came down from as far as Cactusquid's rectanglepunk arcade era & many friends at that time. there are big prophets like you and BNDT too. but what could be really interesting to research is... what was BEFORE cactus
