Building
@letsgorally
over the past 11 years has been one of my proudest accomplishments. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to continue our legacy than by joining forces with the talented teams at
@stripe
— I can't wait to see what we create together! 🎉🎉
Rally is joining Stripe! We’re thrilled to continue our journey w/ a company that shares our passion for stellar design & user obsession. Joining Stripe is the perfect next step — we’ll combine our creative energy to develop & scale great experiences for millions of businesses.

Sometimes I think about how easy we designers have it. In terms of what we get to spend our time doing and the salary we do it for.

Everyone likes to reference
@stripe
as an example of great design. What I think is more interesting is that Stripe decided to invest in great design + brand over the long term—something I think many tech companies (startups) don’t think deeply enough about. (1/3)

@figma
can’t churn out a privacy “focus” mode fast enough for larger teams to empower designers.
A mode where designers can focus / be invisible to do WIP work in a large shared file without being distracted by lots of other viewers hovering.
Saw a company I’ve admired for years post about an unpaid internship opportunity on Instagram. I couldn’t control myself and DM’d them and explained (nicely) why unpaid internships are unethical. 👴🏻
Many agencies are hiring. Not many of them allow you to live with this kind of access to mountains.
Sure, you could sit in traffic on your way to Lake Tahoe for 3-9 hours on the weekends or you could drive roughly 30 minutes to get to these kind of places EVERY DAY.
Visual designers who've never worked on complex, constrained problems outside of web / 5-10 page micro sites. UX designers who've only worked on complex constrained problems but have never cared or learned solid visual design taste and how it can elevate a UX. Design 2018 🤦♂️
Being a dad is just incredible. Been told so many times but it’s true that one doesn’t truly know till they experience it for themselves.
So excited to hang out with this little dude more during paternity leave.
Nico says hello 👋🏼
Looking for a talented freelance designer to collaborate with the team over on events-related web projects for the next 5 months! A strong eye & experience in visual design, interaction, and systems are essential. Looking for someone to start in August
@justahl
Yes.
Unsolicited opinion FWIW 😬 — design systems are fantastic for optimizing building products within orgs.
Terrible for up & coming designers to level up their visual design craft.
Designing something from a blank canvas w/o a system or UI sticker sheet is a lost skill 😞
Rally is about to enter it’s 10th year in business!
So much ❤️ + gratitude to all of our friends, colleagues, & clients past + present who have helped us along our journey.
2 personal take aways: Persistence & Optimism
I’m excited for the next 10 years at
@letsgorally
🎉
It’s exciting to see design communities starting to thrive in the medium sized cities where work, lifestyle, and cost of living are more balanced. The shift is gradual but it’s happening 🙌🏼
I still get butterflies when I swing over to a dev’s desk and see something awesome getting cooked up. There is nothing like seeing a design come alive in development with the same care and craft that it went through during the design phase. Can’t wait to share.
2020 has been a tough year for
@letsgorally
We will record our 1st loss since we began in 2011
Loss: between $12k - $64k
Gross rev YOY: -39% 🤕
Despite hardship, very proud of this:
• We didn’t do any layoffs ✅
• Everyone got a raise ✅ (except partners)
• 2021 looks 🤩
The biggest misconception about hiring great designers is over indexing on their professional work portfolio.
And under indexing or ignoring their personal taste and potential.
Friends, some tough news that I’ve debated whether or not to share publicly:
I was very recently diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Still pretty shaken over the reality of this truth. 2024 is going to be one helluva ride🎢
Feels like running a business for over 10 years has actually aged me 20 years.
If you’re starting a business — plan on it taking a physical, mental, & emotional toll on you…
…probably more than you think.
Protect your well-being as much as you can ✌️

Also, for parents raising multiple kids with zero extended family living in the same state - pls send all the advice 😆🤪
10.5 years ago people thought I was crazy for moving to SLC. No design scene. Not many bars or restaurants. Just the outdoors ⛰ 🌵 🎿 🚲
So cool to see so many amazing designers moving here lately. 🤗 🤗 🤗
Office reno update. The saga continues. Island countertop and the backsplash in the kitchen are now installed. So many little things left to fix and install.
7 years and counting at Rally...
I cannot describe how grateful I am for getting to work with so many talented, passionate, and genuinely wonderful people over the years.
Looking forward to an exciting 2018
🖤🖤🖤
I want to see design that solves hard problems elegantly. I want to see design concepts that inspire beautiful craft and creativity. Not one or the other. The design community needs both 🖤
Nothing will make you appreciate how precious life is like watching someone you’ve loved your entire existence pass way.
Life is short, friends.
Savor the moments and memories. 🙏
Design / Tech Twitter is terrible at listening to one another’s feelings and instead is dismissive and rationalizes the other view point into oblivion. Let’s all go to therapy. Have a great weekend.
Gap within design education at a university level: not enough focus on teaching taste. Too much focus on tooling. Get kids inspired on what good design is. Force them to mood board and analyze great designs for a semester—and all the reasons why those designs work well.

Like an absolute insane person, I needed the entire
@letsgorally
office lighting system on independent dimmer switches, including under-mount LEDs. Because MOOD.
I've been very fortunate to learn what gives me inner peace: 5-10 hours per week exercising in complete solitude in nature w/ nobody around and no headphones.
I stumbled upon this realization early in my life, and it keeps bringing me more happiness the older I get.
#grateful
Excited that
@letsgorally
just hired our first full-time remote designer. She is not on Twitter but happy to have her. Also stoked to formally embrace remote work culture going forward 🎉
All the flash devs (myself included) from the previous decade lived for building this kind of stuff. I miss this kind of playfulness and craft in development. 😭
Checking out the new windows in the new office with the little dude 👶🏻. We’re getting so close to being done with the renovation 🤪. Photos by

Back in the office today after 3 months of parental leave. Grateful to the
@letsgorally
team and our 3 month leave policy 🙏. Got another co-worker going on leave starting around April, excited for him and the bonding time with his future newborn.
Why don't we all go to therapy more often? It's honestly been the best way I've been able to cope through some of my more difficult work/life events. Does everyone see a therapist and just not say they do?
Our 10th
@letsgorally
holiday party is tonight 🎉🎉
11 years in business. Started in January, 2011.
Also today, a pipe decided to burst & spew water through the interior & exterior of our foundation wall. Life happens 🙈🙈.
Still gonna celebrate tonight w/ my Rally fam ❤️❤️❤️
Great Outcomes > Great Process
As a former agency owner, I found it tricky to articulate our 'process' to new clients.
Design is quirky. It’s not like manufacturing. You can't just replicate a process from one project and expect it to deliver a great outcome on another.
Can a tech company (startup) be successful without significant investment in design? Of course!
But the next time you reference Stripe—please don’t pretend like Stripe’s brand and design didn’t cost a bloody fortune to build and maintain.
Also, kudos to Stripe 👏🏻 (3/3)
The role of design and design process within a large corporation is very challenging.

As well as managing design load per designer. Too much and one is spread far too thin across initiatives. Too little and one is bored and feels devalued.
Life has other plans for my future and it doesn't involve building a house.
Do you know anyone who might be interested in taking over these gorgeous plans for a custom modern home 10 minutes from SLC?

Lighting progress y’all. Pendants and up lighting in the main area are now on two independent dimmer switches. Gotta be able to set the mood appropriately 🕯
A modest team, free of ego, open and trusting, and highly collaborative, will take a project much further than a single talented individual or even a large team overflowing with talent.
We're hiring a full-time Design Director at
@letsgorally
- Strong opinions loosely held
- Exp. leading teams to successful outcomes
- Ability to juggle multiple projects w/ ease
- Incredible eye for design
- No ego
- Team player
- Loves being a mentor
