Was recently reminded of a guy who found a bunch of Hermès scarves among his grandmother’s personal effects after her passing. The collection was so rare that Hermès offered to buy all of them. Instead, he had them sewn together and stitched into his tailored jackets as linings.

My $0.02: Clothing should be a marker or microcosm of one’s larger appreciation of design, attention to detail, articulation of taste, etc. It’s true this limits tidy cultural identity but is, imo, a more authentic (and scalable) expression than adherence to strict subcultures.
