Japanese artist Haru Nemuri:
"If you're incapable of reaching out to the most vulnerable people in society, let alone if you ignore them, you are in no position to talk about punk or hardcore as central to your life and music, regardless of whether you're musician or listener."
One day this will all fall apart. Emoji designs will change and the below tweet will no longer look like a heart on most devices rendering it.
But right now, in this moment, the rainbow, dango, magic wand, boomerang, pencil, carrot, umbrella and crayon form a heart for us 🫶
yesterday I met a Japanese exchange student who told me she had met a Dutch student who studied at Waseda during last year's Tokyo Trans March. Unfortunately she forgot the person's name.
She shows me a selfie she took with the person.
IT'S LITERALLY ME. I WAS THE DUTCH STUDENT
Peculiar, the way British "journalists" know how they/them pronouns work, the moment they're writing about a trans person who goes by he/him or she/her.
Haru Nemuri, a Japanese singer and songwriter:
“If you're genuinely worried about Japan's declining birth rate, I think you should probably write songs that go "please lower taxes" or "make tuition free" instead of "make sure to love one another".”
With every transphobic tweet and action from JK Rowling, the feelings of intense discomfort I experience whenever people express enthusiasm about anything related to Harry Potter in my presence, grow stronger.
Fukuoka City's board of education has settled on a plan to let students, regardless of whether they are boys or girls, choose between wearing skirts or pants.
This decision came after deliberations involving a student panel comprised of 14 students.
A 31-year-old nonbinary Japanese Buddhist monk, who also happens to be a make-up artist, has recently published their autobiography in the hopes of showing other people the beauty of being who you are. 🌈
With one of the other Japanese exchange students I met yesterday I had several mutual insta friends who always hang out at this one particular club in Tokyo, so she was immediately like "wait you've been to that club too!? And met those people there too!??"
On Christmas Eve, activists in Hiroshima plan to distribute free coffee & cookies near the Starbucks at Hiroshima PARCO, while calling for an end to the massacre in Gaza.
They'll also explain why exactly they're doing this right next to the Starbucks.
I think a lot of the people terminally angry at JP>ENG translators don't realise just how different the two languages really are. Some genuinely seem convinced that every single Japanese sentence can be rendered only one way into English, perfectly, w/ every little nuance intact.
Dutch drag queen Dolly Bellefleur shares her fave photo of 2023. During Amsterdam Pride Walk she spotted a woman who had trouble carrying huge garment bags. She asked if she could help. The garments in question: two dresses for a wedding. "Clouds of tulle that would befit Barbie"
Rightwing weeb community distraught about recently installed commercial billboards featuring same-sex couples near Shibuya Station.
Just wait until the day they find out Shibuya literally initiated a policy more than 8 (!) years ago to officially recognise such relationships.
The relevant department of Kadokawa has decided to cancel the publication of a Japanese translation of Abigail Shrier's "Irreversible Damage", after many people sent critical comments about the content of this book.
Always boggles my mind how a certain subset of weebs has such difficulty understanding the very simple fact that trans and nonbinary people exist in Japan too and aren't a uniquely Western phenomenon.
One time in Tokyo, a taxi driver who was about to drive me from Ikebukuro Station to Sugamo asked me where I'd been hanging out that evening. I told him "Shinjuku Nichome."
He followed up with a sincere "this might be a bit too personal to ask... but do you go there often?"
The Saimyoji Temple in Kawagoe City made a beautiful trans flag with flowers for

In this interview, former AKB48 member Nana Okada reveals they're nonbinary and talks a bit about how their sexuality (or perhaps their understanding of their sexuality) has changed over time.
As listed in the quoted tweet, Japan now has 9 openly LGBT local assembly members.
Two openly gay assembly members didn't run for reelection this year, but three new transgender women and a lesbian politician successfully entered Japan's local politics.
I think about the taxi driver now and then. It's funny how "do you often go to Nichome" was his way of asking me if I'm queer. The small little discount at the end of the ride was kind.
In the first ruling by a high court on the matter, the Sapporo High Court has ruled that Japan's lack of marriage equality is unconstitutional, and in violation of articles 14 and 24 of the country's constitution. 🏳️🌈

*Company starts hiring more women*
"I don't hate women, but shouldn't we think of the historical accuracy in the workplace?"
Japanese women can't advocate for changes in Japanese society without non-Japanese men chiming in to allege these women are merely pawns of "cultural imperialism", and arguing that what women ACTUALLY want is to be in the kitchen, raising kids, doing chores...
Gen Suzuki, a transgender man whose application to change his legal gender was approved by the Shizuoka Family Court in October despite not having undergone sterilising surgery, has officially received his new register!
"Japan has granted a long-term visa to an American man who married his same-sex Japanese partner in the United States, in what his representative called on Monday a 'breakthrough' move in a country that does not recognize same-sex marriage." 🏳️🌈
I told him yes, he told me he wasn't LGBT himself but that he mourned the death of Ryuchell. We talked a bit about HRT and about transphobia and by the time he got to my sharehouse I couldn't find the right amount of cash in my wallet immediately and he gave me a small discount.

After a successful petition campaign started by a transgender boy, the mayor of Tokyo's Edogawa Ward has said he will be looking into making it so that middle school students won't be restricted in their choice of uniform by their sex or gender. 🌈

The issue in Japan with "overtourism" right now is that all these places that are flooded with tourists are busy making themselves less and less attractive, when what's really needed are policies that make the tourists go to the places that badly need them.
The Mayor of Himeji wants to increase the price of admission to Himeji Castle for overseas tourists. Tickets for all over 18s are currently 1000 yen. The Mayor says this is around $7 and the tourist price should be more like $30.
Prime Minister Abe was a champion of democracy and a firm believer that no economy, society, or country can achieve its full potential if women are left behind. I am shocked and devastated by his assassination—a loss for Japan and our world.
Incredibly embarrassing stuff from Kadokawa here. Starting with the statement "We're against discrimination. BUT...", followed by a bunch of misinformation and misconstrued statistics to justify publishing a translation of an unscientific anti-trans book.
Today (Jan. 22), Osaka Prefecture's partnership registration system started, thus giving many more Japanese LGBT couples the ability to have their relationships be officially recognised by public housing, hospitals and other organisations.🌈

A significant portion of my Japanese friends are nonbinary, and of the top of my head at least one of them uses it/its pronouns in English. The idea that transness and the vocabulary we use to discuss transness are purely Western phenomena is completely nonsensical.
"Wow, what made you decide to pursue a degree in Japanese Studies?"
idk. your country's cultural soft power played right into my poor decision-making skills, I guess??
It's honestly kinda cute when Americans assume that the reason why you, as a non-American, know so much about USA politics is that you're just genuinely "interested" in it, or that you find it "entertaining" to follow.
Believe me, I wish I didn't even know the USA exists.
A protest is scheduled to be held on Wednesday in front of Kadokawa's main office, in relation to the announced publication of a translation of Shrier's "Irreversible Damage", which has been widely criticised for spreading misinformation and stoking transphobia.
Taiga Ishikawa says LGBT people cried tears of happiness over Sapporo court ruling, asks Koizumi how he'd feel if he'd have a gay kid.
Koizumi: I'd want to be the kind of parent they can come out to.
Ishikawa: I'd like to team up w/ you & bring forth marriage equality together.

3- japan has a very low birth rate and a very high death rate so the government is doing everything they can to stop the declining population by enticing sex in modern media
"same kanji and everything come on", is so funny as an argument considering cases like 女子 vs 子女, 王女 vs 女王, 会社 vs 社会, 年少 vs 少年, 外海 vs 海外, 本日議会 vs 日本会議, and countless other such examples.
"What made you decide to study Japanese Studies?"
Well, they let you choose a university major before your prefrontal cortex is fully formed. I think that may have been a big factor.
Yesterday Fuchigami Ayako, a trans woman, was elected in Hokkaido's prefectural assembly elections! 🎉
In doing so, Fuchigami will be Japan's very first openly transgender prefectural assembly member! 🎊
On the one hand, "please scream inside your heart" is a very bad translation.
On the other hand, it's a powerful sentence that enriches the English language.
On December 23, an anti-trans protest was held in Shinjuku.
This person says a bunch of high schoolers who passed by joined in the counter-demonstration after hearing about what the whole thing was about. "We have LGBT folks at our school too!"
Japan's Supreme Court has ruled that the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry's decision to restrict a transgender employee from using the women's restrooms was illegal.
Important ruling for the rights of transgender people in the workplace.
Starting today, LGBT couples can apply to have their relationships recognised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's "partnership system". 🌈🌈🌈
The actual policy itself will start next month. The TMG follows in the footsteps of at least 239 other Japanese local governments.
A public middle school in Himeji City will move to a genderless uniform for all its students, which will consist of a blazer and slacks, starting next school year. Students who wish to wear skirts will still be able to do so if they request it.

The daruma at the Saimyoji Temple in Kawagoe will be rainbow-coloured this year, emphasising that it will continue its LGBTQ-friendly endeavours. 🌈
In 2020, this Buddhist temple started holding wedding ceremonies for queer couples and was the location of LGBTQ-related events.
Okay so the point of the first tweet of this thread isn't "wow she didn't recognise me?!" but "damn, the world sure is a small place; what an amazing coincidence!"
I hope that helps.
Wonder how Japan manages to have basically no homeless people, no giant rats, no drunks, no drug addicts, no litter, no weed clouds, one blasting loud music.
Last year at a techno club in Tokyo I joked to a Japanese woman "my gf is going to make a lot of money, so I just need to make sure I stay pretty."
She took it seriously & I could feel her figuratively grab me by the shoulders. "Girl, no! You have to be financially independent!"
GOOD NEWS:
At last, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike--after much pressure from the public, rights organisations, and metropolitan assembly members--has finally indicated an intention to adopt a prefectural partnership system that would recognise LGBT couples' relationships! 🌈
It's interesting, and also very embarrassing, how anime seems to function as this sort of foreign boogeyman for people who seek to pathologise and stigmatise transness, often without having the slightest clue as to what anime entails.
After receiving a racist hate letter amid COVID-19-fueled sinophobia, a restaurant in Yokohama's China Town has been overwhelmed by huge queues of customers who decided to dine at the restaurant to show their support for its owners.
If you think Japanese Twitter is somehow devoid of politics and only filled with tweets about anime and virtual youtubers, it mostly says a lot about who you follow on Twitter and/or your ability to actually read Japanese.
On May the 23rd of 2020, Akita Prefecture's very first rainbow pride will take place: the Akita Pride March.
