The United States of America is called "America" because it is named after **Amerigo Vespucci**, an Italian explorer who first demonstrated in 1502 that the lands Christopher Columbus encountered in 1492 were part of a separate continent from Asia. His name was Latinized to "Americus" in Latin writings, and "America" came from the feminized form of his name, "Americus". When mapmaker Martin Waldseemüller published his world map in 1507, he labeled the newly discovered continents "America" in honor of Vespucci's contributions to understanding the geography of the New World. Over time, the term "America" came to be used for the entire landmass of the Western Hemisphere. The formal name "United States of America" was adopted when the country declared its independence in 1776, but colloquially and internationally, it's often just called "America" due to this historical naming convention.
