C’mon C’mon is a BEAUTIFUL human film that snuck up and connected with me deeply. Year-best performances and pitch perfect chemistry between Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Norman (one of the best child performances I have ever seen). I fucking wept and it’s my favorite this year 10/10

Brilliantly written and perfectly conceived in every sense, May December had me gripped throughout with its deep dive into the essence of its characters. Portman, Moore, and Melton give year-best performances. Score was striking and memorable. Oh and give Charles Melton the Oscar

Anora is excellent. Madison and Eydelshteyn driver year-best work. Almost got a headache from all the chaos and yelling (it’s often hilarious), but Sean Baker pulls one of his signature endings that punches you in the gut. Easily one of the best films at Cannes

The Iron Claw is a late year gem. At times a gutting, it also has deeply moving moments and is grounded by a sensitive performance from Zac Efron. Cinematography is a standout and the whole cast is excellent. This was a tightrope of a story but Sean Durkin walked it beautifully

Kinds of Kindness will please Lanthimos fans. He and co-writer Fillipou return to their offbeat, darkly comedic style with a mostly excellently utilized ensemble (wished for more Chao). Not much to chew on and I did feel the slow pacing past the two hour mark. But its a fun time!

I just realized nobody talks about Mr Turner anymore. That movie was top 3 of the year and one of the best performances I’ve seen. Got trashed on Letterboxd but has a 94 on Metacritic

A sharp screenplay garnered many moments of mid-screening applause from the first public audience to see Rustin. Colman Domingo may very well be Oscar-bound and the film around him solid! Shoutout to Branford Marsalis’s kinetic score #TIFF23
