Our first preprint from @talusbio just dropped! 🚀 Meet nf-encyclopedia, our #OpenSource @nextflowio pipeline to analyze DIA #proteomics data using chromatogram libraries. That's right folks - its time for a tweetorial 🧵! (1/12)

Pretty fun demo app from @elevenlabsio that gives a voice based on my posts here. Apparently my posts reflect my love of coffee 🙃

With some recent discourse in the #proteomics community around #OpenSource scientific software, I thought it was finally time to jot down my thoughts. I wrote a quick blog post, complete with my own 🌶️ takes. Here's some of what it contains: (1/2)

@mjmaccoss @nesvilab That's fair - I was moreso commenting on the risk of being scooped for working on new algorithms in the open.

@mjmaccoss @fcyucn @nesvilab @i000 Outside of proteomics, Posit (RStudio) has had a lot of success with a dual licensing model. Most of their software is distributed for free under an AGPL license, but upgrading to a paid tier unlocks support and a more lenient license for development.

@nesvilab @i000 Also, kudos to @bruker for supporting open-source with timsrust: as @jspaezp1 mentioned. (Disclaimer: Talus does have a collab research agreement with Bruker and we do contribute to its development)

@nesvilab I agree and I think that it is an excellent point. How folks commercialize software often boils down to the priorities and values of those doing it.

@i000 [not legal advice]: It's also worth mentioning that open-sourcing software does not sacrifice IP rights. Choose a license that you want and you can still patent the underlying algorithms and such, so long as you patent before disclosure.
