I Saw the TV Glow ending discourse so lame. It’s a horror movie and it goes for leaving you with a visceral emotion instead of closure, which is obviously an intentional artistic choice to leave you in an ambiguous state. I found it personally very effective. Good movie!

Schrader is right. Horror is (functionally) a disreputable genre. Great horror movies are a fluke. Most new filmmakers making horror do it cynically because it’s the easiest genre to get produced without needing a good cast. It’s a tragedy when great filmmakers get trapped there.

I SAW THE TV GLOW felt like the cinematic equivalent to Lou Reed’s Lulu. It spiritually broke me and I was heaving with tears when the credits rolled. Genuinely brilliant, a significant work.

Our lead character has clearly made a choice; there’s the introspective moment of growth we’ve been clamouring for the entire film and then it ends at exactly the right moment it should. We don’t know what the choice means or what they’ll do but that’s all we need for the story!

Create a fund to bankroll low budget features from promising young filmmakers who don’t have the resources or networks afforded to filmmakers in major centres. A lot of young artists just need permission to fail and that’s the first step to growth and hopefully saving the medium.
