thinking about my first-year class on Babylon where the professor saw two students snickering about fish omens and she stopped and said there was no point in taking this class if you didn't choose to suspend your own beliefs and believe the way the Mesopotamians believed.

Uncontracted dialects of Ancient Greek AND Mycenaean should be taught before even attempting to foray into Attic Greek if you actually want to understand the language instead of soullessly memorizing a bunch of things that mean nothing to you

I sometimes wonder if perhaps the Sea People were started by exiled onagers. It’s not completely out of the question. At some point in antiquity, a few ships of very competent equids (with almost no soldiers) landed on the coast of the Levant. Where did they come from?

Almost ran after a woman in the tube bc she had cuneiform tattooed onto her leg and I wanted to ask if I could read it but I didn’t let the intrusive thought win bc that would’ve been creepy 🤩

Universities want to hire faculty of color. but not our politics. They want to hire us, but not consider the ways we have commitments and responsibilities beyond ourselves and then they wonder why they can’t retain us. #AcademicTwitter

@nashwakay @induswaliarch It's actually scary how much power universities have already stripped from student unions – biggest example I can think of is the dissolution of the UoL SU (ULU)

@GiovanniFanfoni @sallymub @AimeeMaroux In this case, Saddam Hussein did try to rebuild Babylon, causing massive architectural damage to excavations and old city architecture! The Babylon Renaissance is both tragic and fascinating as a means of displays of power.

I hate!!! Being in Greek classes with only men bc I will ask a question and they'll start explaining things that I already know – eg. today I asked when the variant ksummakhos for summakhos was used and this one guy was like 'oh it means ally 😌...' I KNOW!

When people ask how many languages do you speak, how does everyone count? Do you include ancient languages? Ones that you’re currently learning? What level of language “counts” as a language you know?

Dominique Charpin came and gave a lecture today on Ur and he showed us this tablet where the scribe-in-training had drawn the lines to divide columns so badly that you could tell the teacher was like “no throw the whole thing away and do it again” & it was so funny 😭

It’s odd to think that since I moved away from India, I’ve actively been denied the right of free speech. The countries I moved to did not give me that constitutional right. When I moved to the UK, I naively thought that I had this right but my visa can be stripped at any moment.

This might not be a fun take but I really hate it when people adapt plays that deal with any sort of inequality into a piece where they just completely change the inequality the original text was dealing it and replace it with whatever they want to deal with

I can’t believe I started Sumerian in September because it’s already so much better than my Akkadian (not that I don’t enjoy Akkadian!! Reading the enūma eliš was my favourite part of this academic year) <3

so I actually sat down and did my sumerian and something about this scribe’s handwriting is driving me up a wall because the na/ki signs look THE SAME to the point where even the scribe has made an error and written uru16-ki instead of -na 😭 I miss neo-babylonian

Took me a while to understand how unsuited cuneiform is to Akkadian but I get it now… it feels like it’s been stuffed into boxes that don’t quite fit it whereas Sumerian gets folded into the same boxes

The point of a TW is so that students can familiarize themselves with future content that is potentially upsetting and prepare for it – it isn't to stop them from reading the Classics. Loved being involved in this project over the summer for UCL.

@CNN This is crazy... this woman was forced into trafficking and had to do many things that she would have never done had this man left her alone and she would have led a normal life. By no means is murder a solution but this woman has had to live through the unspeakable - let her go

@annalieseholden You could definitely do it yourself too if need be!! You’d need a bit of background in PIE comparative grammar + sign list + Duhoux’s Mycenean Anthology (: happy to send some stuff over

Does anyone know if there is a list out there of Ancient Greek herbs and their given names in any dialect of Ancient Greek? I'm using the Gg series of Linear B tablets but would like a historically later reference if possible!
