If somebody looked at Nyck de Vries for one 80-minute race last year, suddenly decided they really wanted Nyck de Vries, got Nyck de Vries and then almost immediately decided that 'nah, Nyck de Vries ain't it' - should it really be Nyck de Vries who's getting fired?
#F1
The suggestion that
#F1
's reigning three-time champion is a lil baby who can't manage his video game intake and needs to be tucked into bed at 9pm by his team every GP weekend is *far* more damaging to F1's image than any radio petulance could ever be.
The crash footage debate you can have - but I don't think it's a particularly controversial stance to suggest that we didn't need a) the shots of Bagnaia in agony on the ground and ESPECIALLY b) the shots of his immediate family being comforted
#MotoGP
I'm glad
#F1
is trying something re: abuse, but I think it would be a lot more effective if specific types of behaviour were named rather than hidden under the catch-all 'abuse' umbrella.
Nobody who's being abusive will acknowledge they're being abusive.
After
#MotoGP
leaves the Red Bull Ring this weekend (and before it comes to Portimao for the finale), it will hold eight races across Misano, Barcelona, Le Mans, Aragon and Valencia.
2019's winners at those five tracks: M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez, M. Marquez.
Whoever takes this title, Max can't be allowed to race like this in Abu Dhabi, or going forward.
#F1
's allowed him to get away with it for far too long.
If I'm an F1 team, I'm definitely more than a little annoyed at how F2 cars regularly kicking the bucket is getting in the way of my capacity to assess up-and-coming talent, you know?
Ultimately a drink-driving charge should be a multi-race suspension at the very least as a baseline, no? And then we go up from there depending on the circumstances?
#MotoGP
Watching F2/F3 on Russian TV is an experience. F2 becomes "Shwartzman/Mazepin versus ENEMIES OF THE STATE (FIA, Tsunoda, etc)", F3 becomes "the Alex Smolyar show".
Wonder if it's similar for other countries, and whether it's the approach expected by the audience.
The best part about F1 launches is how they bring out the grumpy old people who desperately hate modern grand prix racing, but are inexplicably online to talk about it.

Seen this movie at the Red Bull Ring before - except with a certain Repsol Honda rider in the 'odd one out' role, dragging his bike to places where it does not belong.
#MotoGP
He's unlikely to ever escape the shadow of his brother (and I don't think he cares to) but Alex Marquez is a deeply interesting rider, and I think
#MotoGP
would be worse off without him. But he needs to improve.
🗒️ My interview with the man himself:
Pecco's 1m50.9s is quite scary. Enea's 1m51.0s is scarier - hardly a one-lap specialist, coming off a sketchy season...
Looks increasingly plausible that the GP24 is just absolute dynamite.
#MotoGP
Perez's penalty is another example of how
#F1
defaulting to a 5s penalty for almost everything means drivers in good cars running out of position are borderline incentivised to put midfielders into the wall.
Like, it was objectively good for Perez's race that he punted Albon.
@FootballCliches
I think it's not even about the yardage so much as it is about the 'catching' part, which (to me!) implies a GK lapse?
The GK here didn't get 'caught' - he deliberately closed down Benteke and accepted the risk of a lob.
@HSouthwellFE
Never fail to be very surprised by the difference in radio tone between F1 race engineers ("I love you, never worry about anything, we'll get through this together") and F2 race engineers ("your pathetic whines sicken me, never talk to me again").
This is the sign-off Andrea Dovizioso got in MotoGP two years ago - all the requisite pageantry, despite it being a mid-season exit.
If this was Daniel Ricciardo's last
#F1
weekend, think he deserved the certainty and the chance to have something similar.
Seen so much boring snobbery about the
#F1
movie project - and, look, Hollywood misfires a lot, whatever, but isn't it *objectively good* that the people making this movie are embedding themselves in F1 as much as can be reasonably demanded?
No idea if this is a widely-shared opinion or not - going by Twitter, it's not - but the French GP's random monkey theme is wonderful.
Like, hell yeah, gorilla statues, tricolor gorilla trophies, absolutely nothing to do with anything, sign me up.
Hamilton is clearly doing a lot of good with his activism/veganism/Commission, but his public persona of someone who's all about team spirit and kindness and love clashes quite substantially with the guy giving Bono an earful in the race and accusing the stewards of bias.
#F1
Wouldn't be surprised if that little RB stunt leads to a rule change where the point just automatically goes to the fastest lap of those in the top 10.
#F1
@Aldas001
We're trying to look into this, but for what it's worth this is also how they've ruled Sainz/Piastri at Zandvoort and Sargeant/Stroll just now.
So, 1) is consistent with recent precedent. As for the reason for that recent precedent, ? ? ? ?? ? ? ?
@alicepowell
Genuinely incredible that your original tweet didn't mention Max or Lewis and the reply has immediately made it a Max/Lewis thing. How deeply exhausting.
Kubica/Williams officially in the 'it's getting ugly' phase of the divorce. Not entirely convinced it's worth him seeing out the season.
Shame it's turned out like this anyway.
Got a pet theory, unsubstantiated by historical knowledge or any particularly good research, that Taka is the best podium-less rider in
#MotoGP
history. On combination of bursts of pace and overall body of work.
⭐️ Today's unsung
#MotoGP
hero
0.4s over Zarco
0.5s over Mir
0.9s over Marini
... all for just 19th place
But if this is Takaaki Nakagami's last full-time season in MotoGP, you can't say he isn't giving it his all.
I'm not sure Quartararo has generally been his ruthlessly efficient self this year - but he can feel awful about this Q1 exit.
Clearly got to the limit of the bike right away, half a second up on Morbidelli, then got gobbled up by better machines on the second run. Wow.
#MotoGP
Your new
#MotoGP
team owner is "student of the game" Justin Marks - who came prepared with a super-sleek tribute Nicky Hayden livery and a hard sell.
Any fears over MotoGP 'Americanisation', etc. - I struggle to share. To me, this is just obviously good.
Should say - Zarco-to-Yamaha isn't like a rumour I've heard or read somewhere or anything. Zero indication it's happening.
Just something I think Yamaha must explore before Ducati rubber-stamps another Zarco extension.
#MotoGP
Don't think you have to be an anti-royalist/anti-monarchist or whatever to be genuinely bewildered by this.
There's something like 1500km between Imola and Windsor Castle.
Qualifying and all three of
#F1
's practice sessions at Imola this upcoming weekend have been moved.
This is to ensure cars aren't on track while the funeral of Prince Philip is taking place in the UK:
It will have been a brutal 24 hours for them mentally, so nothing but my sincerest admiration for the
#WorldWCR
duellists who put on a *mega* show yesterday and today.
... But a special mention to Maria Herrera and the two filthiest final laps I've seen all season. Hot damn.
F1 Twitter's really not having a great time with this McLaren/Audi story.
A report doesn't mean it's 100 percent happening. Likewise, a denial doesn't mean that the report was total nonsense.
Come on, people.
As usual, glaring Brit bias.
What else could he have done to score better than Norris, apart from qualify well and not take out Tsunoda?
#F1
(A trial run so that I'm better prepared when I inevitably stumble upon this exact tweet in my explore tab and get annoyed)
@ShadowTodd
I feel retroactively annoyed by the framing of Avatar 2 as a rebuttal to Marvel's dominance or whatever after seeing the actual movie and thinking - maybe wrongly - 'oh, this is just a low-tier Marvel sequel with the serial numbers scratched off and no jokes'.
I think this will be 10x sweeter than 2021 if Quartararo brings it home.
Basically done the Jon Snow gif against the Ducati army today and pulled it off.
#MotoGP
The front tyres overheat and balloon, the aero creates turbulence, the Ducatis are too good... and still, there's always a chance that any Saturday or Sunday you tune in and it's, like, the best shit you've ever seen
Yuki Tsunoda is a baller and completely deserves the seat, but I suspect I'm not alone in being rattled by AlphaTauri and RB's lack of acknowledgment/public thanks for Daniil Kvyat.
Podium finisher, homegrown, virtually never said a bad word about Red Bull. Don't get it.
#F1
Believe I first met Anthoine in Barcelona in 2013, when he was doing the FR2.0 rookie test after having dominated French F4.
He was lovely guy, obviously immensely talented, and the racing world is unfathomably poorer without him in it.
What a horrible thing.
@Aldas001
Have written this elsewhere so am plagiarising myself, but he's in the Gasly zone so the way to go is what Gasly did - go to Super Formula and make waves. Have little doubt that would get him over the line at his age
Hot take? - Aprilia is the romantic option, but if you're Quartararo and the $$$ offer is really 3x worse than Yamaha's (and I believe it), you don't even take the call.
Beyond the money gap, it's also 'if you can't afford to fight for me, what else can't you afford'?
#MotoGP
Imagine how good this
#F1
season would be turning out if Red Bull had any sense of solidarity (i.e. joined its fellow members of the Big Three in stepping on 5 million rakes)
All the
#F1
crypto sponsorships are legitimately making me pine for, like, Mission Winnow and whatever that McLaren BAT thing was - and that's objectively insane, no?
If you would've said going into today that one of the three top teams would mess up the timing in Q3 and miss out on a second run, absolutely everyone would guess the team correctly.
#F1
For whatever it's worth, think that was a terrible no-call.
An overtake should not be legal if you a) come from behind and leave the rider on the outside no room to remain on the track and b) don't remain on the track yourself!
#MotoGP
#EmiliaRomagnaGP
Bottas really couldn't have picked a much worse time to throw a fit.
That was the driving of someone who either knows they won't be at the team for 2022, or has just made sure of it.
#F1
Should say - Yuki did 100% say it and I have no doubt he meant it, but it's being interpreted in some circles as him just throwing random shade on Liam.
That's not the case. He was directly asked - by me, lol, it's my fault - whether it'd be weird.
#F1
Daniel Ricciardo was the first F1 driver I ever met - 2012, Moscow Raceway, World Series by Renault. Felt a real tinge of sadness today at realising I don't know if I still have the photo.
Liked him then. Never not liked him since.
Thanks for 2014, you superstar.
#F1
A good example is catcalling - for those who do it, it does not register as abuse. Call it out specifically.
That might - I'm not super optimistic, but *might* - at least get some people to go 'oh crap, I shouldn't have been doing that', or others to report them for doing it.
For all the grief I give DtS, the Horner 'change your fuckin' car!' scene is PHENOMENAL - and genuinely not one I would've expected to get through whatever the approval process is.
#F1
I actually was on Nakagami's side mostly in the Rins/Nakagami clash at Mugello, and he's clearly a good bloke.
But "no further action" on the crash he caused today is in-ex-cusable. Unjustifiable. Boggles the mind.
#MotoGP
Spectacular from Miguel, Fabio and Darryn Binder, three riders who I genuinely wasn't sure would be having particularly good seasons in 2022.
This
#MotoGP
punditry lark is hard.
@HSouthwellFE
They should remake Drive but with Ryan Gosling incessantly complaining about the car balance and drowning out the electronic music soundtrack
I'm sorry, I just don't see how it's the FIA's fault that F1 drivers couldn't cope with a late-race restart.
Might as well just have drivers do 58 laps under SC if that's how we feel.
#F1
If Gasly was careless under red flag with no mitigating circumstances, penalise him. Park him for a race. Whatever.
But it's *horrific* optics for the FIA to announce that investigation but not a broader look into the presence of the truck, and the
#F1
drivers sure will hate it.
Also, this is from pre-weekend, but obviously became relevant again after just four corners.
Get him on the RC213V. Stop *this*. What is the point of this.
#MotoGP
Are we seriously going into outrageous conspiracy territory here?
What would be the aim of the conspiracy exactly? To, uhhh... prevent a winner-takes-all Yas Marina finale? To avoid sky-high ratings?
#F1
I hope other teams and drivers make Max's life much harder (in 2023, as 2022 is over), but there's a real visceral delight in seeing a guy you watched in F3 in 2014 thinking 'oh my lord he's going to be an absolute menace' actually become said menace.
#F1
Should make it clear, just in case, that this isn't like some big-time insider info but just my hunch based on respective records (and not necessarily for 2023)
@motomatters
It is a rider's contractual obligation - an obligation bordering on moral, to their crew - to max out the result. A tow is a legal method that works.
Only way to stop it, if it's considered enough of a hindrance/eyesore, is rules. Not just counting on Marc/others to... be nice.
Confused by much of the reaction to the Alonso penalty (like, legit confused, not trying to be a smartass).
Feels reasonable to me that if you stepped on the brakes, accelerated, stepped on the brakes again, and there was a car close behind that crashed, you carry the can.
#F1
It was total bullshit that JZ had 91 laps led, nearly 20 podiums and still no win, just this awful unscratchable statistical itch.
Allez
@JohannZarco1
, bravo. What a race to win, too, worth a good five of them normal ones.
#MotoGP
What if Bastianini was just... like, hurt and off-sequence this whole time, and now he's simply Bastianini again?
#MotoGP
(Yeah, yeah, I know, clearly very good at Sepang, this bike seems to fit him better, etc etc)
#F1
doesn't help itself in terms of public perception re: Andretti.
I'm not sure it has much of a choice, it has to make *some* arguments - but doesn't this all just boil down to the simple stance of 'we'd have to cut out a chunk of prize money, and we DO NOT WANT TO'?
Uccio Salucci has just admitted on Dorna TV that they have two options, Diggia is now the prime contender, and the other is a very young rider who is NOT Fermin Aldeguer
What I'm trying to say is, I'm not sure Marc's main title rivals are maximising this five-race stretch, and if he returns fit and in 2019-like form, they might come to severely regret that.
I think we - the F1 community as a whole - have occasionally gone slightly hyperbolic with the whole 'the halo saves another life' rhetoric.
But I do not see how Roy Nissany survives that crash without the halo.
#F2
@ShadowTodd
I don't think it's a common view but I find Ethan Hunt a really cool character. Not a great speaker, a bit aloof - but supernaturally stubborn in his refusal to accept any sort of defeat, and almost always rewarded for that unwillingness to compromise.
It's a superhero fantasy.
I see that F1 media are exposing themselves as huge Hamilton fanboys and protecting him by... uhhh... accurately pointing out the bit of his car that was missing?
#F1
