What a historic day!
Prime Minister
@JustinTrudeau
in Winnipeg to witness reconciliation in action- the iconic HBC building being transferred to the Manitoba Southern Chiefs.
THREAD: While I celebrate and offer congratulations to
@WabKinew
and
@GregFergus
, for their wins yesterday making history as Canada's first Black speaker and first First Nations Premier; I want to offer a thought and a reflection: 1/4
A thread
Jas worked for me when I worked in PMO but our friendship began years before when he came to my house in an unexpected visit when I had my first child. A deep friendship developed quickly as he became a close friend, who always knew how to make me laugh. (1/5)
Our team is mourning the loss of one of our own today. Jaspreet Pandher spent several years on the team, serving Canadians and dedicating himself to building a better country. He worked hard, spoke thoughtfully, and always knew exactly how to make people laugh.
But pave the way for the path of many. Let's give them patience and grace when we can. Let's offer them our support, let's remember the additional barriers they are facing and together we can help them overcome them. 4/4
I just told my 3 year old daughter that someone like her, a half tamil/southasian woman became the Vice President of the United States. She has NO idea what I said but it felt amazing to say it to her.
And straight up Anti Black, and Anti Indigenous racism along the way by the very institutions that they now lead. While their wins are historic, we need to help support them ensuring that this win is sustainable, and that they do not become an 'only' 3/4
These men are about to face immense pressure about being the 'first', and the fear of being the only, especially given the higher stakes they will face. As racialized men, despite heading up institutions, they will still face additional challenges, biases 2/4
Thinking of my friend
@ArnoldChanLib
today. It is still weird to be in a campaign without him. I miss his wise words and his sense of calm. My love goes to
@JeanYip3
and their family. Love you Arnie.
"We will always stand up against hate" this is a message from a real Leader. Talking about the rise of hate and division and how we must continue to work to stop it with

@ParamountFoods
As I put my kids to bed I am thinking about the poor boy who will never feel his mother's arms around him again. Hate and Islamophobia took his family away.Thinking of my Muslim friends and they grapple with yet another attack on their community.
I can't help but feel that a part of me is gone, a part of me is broken, so many regrets and not enough time. I had the opportunity to talk to him yesterday and I told him how much I loved and cared for him. Goodbye little brother. I love you and will always carry you in my ❤
I have had the honor of knowing
@NavdeepSBains
for over 15 years. He has been a friend, mentor and was the first person to give me a chance in politics. I learned so much under his guidance and wouldn't be where I am today without him. Best to luck to my bhai, Nav.
Was nice to spend time with my friend, mentor and old boss
@NavdeepSBains
as we celebrated both his birthday and his last speech in the House. Politics and Parliament won't be the same without him, but I look forward to seeing what he does next! Happy Birthday Bhai!
Most of all, Jas became my family. Checking in on me when I was busy checking in on everyone. My only regret was not spending more time with him. I know Jas wouldn't want me to mourn him, but to toast to him and share his story, to offer a laugh to someone as he once did.(4/5)
He was passionate on making sure this country stayed diverse and inclusive and ensuring that people knew that Alberta's like him existed. He was an amazing political force who taught me so much about the West. (3/5)
Jas was special. He was caring and spent time checking in on those he knew. He himself flew under the radar never drawing attention to himself but focussed on those who needed support. He often came into my office offering me a chai break,forcing me to take time for myself (2/5)
A very "all lives matter" type of response. Diversity can be easy but inclusion needs to be intentional. If you can't recognize the obstacles that racialized Canadians face on top of all the usual hurdles, how can you lead a country as diverse as 🇨🇦

1/ Today, Leader Erin O’Toole was asked the following question by Omar Sachedina, “After the London attack… you stood before thousands of people and said you were committed to urgent action.
Just finished this awesome book by

Last night, Shahin Moghadam ate the last tupperware of 'ghormeh sabzi' his wife Shakiba made before leaving for Iran. She left freezer full a year ago so Shahin wouldn't eat out while she & their son Rosstin were away. You can see the pain still so deep and raw.

If you know
@SalmaZahid15
like I know her, you know she is anything but oppressed. She is a fierce, hard working woman, who can whip out a policy note, knock 100 doors still find time to make a meal if she wants. But oppressed? I think not

Everyone has their own individual struggles when it comes to mental health. For me, coming to terms that I have postpartum depression and getting help for it has been most important. It doesn't make me a bad mother, or anyone else who is experiencing it.

Sharing this again because I feel that one thing many people don't know about
@AnitaAnandMP
is about her dedication to fighting systemic racism and making Canada a more equitable place for all people who call Canada home. This is central to her values.
There are two things that I really regret I had to cut for space in the final story. One is a look at Anand's LLM thesis and how it came to be. Here are the bits from the cutting-room floor. 6/
A great read about thr importance of intersectionality as companies and organizations think through how to become more diverse.
Also a reminder that diversity is nothing without inclusion
Expecting white women, no matter how well-intentioned, to lead diversity initiatives is problematic when they haven’t experienced racism firsthand. Elevating them to saviour status may do affected groups more harm than good. Via the

Yesterday we gathered together to honour our friend Jas Pandher. I got to spend time with his beautiful family and tell them stories about Jas and his life in Ottawa. Thank you to everyone who came together yesterday. Our hearts our broken, but Jas' legacy will always be with us
Today I paid tribute to Jaspreet Singh Pandher, who recently passed away at the age of 32.
He spent several years on our Liberal government team, serving Canadians and building a better country.
May Jaspreet's legacy continue to inspire those he touched for many years to come.
Who has a plan to make lives more affordable?
@JustinTrudeau
's plan will save families in Toronto $11,000 a year on average for child care.
@erinotoole
's plan would only save them $1,000.

3 hours to go.
We’re closing the gap but are still behind.
If each of you can find two people to vote Launch Angle in the next 3 hours that would be almost 50,000 extra votes...I’d like our chances.

This former beauty pageant contestant started using skin-lightening products at age 10. Sabrina Manku says this desire to fit society’s idea of beauty impacted her self-image. She’s since stopped using them and wants others to do the same.

I've learned so much from you and it was an honor to have you on my team. Looking forward to seeing what you do next! We will truly miss you.
After 7 years of working in politics & for/with amazing staff & leaders, today’s my last day at work as I leave to go back to school.
A younger Kazim would never have predicted working on such important files for 🇨🇦 & the PM.
Few things I’ve seen in my time in politics: (1/)
As someone who lived through the Ottawa Convoy, appreciate
@BonnieCrombie
talking about how Doug Ford was MIA, that it's okay to protest peacefully but this was nothing but that- needed to take action earlier.
#onpoli
If you are wondering where the anti science, racist, and dangerous protests came from check out this thread 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽. You can't talk out of both sides of your mouth and not take responsibility to what it leads too.
🧵 A dangerous conspiracy theory promoted by Erin O’Toole’s own candidate Cheryl Gallant needed to be denounced without hesitation. O’Toole didn’t do that today, but are we really surprised?

I know everyone is thinking of this family today and saying the right things, but go further and ask yourself: how are you preventing this from happening again? Are you an ally? Do you speak up against hate? This needs more than thoughts and prayers, but a call to action.

Last night,
@erinotoole
tried to deceive Canadians. He has promised the Gun Lobby that he would lift our party's ban on these now-prohibited deadly weapons, incl. those used at École Polytechnique, Dawson College, the Quebec Mosque, and in Nova Scotia to kill innocent people.
This is a common Canadian story. My dad also came here and started a business that employed canadians and raised me to love this country and the opportunities that
#Canada
gives us. This fearmongering is not only dangerous but goes against what this country is about
I saw what immigrants contribute to our society: after just a few years, my father, with family support, was employing dozens of Canadians in his cabinet-making business. Read what I had to say about the wedge Conservatives are trying to drive between us
People who come here are often fleeing persecution and are hoping for a better life. They don't deserve to be held in jail like criminals. Happy to see the BC Govt ending this practice finally.
