In 2024, we unleashed unprecedented product velocity and innovation at @Foursquare by embracing a builder-first culture through the following changes: 1) We restructured our product development organization, eliminating traditional hierarchies and the product management function—empowering hands-on engineers with deep domain expertise to lead and drive execution. 2) We organized into small, autonomous, mission-oriented project teams, while maintaining organizational fluidity that allowed us to quickly adapt to change. 3) We implemented a no-recurring-meetings policy, eliminating non-essential agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. 4) We eliminated 1:1s in favor of transparent communication in public Slack channels. 5) We experimented with AI tooling in various facets of software development—with varying levels of success. The impact has been significant: In just six months, we’ve modernized our technology stack, eliminated redundant systems, and shipped more features than in the previous several years combined.

2024 has been transformative for @Foursquare as we advanced our mission to simplify the complexity of working with geospatial data. Our initiatives resonated strongly with the industry: - We open-sourced our Places dataset, receiving overwhelmingly positive responses from developers and businesses. - We launched a desktop version of our Placemaker tools, with additional surfaces and updates planned. - We enhanced our understanding of the physical world by connecting foot traffic insights to purchase patterns, launching 'Sales Impact' for Attribution customers as our first application of this enriched data. - We introduced our Foursquare Geospatial Intelligence Platform (beta), bridging the gap between business decision-makers and geospatial insights. Our commitment to making geospatial intelligence more accessible extends far beyond Places and related datasets—we couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead in 2025.
