The brave service members who fought on D-Day represent the Greatest Generation in our history.
Together, they stood to oppose the forces of fascism, volunteered to lay down their lives for our liberty, and answered freedom’s call at its hour of greatest need.
And today, on
Jill and I greeted 30 World War II veterans who fought on the shores of Normandy 80 years ago.
I thanked each of them for their service to our country.
On behalf of the American people, and as Commander-in-Chief, it is an honor to salute you here in Normandy once more.
The men who fought here in Normandy became heroes not because they were the strongest, or toughest, or fiercest – although many were.
But because they were given an audacious mission, knowing they could die, and they did it anyway.
They knew, beyond any doubt that there are
80 years ago, American and Allied forces stormed the shores of Normandy and bravely fought to defend us against tyranny and pure evil.
Today, we honor the service members who saved the world and sacrificed for our liberty and prosperity.
In honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, an eternal flame was brought from France to Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, reenforcing the bond between our peoples and the sacrifices made for our collective freedom.
