2/4 of the 'Titans' series 2006
This one was about the populace back on Earth getting jaded and taking the expeditionary force for granted. The gold android is an off-duty pilot. More ultraman vibes here with the kaiju.
"-what!! that wasn't its tail?!"
SW:TOR design work, happy some ideas made it in!!! Base character at top left by resident IFS Star Wars nerd and historian Darren Tan-- tacticute jungle trooper with buckles and other shennanigans by me, 2009
The Forever Winter - a game I've been working on for the past few years has finally been announced! Here is Toothy...one of the 'boss' character concepts I designed for the game
"-When our weapons ran dry and the automated factories went to sleep, our leaders took the last lifepods... abandoning us to the dust and the wind, promising to return for us should we ever lay claim to this savage planet."
Personal work, "Tears of a Distant Sun" (2009)
Space Vagabonds: Colonial Defence Sqn (2009)
Infantry that gets to ride in the Nighthound, I took much inspiration from Shirow Masamune for the Sniper's pants as well as the dune(Fincher) stillsuit...
Suit explorations for the Marine faction,
SHRAPNEL (2007) [pt 3.]
Stumbled on this folder of early work while reminiscing thru the comic pages... forgot I had done these ;_; I think the inner frame is still cute! That pop-out ordnance drum was later given to the Militia armour
Edge of Tomorrow (2010) Part 1/2
Art I did for director Rupert Sanders pitch! Adapted from the light novel "All You Need is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.. it was fun coming up with that slightly overkill dropship
one main note was "make it look like they're fighting... in love"
BLACKLIGHT series pt 1 (2008)
I realised I had never shared these works online, but they're out in the wild (and one is on the cover of Tango Down)
Blacklight is special to me, as it was my first job as a concept artist. I never realised what it would become, such a wild ride!
BLACKLIGHT series pt 2 (2008)
Some fun early worldbuilding (+overpaints) of what would later become the base Blacklight and Operator Kit..!
Idea for integrating full-face plate stemmed from the HRV concept. This was also work connected to the film pitch etc, at the same time.
My Zero-G infantry and boarding party concepts, along with some... exotic variants... for Project Hull Breach (Halflife 2 mod, 2004) I honestly cannot recall how the space-horror elements came about but I blame project lead Julian Young, Event Horizon and Dog Soldiers :>
Toothy's biofuel bodybags. I suggested during the making of the trailer sequence we should just turn them all into a literal carousel cape to sell the idea. Props to the animators for the meaty discharge!!! ~.~
Space Vagabonds (2009)
Gregor Theado gave me plenty of room to interpret his lore on this project - and it opened many doors and my perspective on military sci-fi and the mechanical design space ever since. (ps: My fav idea here is a literal psionics-trained remote-viewing WSO.)
Space Harpoons in zero-G and other shenanigans from 2004's Project Hull Breach - fun times with a great bunch!!! It was nice trying to define a technological aesthetic to match each faction.
The Bastion fleet carrier for
@planetside2
, I was stunned when approached to work on the IP as I was a huge fan of the first game... this eventually came out 10 years later, and I got to fly in a Reaver and land on the 1:1 scale 'deck' ingame... and promptly turn into a fireball
An old commission by the incredible creator/writer, John V. Purvis. Project Boots(working title) is his speculative 22nd-Century futurewar drama/ hard-SF IP (2014)
"-make it look like they have to literally hose out the chem-stabilised Pilot from the cockpit"
Armour concepts for Planetside 2, 2010
Fun sidenote: I also drew in scale ref/'fan-art' of what I saw infantry hopefully feeling like in there, in case I wasn't kept on contract long enough to help develop them... a fan can dream right
2017... rare occasion to play with
@Artgerm
's cool brushpens n whatever i found in his pencilcase when i was accompanying him at Tokyo comiccon.. (i couldnt find version when i was done making the eye pink)
Zaku 4 lyfe
Ages ago (2014), when I was dreaming of a game with modular exoskeletons in Micro-G/Space Salvage Operations. Some fun backpacked sentry platforms, and folding vibro bayonets~~
Some fav weapon concepts for Planetside 2, 2010
The 'ATMG' iirc was the coolest brief, balance be damned! Grenades were a fun attempt to explain how akin to PS1, the Thumper GL could deploy hand grenades as an 'accepted' ammo type. 'Common pool'- cheap and widely proliferated kit
Edge of Tomorrow (2010) Part 2/2
My exploration pieces + 1st ver. with white-ash BG. 2nd image is a mood piece exploring one of Cage's many deaths where he came prepared. I enjoyed thinking how Rita could use her own arm vs. her suit arm to show her skill with her suit.
3/4 + 4/4 of the 'Titans' series (2006)
I remember this was at the halfway mark serving my ~2yr military conscription(21yo)... and my posting, and experiences directly influenced aspects of these pieces. Prolly explains the more pensive/ journalistic angle for these 2!
FRONT MISSION EVOLVED 1/2 (2008)
additional detail and integration of Skan Srisuwan's mech designs into some mood/set pieces, good times channeling FM3 vibes ~_~
Since a few Shrapnel fans reminded me: sharing my cover art and Marine faction suit design for SHRAPNEL: Aristeia Rising (2008), along with some cover sketches
Pre-production Concept art of the Scavs I made for Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion (~2008) pt2
MORGAN FREEMAN's character wears the helmet in the film ;0; !!!
props/photo credit: Ironhead Studio
Five-legged Space Tanks, Dropships and some slice of life shots for the zero-gravity infantry combat mod for Half Life 2- Project Hull Breach! (2004)
The most memorable mod project I got to contribute to ;')
More favs from
#StarWars
Galaxies TCG set 2, 2009-2010. I chose Stormtrooper cards as the mini-fan in me really wanted to make them look more competent and like their namesake... than how they are portrayed in the earlier movies. I gave some custom kit too(see ALT descriptions).
Wraparound cover for the Soul Drinkers Omnibus, 2012.. believe this was my very first job w Black Library, and what a tough brief... I spent too much time ruminating over the round ricocheting off the pauldron ...trying to put fun details that i had never seen on older covers
Faction wardrobes for Planetside 2 pre-viz, 2010. My plan to include characters in the vehicle concepts paid off 😬and I was invited to take a stab at customisable kit as part of a wider series beyond whats shown here.. I wanted them to feel protected yet cushy
Old fav works for Nuclear Dawn pt 2. (2003)
wow I /really/ loved my hard round brush with ridiculous spacing back then ;_; ...caterpillar-core brushwork x Demotivational Poster layout vibes
Farsight Enclaves spreading Tau-ism across the stars! (2013) i remember having fun thinking up and working in the chroma shifting effect on the decloaking XV25s
Concept art/mood shot done for Nuclear Dawn (2003), a Half-Life 2 Mod that I worked on as a teen that later turned into a commercial release!
The vibe of this painting was inspired by the gorgeous Korean animation Sky Blue/Wonderful Days~
The Seven Year War: Year One (2006)
Done on various emo weekends whilst serving military conscription, ultimately an excuse to mess around w ideas and modulating styles.
Inspired by DMZ, Ben Templesmith, Ashley Wood. ;) Just gonna dump everything in this thread
Pages 1-2 /10
Ave Dominus Nox🦇
-fan art for ADB's amazing novel that i wish i could have done a cover for...(in hindsight i wouldn't have done it justice so imaginary bullet dodged!)
more mood shots and aesthetic explorations for some faction's deployable structures.. Nuclear Dawn (2003-2004)... please excuse my Demotivational Poster framing phase ;*)
Eternal Crusade concept art! (2014)
(Believe it was also used as the Steam page capsule art ^^') I really enjoyed painting in the overzealous gretchin at the wheel at top right, along with unfortunate passenger...
(left)
"The Express Hellevator" :>
My militia concepts done for the Shrapnel comic (2007) pt 4.
Thought it'd be great to see them dispensed like cluster munitions at low atmosphere.
(right)
Comic b/w art was by Bagus Hutomo, colours by
@leos_ng
, some art direction by me
Spess Knights, Spess Pirates & Spess Ninjas!
I compiled some prelim suit explorations for the 2 factions in Project Hull Breach! Because the Sennalin Rebels were very much Space-pirate in theme, I pushed the idea of having their Special class a space-ninja (2004)
Wraparound cover for
Black Library: Blood and Fire (book 2/2)
A year after the previous Armageddon cover... the Celestial Lion and Grimaldus still back to back at dusk, atop a mountain of watermelon... 2014
My first Games Workshop codex, 2013! Was asked to go cleaner to match existing covers of the time.
Perks of the Black Legion is having nerve-linked fire control system to a bolter that looks like it says, "Show me your dreams-"
#blacklegion
#warhammer40000
Skullet Leader (2008)
Was really inspired by Monster Hunter, great fun in designing that tacti-cute camo kit at the back, and the amphibious combat gear at left!
@Rattapoom_K
Thats why I gave him a tactical pouch to express my concerns at the time ;) (although it was explained to me that the armour has magnetised spots to stick on magazines or other wargear.)
First 'dev doc' on The Forever Winter!!! The team and I consider Riloe to be quite the journalist- even though he doesn't see himself as one. Either way, I'm really blown away by his work, and am glad our paths crossed. :)
@RiloeGaming
doing his brand of peak "not-journalism i swear" journalism... again...
also do check out his (not-related) sweet personal concept art towards the end that ended up becoming related... :v
@HentaiOrc1
No.. its mainly inspired by Evangelion and the concept of combined arms where i wanted to portray a universe in which 'mega units' and truly small-arm troops are well integrated as a fighting unit
Also i remember having done a few commissions for Cthulutech early days!
I was infatuated w Robocain (designed by Craig Davies), especially that face-less spadefaced aesthetic. Instead of housing a TV monitor, i thought a functional excuse would be that its an overstyled remote weapon system..gunports for eyes, sensor suite in skull. Gundam sans face
