RT @uiuxadrian: Before becoming a designer, I failed at 5 careers. Glad I did, wouldn't trade this for anything.

And to add to that, design was always part of what I did, just never something I pursued as a career. I picked up a number of skills along the way out of necessity. Had to learn how to create marketing assets, websites, ads, banners, mockups, clothing designs, and a lot more. Went from graphic design to web design to mobile design to no-code. You can learn a lot faster when you build "real" stuff for real projects.

@RahulDesignWeb3 Fail is a harsh word but to me, failing means not pushing them far enough to turn them into something meaningful. Kind of like what I ended up doing with design.

I'll write a thread reply in a bit but in short, design was always part of what I did, but never something I set out to pursue as a career; just a number of skills I picked up along the way out of necessity. I had to create marketing assets, websites, ads, banners, mockups, clothing designs, etc., for each of these businesses.

@Danielgbright I'll post a reply to this thread in a bit :) I did design while pursuing most of them but never as a serious career decision, more as a necessity.

@SheisRodie Almost all of us start by charging by the hour but as you gain experience and collect data on your impact, you can gradually transition to value-based pricing.

You can do that by asking the right questions. The data is out there, you just need to ask the right questions for the right type of client. For SaaS you could ask them about the: - Monthly traffic (from GA4) - Lead conversion rate (demos → paid plans) - Sales cycle length (days to close) - Customer LTV (avg. revenue per customer) - Churn rate (% of customers who leave monthly) For example: increasing demo signups by 30% for a SaaS with 1000 monthly demos at $500 avg deal = $150k more revenue potential. You could easily charge $15k-$30k for this type of work. This is why specializing helps - you build a database of benchmarks and know what improvements are realistic. + You can back up your claims.

@uiuxadrian How to evaluate the delivered value? Isn’t it a little arbitrary?

@JennieLunis A number of things for sure. I’ve updated copy on the site, added a pre-booking inquiry form that filters out small projects we’re not really interested in. We’re working on a series of updates this Q1 that I think will have possibly the biggest impact on the lead quality

@HeySnoogi Great point! I removed one sentence from the heading and didn’t look at what I’m highlighting in the updated text. Switched it around, thanks!

@alex_barashkov I can't remember the last time when we've been so overbooked 😂 Really dislike the fearmongering dudes on this platform

@olegcoada Before they book a call or request a quote, they have to select their ideal budget range. It works great so far!

@driceroland @designmeagency Price's a bit steep $1.2k/mo and $50/mo per user for a badge so still debating this
