6. This left us with a puzzle – how does the virus evade all 48N defence systems, such as CRISPR-Cas and CBASS? RNA-seq showed us that nearly all defense systems were transcriptionally down-regulated in the infected strain, which probably helps the virus maintain “stealth”.

@jomcinerney Very interesting, and the experiments that you suggest are relatively simple to do, we might just try them... Also, note that the repeats make arrays highly susceptible to spacer loss via MMEJ.
