On this day 18 years ago, the Blackout of 2003 hit NYC. My experience then served as the inspiration for my debut short film, In Sudden Darkness. 🔦 To commemorate the anniversary, I'm putting the film up on my website for a few days: — Enjoy! ✨🖤
What is the most boomer complaint you have? Mine is I think people take their dogs too many places for my taste and also I think everyone should be more punctual.
Tichina Arnold’s work as Rochelle on Everybody Hates Chris is a masterclass in creating a lived in character that hits every single comedic beat every time. The mannerisms, the facial expressions, etc. going from disciplinarian, to funny yet tender & caring wife, mom, friend...
Denzel got like… once in a lifetime kinda talent. A perfect storm of charisma, learning the rules, breaking them, a certain performance rooted in a cultural Blackness & theater tradition. I wish I could read a whole book on his work & the lineage of his acting style.
Denzel Washington won his only Best Actor award for Training Day
One great detail: he improvised the entire “King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me” scene.
Afterwards, he walked over to director Antoine Fuqua and said, “Whoo, I don’t know where that came from.”
You close the rec centers, after school programs, the public LIBRARY, like it makes me so angry! I’m old enough to remember when they had art in schools & then took them away. Young people have no spaces to think or be or learn or congregate like they used to!!
the outtakes & deleted footage are way more fascinating to me actually! i would love to read some writing about what was omitted & why & how that reflects the ethics of the film & imagemaking at large.
ever since i learned there was a Best Butch category in '80s ballroom, i was somewhat bemused the documentary Paris is Burning had no (masc) lesbians in it. watching outtakes i saw the director did take footage from the category, in what must have been around 1987 -- here it is
My short film, In Sudden Darkness, about the NYC blackout of 2003, will be premiering at the 2020 Blackstar Film Festival. The film will play in the shorts block "Kindred" on Thurs. August 20th at 5:30PM. ✨ I'm so excited to share this film with y'all!
we joking but these past two years have been hell fr like and it’s hard not to feel helpless because we’re being failed on an institutional & infrastructural level.
this got me crying because before he even said that i was like who tf is lloyd robertson? 💀 now lloyd catching strays cause she wanna be weird to a child
not even to sound pretentious but i always find it interesting when people aren’t like deep divers/obsessive into particular art forms they like but then also not questioning whether their “original” thought is original before saying things like this:
Kendrick just reinvented a whole new rap sub-genre - Horror Rap. Man, that shit sounded like in was trapped in evil dead.
gory lines and the most eeerie production [them you lied ad-libs were proper scary]
Black Gen X’ers have built cultures from the ground up and aren’t living long enough to have full lives & receive their roses for what they’ve cultivated.
i be getting these jokes off but what christopher nolan is trying to do while a novel virus we have no treatment for is killing people each day is fucking egregious idgaf. put ya pride aside and chalk this summer up as a loss. as many of us have done tf
i have been harping about the importance of / preservation of the american diner as a place of communion for quite some time now. we can’t let them take it away!!!
you know when you pick Black films that are supposed to aid in political education you can pick some comedies and some films about the normalcies of Black life those images are just as important too lol

LisaRaye was on a TVOne show discussing her career & what stuck out to me was her talking about the lengths Cube went through to make her feel comfortable during her scenes in Players Club.

i love adulthood truly, i just hate that i came into adulthood when late capitalism is at a fever pitch. i know people have always been struggling but the wages are truly stagnant my goodness
I also don’t know if I’m tripping but I feel like cafés and coffee shops close kinda early? like damn what if i wanna do some writing or get a bev after 5!? is that so WRONG?!
