super proud. want to support? RT + pre-order here:
i have friends that really isolated themselves in ways that hurt me and worried me. i had to find new ways to communicate AND still understand shit is WEIRD, and not personal. i also have friends i grew strong with. i love all my friends 🥺
understanding that your friends are responding to new circumstances and news information they have never encountered before in totally news ways, knowing that you are too, having grace but also tolerance and CHOOSING TO LOVE YOUR FRIENDS!!!!!
I spoke with Black college students who do hair as means to pay tuition and other living expenses.
This is a story about history, politics, university policy and trust me — it's far more complicated than you may think.
In my 29 years of life... I never really thought I'd see a girl like Jalaiah — a Black teen who has gotten appropriate credit for starting a dance movement — on the cover of a magazine. I grew up knowing Jalaiahs. I think a lot of Black girls see a big part of themselves in her.
when i talk about certain reporters being so hell bent on taking up space and getting high off Twitter engagement that it blinds their own judgement, this is what i mean. They really think this is part of their job. It’s really really not.
this was NOT meant to be a black elitist traveler thread (LOL). I just feel like Mona Lisa has been fed as this "traditionally beautiful" woman, and when I see black women stand confidently in front of it, i think it pushes back against this notion of who is "beautiful."
spoke to
@LaurenLondon
about growing up Black in LA, navigating Hollywood in the early 2000s, Nipsey Hussle (who feels ever present), and the quest she’s been on... forever.
@latimes
my latest for the
@nytimes
: i interviewed megan
@theestallion
about her first pageant (contestants got flewed out), owning who tf she is, and why she wants others to do the same.
Obsessed with this super cute moment from last night’s special screening of The Harder They Fall — Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter (who is a producer) is headed inside but pulls a 180 as soon as he sees Kelly Rowland! That’s family right there.
white ppl be like: “hi i’m here to listen i just want to say - wait did i say your name right? thank you for that correction. again thank you for having me in the space. my thoughts are. i feel. and i am wondering. help. support. my privilege. so sorry. again i’m here to listen”
tabitha brown didn't read wendy imo. she spoke over her life in a way folks around wendy are not doing, and cannot do. she sees pasty wendy, i don't think she was joking
“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye is black. Only when it’s convenient. That joke was my choice, just like slavery.” — Issa Rae while hosting last night’s CFDA Awards, as Kim sat in the audience <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Dream interview, dream cover story - and one of
@Allure_magazine
's last physical issues on stands.
Met up with
@ciara
and listened to her new album in her Range, which will be her 8th. Talked about Atlanta as a creative community + a mecca of beauty.
It’s hard to wrap your head around the unbreakable confidence it takes to be a female pop artist if you aren’t one. No less, during a pandemic and a movement for Black life.
Thankfully,
@chloexhalle
have each other.
@teenvogue
’s June 2020 cover by me:
hmmmm.. BBLs have evolved into more of a personality trait, I’m no longer sure the procedure is necessary lol. plus, having an ass is a mindset. like…? you can’t tell me i don’t have an ass if im sure that i do
Gayle King asks FKA Twigs why didn’t she leave her relationship with Shia LaBeouf
“I’m not going to answer that question anymore because the question should really be to the abuser, why are you holding someone hostage?”
Happy to share I'll be joining
@latimes
IMAGE Magazine as a contributor and Beauty Editor at Large. It's been my dream and my goal to tell beauty stories for a magazine covering all parts of culture, no less, for the city I live. I am excited, so humbled.
A couple months back, I pitched a beauty + wellness focused piece on Tracee Ellis Ross to
@NYTStyles
. Then! I found out she was releasing her hair care line, Pattern, very soon. So the stars aligned for me to write about the Real Queen of Wellness:
FUCK BEING A BRAND. I am a human and no one can take that away from me. i am the realest version of myself always, it allows me to make brilliant work in collaboration with others and this is what i am committed to over anything else.
if you claim to be someone's friend... please support their work. please acknowledge their work now. not when they pop, or when it becomes "cooler" to do so.
"The perception that a man wearing a crop top must be gay, in the closet or at the very least feminine is almost ironic given that the garment’s birth is actually credited to one of the most hyper-masculine activities of all time, American football."
TikTok on thanksgiving hits different and thank god bc to sit here snd read the same jokes... in this economy? under these circumstances? begging for better
I have spoken so highly and proudly of my grandma on Twitter. Her restaurant caught fire a few years ago, but is finally re-openining in February. She passed away a few days ago. I am so grateful for the legacy she left behind. A pillar in her community.
Story time: at about 9 years old, I won a writing workshop contest held by the
@BuffaloBills
and got to interview
@marcelluswiley
. back then, it was the biggest deal of my life!
18 years later, we ran into each other at a bar — and I'm still a journalist, just a taller one 😭
Here are three things that Rihanna does not have time for. One: the craze for soaking hair extensions in apple cider vinegar before braiding them. More comfortable, yes, but, as she asks me incredulously, “And then smell like what? A fricking mothball?”
i just feel like janet jackson, from control to velvet rope and infinitely was/is a pop star who has opinions, a mindset, a perspective, a voice AND a VOICE. i really crave that
@Morgan_Harris17
emerson alum here. please keep us posted and just some encouragement: don’t let them talk you down or be shifted by that. your instincts are correct.
Everybody mad she didn't prepare. I'm mad she decided to insert herself into a profile not about her in this very specific way and thought it was some sort of valuable anecdote. profile is so so so hard but damn
I spoke to
@natasharothwell
, who is so smart, so self-possessed and so focused on her craft.
She gave some damn good life advice when talking about
#insecureHBO
and Kelli.
@TheCut
My favorite quote is from Chloe, and it is very straight forward: “We have to take our power back as women and not allow ourselves to be played.” Period. This is a lot of what
#UngodlyHour
is about.
