Today it's my pleasure to present my magnum opus from my time in the Levin group: a site-selective benzene-to-pyridine "transmutation"
Now, you can perform C-to-N replacements in arenes with intuitive and predictable site selectivity!

It was such a huge pleasure to take this project on!
Even when I was doing this reaction every day it still made me excited to draw it at the top of my notebook pages.
I owe a lot to my amazing coworkers, coauthors, and advisor
@LevinChem
I came to the Levin group with no practical experience in developing organic reactions.
They took a chance on me and gave me the ideal environment to grow into the chemist I am now.

A machine-learning model can be used to predict the future “impact” of research published in scientific literature, according to a
@NatureBiotech
paper. The model could aid in the construction of diversified, impact-optimized funding portfolios.
A pigeon decided the mat by our back stairs (which we use every day) was an appropriate place to raise its pigeon family. Literally zero attempt at a nest. I'm honestly impressed.
This is beautiful magnetism work and one of the most interesting bismuth complexes I've ever seen. Having to move to UV-vis to actually measure D is something I never imagined would happen. Truly incredible stuff. Congratulations to all!
Excited beyond words to share my lab's first research paper which is online today at Nature:
Have you ever wanted to just "delete" an atom? Anomeric amides let you pluck out nitrogen atoms as N2. So proud of the team!

Extremely disappointing to see such exclusionary language put in this year's solicitation. As a
#NSFGRFP
fellow, I'm shocked and upset to see the organization that gave me this opportunity closing its doors to others. There's science worth funding in every field.

Underrated paper: truly quantitative comparison of solvent drying agents and shoutout to the series by Burfield for other solvents (Papers 1,3,5 and 7 have been the most useful, Paper 1: )

Really wish I had this to reference when I was defending my thesis! Such an intuitive way to bridge the gap between magnetochemists and the broader chem community. Fantastic work!
I’m really proud of this one. We managed to discover a brand new Dirac semimetal candidate! Wouldn’t have been able to do it without help from

and many others. Check it out!
Localization of electronic spin on a nuclear spin-active nucleus is such a smart way to maximize temperature sensitivity. Awesome result and awesome paper!
Excited to share our recent paper (that I think is pretty cool), figuring out how to make a nuclear spin mimic the environmental sensitivity of an electron spin:

We use those occasionally. I've even stuck two lamps in each side, but you'll want to mount a little PC fan or something on there. Your reaction will get pretty warm without it but it shouldn't be a fire hazard.
Hey prospective NU chemistry grad students! Come check out what we have in the

I learned in grad school that 4:3 was the standard and that it fit on all projectors, but it seems that the standard might have shifted. In that case, is there any reason to continue making new presentations in 4:3?
So, my powerpoint slides are still 4:3 ratio. Being required to convert to 16:9 for an online presentation platform is the kind of thing that wastes my time and makes me very grumpy. Honestly, I am donating my time and don’t need to be mandated to spend more time for their profit
This is still alarming. NSF should not be telling new graduate students what fields are and aren't worthwhile. How hard is it to just leave specific solicitations out of the
#GRFP
? Isn't the mission of NSF to further *all* basic science?
Recent updates to the
#GRFP
solicitation have caused confusion in the community about how applicants will be selected. Let us clarify: GRFP applicants will be and always have been selected based on their individual merit.
