This day in Turkey: Apr. 3, 1930 Women gained voting rights in municipal elections in Turkey. They got full rights to vote and be elected 4 years later, but in 1933 women became eligible to run for muhtar, with Gülkız Ürbül (aka Gül Esin) becoming Turkey's first female muhtar.

This day in Turkey: Oct. 30, 1973 The Bosphorus Bridge was inaugurated, becoming the longest bridge in the world outside the US at the time. Known today as the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, about 180,000 cars cross it daily. When fully loaded, the mid-span sags 90 cm (as intended).

This day in Turkey: June 21, 1934 The Surname Law was adopted, requiring all Turkish citizens use last names. Muslims had to drop titles like Hoca and Efendi, while many minorities had to use Turkish renditions of their names. For ex, some Greeks replaced "-ides" with "-oğlu."

Voting started in Turkey. In many cities, people reporting long queues in front of the schools started by 0730. My sister is a volunteer in a mixed-vote school in Üsküdar, and in her ballot box, the stamper has already been broken twice and almost half of the votes are in the box

This day in Turkey: June 29, 1950 Turkey declared its military support for South Korea, 4 days after the start of the Korean War. The first 5,000 Turkish troops arrived Oct. 19, with about 15,000 Turkish soldiers serving btw 1950-1953. 721 were killed, about 170 went missing.

This day in Turkey: July 6, 1991 Dr. Lale Aytaman was appointed governor of Muğla, becoming the first female governor of Turkey. She served 1991-1995 under the Anavatan Party and became known for promoting environmental awareness, cultural heritage and tourism in the province.

This day in Turkey: Apr. 17, 1993 Turkey's 8th Pres. Turgut Özal dies of heart failure, becoming the second Turkish leader to pass away while in office, after Atatürk. His body was exhumed in 2012 on suspicions he was poisoned, but an autopsy found no proof to back the claims.
