I currently live in an African country. I talk with my taxi drivers to practice my French and learn more about what people think here. I avoid political topics in general, so I don't know how the topic came up. But he was expressing his sincere admiration of Pu and Ru as being "strong"... The Soviet - era influence in this region (often through African students studying in the USSR) is seen both in how many people are named Serge, Viktor, etc. -- and in the ongoing affinity for Ru.

I can. $$$ spent now stopping Ru (and their suppliers/supporters NK, Iran, China) prevents a larger war in Europe, helps deter China seizing Taiwan, and re-invade establishes the US image of strength that leads to deterrence. Peace through Strength. If the O-B admin refused to provide the $ of lethal defensive weapons in 2014/15, and DoD recommended, Ru expansion in Ukraine could have been stopped. The first DT admin DID do that, and Putin didn't invade then. The past three years has been a slow-drip of aid to Ukraine. The previous admin talked a good game, but Jake Sullivan was not interested in deterrence or peace through strength. So the $$$ used was not as effective as it could have been. DT & the US can re-establish deterrence and peace through strength. The $$$ spent now can prevent a spreading of the war in Europe and NATO -- which would result in the US being drawn in to another hot war (as happened in WWI & WWII.) So, yeah. It sucks to spend the $$$ now -- but it is an investment that saves $$$$$ and US lives in the long run.
