Fitting that it is his final work. A gargantuan masterpiece that dwells in affects I've never seen portrayed on screen before or since.
Rewatching The Return last month I was struck by what an unprecedented line in the sand it offers. A sprawling canvas of weaving liminalities, dissonant aesthetics, and narrative that degrades instead of develops. It’s like a challenge from one century of the medium to the next
