34 years ago today, Heathers was hatched. Janet Maslin said “Legitimately Startling” and Pauline Kael said “the writer has a malicious ability in pinning down psychological cant.” How cool would it have been if I died in a helicopter crash the next day?
I followed Heathers with Ford Fairlane, thinking I had written a brilliant satire of hardboiled machismo with Dice as my Closeau. First scene of first day of shooting, Gilbert Gottfried ad-libs “She was a pig so I fucked her!” Realize I may have miscalculated. Still loved the guy
When I’ve had too much to drink, I Google “Daniel Waters Underrated” and enjoy the fireworks or at least the flickering sparklers. Happy 30th birthday to the rather adorable, Nostradumbass, Stallone Sleeperization Demolition Man
I’ve taken a lot of both love and bile for this picture but the fact my intentionally misguided blockbuster tinkering helped get a jillion dollar picture a slot in an Indie film fest will always make me smile
BATMAN RETURNS was released 32 years ago today, which is as good an excuse as any for me to once again trot out this piece I wrote in 2018 when it played at the MFA.
Going into surgery tomorrow. I’ve always been pretty cool about the prospect of death….but not during Succession and Barry’s final seasons. Don’t take me yet, Lord!
Back from seeing John Wick 4 in IMAX. I’m sure, over history, there have been better films. I just can’t seem to think of any. I recall something about a Mafia family where Sterling Hayden played a cop but my memory is clouded. Today John Wick 4 is cinema’s finest achievement.
Be it Donald Cammell’s director’s cut or even the chopped up cut, Anne Heche gave one of my favorite perfs ever in The Wild Side, I got to tell her at a party. She told me Scorcese and Jonathan Demme were similarly effusive. What a tragedy…but track down that crazy movie
I see them all, regardless of shitty trailers and my own actual desires and gut feelings. Sometimes God rewards. I’m saying that Julia Louis Dreyfuss Big Death Parrot picture is something like a masterpiece
Michael Ritchie. How can a guy start off with greatness and devolve into crap?…wonders the writer of Heathers and Vampire Academy. I discuss my bittersweet idol with main man

This is the peak but there is enough good batshit to make me forget the last film. Momoa’s reaction to a beloved character’s death later in the film tickles me everyday
Pulled a Luise Rainer with back-to-back Razzies for Ford Fairlane/Hudson Hawk. Criterion Channel series inclusion would have turned my Lemons into Tragedy+Time=Comedy Lemonade but no, a snub on top of a snub
@Nick_McGurk
@LexG_III
The first draft of my script for Returns had Robert Wuhl’s annoying character crucified against the Bat signal with his corpse projected against the sky
@thorpe_the
My kind of love story! The ideal reaction to my work came when I was told of a double date coming out of Heathers that instantly led to two breakups. The Heathers lovers of each couple eventually married
@bdgrabinski
It is my humiliating duty to report that this is how I began a draft of Heathers. Thankfully (and now ironically) Winona Ryder killed it by pleading “please don’t make me jog!”
I made my case to

that they include this rare slice of 80s comedy gold featuring a young

giving it his all as AMERICAN GILLIGAN for the new AMERICAN GIGOLO 4K, but it was just too hot for them to handle.
Here's the trailer for my film THE FEELING THAT THE TIME FOR DOING SOMETHING HAS PASSED. Our theatrical release is April 26! "Looks like a *weird* movie" – my mother
I woke up this morning and vomited for no reason. I then realized it’s National Ketchup Day. Ketchup, aka The Devil’s Semen, has been making perfectly delicious hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries pointlessly taste like ketchup for eons. Boo the Ruin Goo!
The scaffolding is up on MY 500 FAVORITE FILMS 1903-2025 list and I need you good folk to tell me a movie you think I may not have experienced yet. Yes, I’ve seen Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Capricorn One, and Bykov’s Soviet masterwork, Scarecrow
Loving the rancor behind this “Stop calling entertaining action movies stupid” discourse, but man, saw The Beekeeper last night and it really is great and really is bad
I try to avoid these time sucks, but perfect album released when you were 16? That’s 1978 for me people and at least 36 perfect albums came out then. Just one….
@4krazykatz
As the writer, I’m ashamed to admit I lazily used Burger King. When Joel Silver told me “Sorry kid, Burger King turned us down and Taco Bell stepped up,” I was overjoyed.
First Hiller in a theater: The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder—First Hyams: Capricorn One—First Yates: For Pete’s Sake—First Kershner: S*P*Y*S—First Aldrich in a theater: Hustle—First Fleischer: Doctor Doolittle (first movie in a theater PERIOD)
I for (perhaps literally) for one remember the scene in UFORIA where Cindy Williams wakes up next to Fred Ward. She sneers “Get out. You got what you wanted.” Fred wardly says “I was also hoping for some breakfast” RIP
@KarinaLongworth
Jane Campion’s The Portrait of a Lady is her best film, Nicole Kidman’s best performance, and it’s better than Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Also, I have a fondness for A Good Time Call…
@mangiotto
@docstrangelove
Hudson Hawk plot recaps always make me feel like I’m sitting at the Hague, Urkeling my war crimes…”Did I do that?” Sending good vibes to Bruce nevertheless
@bdgrabinski
Basic is fine but I love how this still, which basically gives away the film’s surprise ending, was attached to many opening day reviews I read of the film
Eyeballed 900 90’s Best Lists. Faves of the Not Mentioned Once: Those Who Love Me Can Take The Train, Bad Boy Bubby, Un Couer En Hiver, The Insider, Donald Camnell’s The Wild SIde, Bob Roberts, Bulworth, Naked Killer, Iron Giant

Do The Right Thing, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Drugstore Cow—oh forget it! Such a good year for movies, not for Oscar. Call me a scoundrel, but My Left Foot is the only nominee I admire

@joerussotweets
Ha! I’m a writer of Batman Returns and heard Nolan at a Q&A, violently pooh-poohing BR. I thought he was going to whip a laser pointer on me and have me brought down for an on-stage crucifixion
@LazlosGhost
I have a fondness for both reviews. Ebert is poignant in his “I don’t get it”-ness and Kael, my hero, says I “have a malicious ability in pinning down psychological cant”…which is pretty T-shirt worthy
@PeterAPeel
If Andrea Riseborough doesn’t get to play Pauline, I hope she at least gets the role of Renata Adler for the climactic sword fight at the end
@paulinekaelbot
Hey! There are better quotes you could have picked, bot! How about “the writer [me] has a malicious ability in pinning down psychological cant “? Much better!
When one of your best Womenfolk friends writes, directs and stars in a movie, it may not be the best time to rhapsodize your appreciation of Unlikable Female Characters….but

I’m a Film/Football bigamist, the only human to say the words “Aw man, UCLA is screening Hester Street the day of the Super Bowl!” Today’s quandary: Last Action Hero at the Alamo vs Cowboys/Bucs. Can I really just DVR? Seems unseemly
@LazlosGhost
I’ll put my superhero/multiverse vomit level up against anyone’s. This film is full body and brain joy. Don’t be scared. Yes, it Empire Strikes Back your ass but this much bliss can be forgiven
@TheNewWorldPod
Come on, man, not every Batman film needs to be the same! Embrace the spectrum! Quality Batman over quantity Batman! Isn’t the best Catwoman enough for your respect? Comic book loyalty is overrated
@BilgeEbiri
I’m a lifelong pedestrian. Never had a driver’s license. Have survived and thrived for over 35 years in freaking Los Angeles as a walker. I’m STILL traumatized by my one week in Dallas! Calling my lawyer…

@newbeverly
This one has always fascinated me. Takes some disturbing turns but I’ll tell anyone who listens that its opening credit sequence ranks up there with Touch of Evil and Enter the Void
