@culturaltutor One thing that I've always found interesting about films is the difference between run-times. It felt like 90 minutes was the standard growing up in the 90s. Now it's more like 120-150 minutes. Then you look at classic movies and some of them are 5-6 hours long.

@culturaltutor As an American, this thread was awesome. Shakespeare is taught in highschools throughout the country... but we don't learn much about the history of the theatres. To answer your question: I think it would be phenomenal if we dedicated resources to rebuilding Penn Station.

@culturaltutor When I was a child, art like Bauer's would be somewhat scary to me. Then as a preteen I discovered Magic the Gathering and dove headlong into the world of fantasy art. I took to zombies and elves as my creatures of choice... now I have some of that art adorning the walls.

@culturaltutor I agree that concrete isn't the problem with modern architecture... ugly and uninteresting designs are. Incorporating greenery and paint/artwork goes a long way toward making architecture beautiful. Something as simple as power washing can improve the aesthetic for a time.

@culturaltutor I have a hard time imagining structures more evil looking and intimidating than those produced at the intersection of Brutalism and Communism. Where Generic Brutalism sucked the souls of individuals in a soulless society, Pure Brutalism structures look to be built by the Empire.

@culturaltutor It's sad that she had to turn away from the beautiful and timeless Art Deco to try and make ends meet. A true craftsman not just a hobbyist, we could've had an abundance more pieces of the art she loved... instead of the ugly abstracts and modernism. C'est la vie!

@culturaltutor It's amazing that these are built with the help of volunteers. Assuming that those volunteers aren't skilled tradesmen... the system they follow must be incredibly detailed. We should aspire to create more buildings and plans that are this beautiful where all hands can help.

@culturaltutor It's amazing how different lighting or some post production editing can change a beautiful landscape into a fantasy backdrop. I never knew that I could visit some of my favorite movie sets without stepping a foot in Hollywood or Toronto.

@culturaltutor I would absolutely love to have little details like this on my house. But it feels like putting lipstick on the pig without improving the beauty of other parts of my home first. With that being said this is an easy, fairly cheap way to increase beauty and lessen the monotany.

@culturaltutor Impressionism may have began the landslide towards the insanity that is modern art, but impressionism itself is not so bad. The idea that the thoughts and feelings of the person viewing the painting are more important than the thoughts and feelings of the person who painted it.

@culturaltutor Diogenes reminds me a lot of the jesters of the court and maybe even helped to inspire them? Jesters often exposed the hippocracy of the courts through satire and parody. Set in opposition of how kings were normally treated, the jester's "roasts" was met with laughter.

@axcp1110 @culturaltutor I can if it's an ugly art movement. There are plenty of "pioneers" that left a scar on the world. Sometimes you just don't know it's a scar until later. I know there are people that appreciate Picasso, I'm just not one of them.

@culturaltutor The story of Charles Meryon really resonates with me because I have some mild (red/green) color blindness. This man did an excellent job of pivoting to etching, but I can't help but wonder if he considered painting in grayscale. He could've been revolutionary in that regard.

@culturaltutor Orange is an interesting color for me because I'm red-green colorblind (anomalous or whatever they call it). But really I have a hard time differentiating between orange and light green (leaning towards yellow). I often wonder if I'm seeing the same color orange as everyone

@culturaltutor Wood is honestly the best material to build with. It's just naturally beautiful. It's a shame in some ways that wood is so susceptible to the elements. Fire, water, wind, and earth all take their toll. But I actually think that adds to the beauty.

@SaveYourSons I am the second twin (still working on that first mil though). People either learn what to do, or what not to do from their parents. My father always said, "Do as I say, not as I do." So I guess he kind of knew that his wasn't the greatest path.

I couldn't believe what my wife said just a few hours after giving birth to our second child... After 20+ hours in labor with no epidural my wife was close to emergency c-section. She and my unborn son had a fever from infection due to the length of delivery. (More below👇)

@culturaltutor "Form follows function" is one of the most quoted and misunderstood phrases of all time. It has led us away from beauty when it should have led us towards it. We need more Art Deco and less Brutalism, International, or whatever ugly things they come up with next.

@culturaltutor I can't think of gothic architecture without thinking of Dark Souls, particularly Anor Londo. As someone that was born and raised in the US... movies and videogames were my only exposure to this architecture. I hope to visit it in person someday soon.

@Culture_Crit Modern architecture is as creative as it is courageous... that is to say, neither at all. They took no chances in an attempt to be modern and futuristic, but ended up being bland and ubiquitous. No one goes out of their way to visit these buildings, or will in the future.
