Amir Locke's mother reacts to decision not to charge officer who shot her son. Says she will not give up:
"The spirit of my baby is going to haunt you for the rest of [your] life," she says of officers. "I am not disappointed, I am disgusted with the city of Minneapolis."
Rep.
@IlhanMN
says she will return to Iowa to stump for Bernie Sanders in the final days before the caucuses next month: “I look forward to not only doing the big rallies but also having smaller conversations in that big push.”
Walz says agitators not involved with initial protests now causing mayhem "are adapting, are receiving information together" and being fed info from professionals on tactics for urban warfare.

Mayor Carter echoes others saying these outside agitators are taking advantage of legit protesters sadness to destroy the city. Says arrests made last night in St. Paul were from out-of-state.
Rep. Ilhan Omar releases statement on phone call with GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert following her anti-Muslim comments about Omar, which Omar says were based on an alleged exchange that never happened. Background:

Former MN Gov. Mark Dayton announces on Facebook that he has married a former campaign aide. "[We] lost touch, until we ran into each other in Minneapolis a couple of years ago. The rest is happy history," he writes.
Walz says he plans to start releasing ID of some of the leaders causing mayhem and instigating. Best estimate is 20% of demonstrators are Minnesotans and 80% outside.
Walz: "Minnesotans: This is a challenging times. Our great cities... are under assault from people who do not share our values... and certainly are not here to honor George Floyd." Says that will stop today and order must be destroyed.
It's... not a joke because the full statement, in context, is true. MN DOES have same-day registration... “You don’t have to be registered to go vote in Minnesota. We have same day registration so you can register at the polls."
Frey: If you have family of friends who are considering protesting... This is no longer about protesting. Says violence caused by outsiders must stop. He echoes Walz in citing concerns about pandemic still happening.
Gov. Tim Walz's staff releases letter from COS to Senate GOP leader Paul Gazelka ahead of meeting between the two officials. Walz and Gazelka have clashed over COVID response, emergency powers + commissioners of late:
MN Rep.
@Ilhan
Omar among members petitioning for making pandemic policy allowing for remote paid congressional interns permanent. Argue change "would allow offices to keep their internship programs open to many students historically denied access to congressional experience."
New this AM: U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar to report raising +$1.6M in Q4 as she gears up for a Dem primary rematch w/ 2022 challenger Don Samuels.
It's a record haul for the Minneapolis Democrat (+ likely the district)
How much would the $1.9T COVID relief bill that passed the House send to state/local gov here? I asked offices of Reps.

-Minneapolis metro: $281M
-Hennepin Co: $246M

Confirmed: MN Gov. Tim Walz is going to go to the White House tomorrow with other governors to meet with the president, per a spox.
Catch up fast: Walz, chair of DGA, organized call yesterday w/ Dem govs where concerns/calls for a mtg w/ Biden were aired, as

reported.
Pub Safety Commissioner Harrington now providing an update. Says never a time in his 40-year career that so many law enforcement came together for single, unified mission. Repeats others that change has occurred over recent days from peaceful to last night violence.
Harrington says last night saw a change in tone and approach by "riotists," bent on destroying property and hurting people. Says multiple shots fired in both cities. IED were also used to injure State Troopers and others.
GOP State Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer, a committee chair and former Secretary of State, suggests in FB comment that black Americans “want $13 Trillion. $375,000 for each black.” “That is only a start I am sure,” she adds. I have asked caucus spox for comment:
"Today we say enough is enough. Our nation must be governed not from chaos but from opportunity. Not by wallowing over what’s wrong, but by marching inexorably toward what’s right. That’s got to start with all of us." -

I know only journalists care about this *cue tiny violin* but it's really bad how infrequently the

credits other local outlets when they folo their scoops/reporting.
(and I say this as someone who has a lot of love and respect for a Strib as a former staffer!)
Walz says throughout the day today the *peaceful* protests WILL continue. "Today will be an expression of that loss of George Floyd. There will be legitimate exercising of 1st amendment rights." He will work to protect that right to do that.
Out of context
@GovTimWalz
quote:
"This is our way back to normalcy, we get done on this side of the road, we get to go into the miracle of birth barn."
Harrington says dept is following social posts organizing unrest. Also working with federal partners on is this organized crime, terror? Building info and intel network now, he says.
"The wife of Minneapolis City Council Member Jamal Osman incorporated a nonprofit that reported feeding 2,500 children per day under a federal program that’s been rocked by alleged fraud in Minnesota."
Harrington confirms what anyone watching on Twitter (or IRL) saw last night: both public and private property set on fire, destroying businesses and homes.
Neighbors on my S. Minneapolis block have volunteered to be safety captains for the night. Collecting cell phones and names of everyone and providing tips if riots or arsonists hit our neighborhood.
Update: Looks like some new results in St. Cloud GOP Sen. Jerry Relph now trailing DFL challenger Aric Putnam in
#SD14
. GOP could still hold majority if Relph loses -- DFL would have to flip 1 more.
GOOD evening. This trend continues to hold. SD14 has tightened since the AM, but otherwise we're still looking at a narrow GOP majority in MN Senate come Jan. DFL holding out hope that outstanding ballot can narrow gap in some of these close seats

MDH Commissioner Jan Malcolm just got her COVID-19 vaccine (J&J shot). She said she’s looking forever to having dinner indoors with vaccinated friends, in accordance with CDC guidance.
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter acknowledged that arrest data he initially shared was later found to be inaccurate. “I take full responsibility for that.”
Talked to

about his plans for

I've gotten a few reader emails asking if/when their MN absentee ballot tracker status will change from "accepted and will be counted" to "counted." If you see "accepted and will be counted," you can rest easy. That's the final status change in the system.
New: State Sen. Kelly Morrison announces run for
#MN03
seat held by Rep. Dean Phillips, who is running for president.
Between the lines: Morrison is a close friend and ally of Phillips.
I have asked

USA Today fact checks those Project Veritas videos alleging ballot fraud in Minneapolis: "Based on our research, the claim that Project Veritas discovered a voter fraud scheme connected to Rep. Ilhan Omar is FALSE."
New: DFL caucus elects Sen. Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) the next majority leader of Minnesota Senate.
#mnleg
She succeeds Sen. Dziedzic, who stepped down due to reoccurrence for cancer.
One thing I love about the MN political press corps is how stacked it is with talented female journalists. 4/5 of the questions at the initial avail after Benson's campaign announcement came from women!
Speaker Hortman says House DFL believes they now have 69 "pro-choice" votes in the majority. That's a shift from recent sessions, when DFL had majority but not majority of members who supported abortion rights, could allow Dems to go on offense on abortion-related bills.
Walz says after days of legit protests, last night was "mockery of pretending this is about George Floyd's death or inequities or historical traumas to our communities of color."
Asked MDE about whether any districts are offering litter boxes to children. Response: "MDE is not aware of any school in the state of Minnesota that is doing this."
At an event last week, the GOP candidate for governor of Minnesota there are, "litter boxes in some of the school districts so kids can pee in them, because they identify as a furry..."
It's a persistent and bizarre Internet hoax.
Lt. Gen. Jensen of MN National Guard says 24 hours ago had 400 guardsman, reached a peak of 700 soldiers mobilized. While it was largest mobilization in state history, "it was not enough."
tfw you try to get out of town for a quick weekend getaway without your toddler after 3 straight weeks of illness/weather life disruptions and.... your flight is diverted to a different airport due to severe weather 🙃🤞✈️
Walz says he knows calling up the guard will only make things more difficult tonight. Says he expects those bent on destruction to call for more to join their forces. "I'm not trying to make this any lighter. This is going to be very difficult."
The turnaround on the free saliva tests here in MN has gotten really fast. I took one at MSP at 12:15 Sunday (had been coughing a bit) and woke up to my (negative!) result in my inbox.
Former GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty here to get a COVID-19 shot alongside DFL Gov. Tim Walz. Says vaccination isn’t political issue, just the smart thing to do.
