whilst the main focus is older cartoons, the contents on this page extend to modern ones and occasionally videogames and comics, etc. dm submissions are open if you have a fictional cat or clips/fun facts about them you'd like to see posted! (basic guidelines in thread)
this song was introduced in the WB movie "It All Came True", sung by Ann Sheridan and referenced frequently in future Looney Tunes cartoons. in fact, this isn't the first time it's used in a Sylvester cartoon! you can hear it in his third ever cartoon, "Kitty Kornered"!
Mehitabel (Carol Channing) is a singing alley cat with self-destructive tendencies that typically land her in unfortunate circumstances involving various toms. Meanwhile, her only friend, Archy the cockroach, tries repeatedly to convert her to a more “respectable” lifestyle."
"Directed by John David Wilson, the film was based on the musical of the same name ft. Eartha Kitt, as well as the original “Archy and Mehitabel” stories written by Don Marquis. (...)
"his name was decided through a contest in the 80's, in which the most suggested name would be given to him! All of the people who suggested the winning name got to visit the studio in which the comics were produced, one of them even got a cat as a gift!"
this one-off character was voiced by Daws Butler, best known for his work for the Hanna-Barbera animation production company, being the voice of plenty of other classic feline characters such as Snagglepuss, Mr. Jinks, Super Snooper and Lippy the Lion. submitted by anon!
the cartoon itself has an interesting history. it was directed by Sylvester's creator Friz Freleng and it's a remake of one his previous cartoons, "Notes to You" (1941), featuring Porky Pig and an unnamed alley cat. in the remake, Elmer Fudd takes Porky Pig's place.
furthermore, Sylvester's musical number in this specific clip is inspired by the musician and bandleader Spike Jones, known for punctuating his performances with gunshots and other outlandish elements.
when submitting clips or one-offs/cameos, please tell me specifically where it's from, including the name of the episode if it's from a show. if possible, provide any necessary content warnings regarding the source media!
this cat's resemblance to Felix the Cat was allegedly intentional, as Margaret Winkler, the distributor for the original Felix cartoons, had lost the rights to them and supposedly urged Walt Disney to create a similar replacement. (Felix on the right.)
however, "Back Alley Oproar" was the only cartoon in which the song was sung by a toon past the first line! in other instances where this song was sung, any remaining lines were simply hummed.
